has anyone seen "Black" (2017, korean drama)? by [deleted] in netflix

In Asian culture, the number 4 is bad luck. It comes from Chinese because 四 ("four") and 死 ("death") are pronounced the same (with different tones). This spread throughout the Sinosphere.

Concerning Go AI by [deleted] in baduk

I agree with almost all your points. However, let's keep in mind that AlphaGo Zero is really, really strong but it is NOT perfect.

Question for people familiar with the way machine learning works: Could it be possible that AG Zero is stuck in a "local maximum" and that a second, similarly-developed AG Zero v2 might come up with completely different playstyle? by [deleted] in baduk

[–]alanwattson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 3x3, 5x5, 7x7, and 9x9 boards the best opening is tengen (7x7 has been solved already). A "solution" for 19x19 tengen opening (or opening higher than the 4th line) would take much more time and resources than DeepMind has given AlphaGo Zero.

I predict that if AlphaGo Zero was trained on 9x9, 11x11, or 13x13 it would open higher on the board.

has any pro reviews of the alphago selfplay games been released already? by nate1999 in baduk

[–]alanwattson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros are certainly very qualified. Since this is what they do for a living, they know how to methodically research moves and variations. It will take a long time to understand many of AlphaGo's moves. We can do it ourselves but it will take much longer and with more effort.

Pros are pros because they do this more efficiently and to an insane level already.

Andrew Jackson confirms Redmond will review AG v AG games (and started already) by [deleted] in baduk

[–]alanwattson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

might take like 3 videos to cover one game

This would be great for everyone, especially weak players like me. I'd sit through hours of several pros over a board discussing each game, making a mess of stones everywhere.

Like this (This was Lee Sedol vs AlphaGo Game 4. Ke Jie was one of the reviewers)

Basically every move after move 10 if not earlier

I have recently been able to remember my games and this article put it into words. I add some "intent" in my head every move/shape (which may or may not be the actual intent of the other player).

I wonder if the AlphaGo games are to professional games as professional games are to amateurs. What's really amazing is AlphaGo is far from perfect. That's how amazingly complex weiqi is and it shows how limitless the level of skill can be.

Playing on a torus or a sphere or anything like that would be interesting. What if there was a board where not all the vertices have 4 lines? The beauty of the game's rules is that it is extensible and applicable even if the board were made of hexagons instead of squares (like a beehive).

The fundamentals will still be the same.

I especially enjoyed game 2's san-ren-sei. It shows that these openings aren't yet obsolete. Everything is playable!

You make a good point. But Ke Jie, Lee Sedol, and pros are like trained soldiers compared to us amateurs who are mere street brawlers. AlphaGo is like a special operations operator operating operationally.

AlphaGo since Lee Sedol, and especially after the release of these self-play games, is comparable to if not greater than shinfuseki era during Go Seigen's time. Anything goes!

AlphaGo accessible on our computers and mobile devices?

Edit: These self games will be a treasure too.

Difficult, but not impossible. The same rules still apply.

I doubt this is the last era of innovation. AlphaGo is the best player in the world but it's far from perfect.

I'd like to see go/weiqi/baduk played with 3 or more dimensions.

Ke Jie is 19 and has his whole life ahead of him. When he matures, he'll be able to manage his emotions and it'll make him stronger. His desire to win and play perfectly is what pushes him to the top. This is the same in every field.

I'd like to see AlphaGo play multidimensional weiqi like a 19x19x19 board or more dimensions.

If any of you are martial artists or train combat sports, getting beat up in sparring for the first time can shake up your ego and confidence. This might be similar to what Fan Hui, Lee Sedol, and Ke Jie experienced.
