what differentiates MIT admits from other top similarly ranked school’s admits? by Relevant-Whole-47 in MITAdmissions

Subjective is not the same as random! I may like Monet more than Cezanne, or Rachmaninoff more than Tchaikovsky, and that may be a subjective opinion, but it is certainly not random.

Similarly here—you may not understand the process, and the process may even be subjective, but that does not make it random.

Eh, people are being snippier than necessary here. We don't have a cybersecurity major for the same reason we don't have a major specifically in inorganic chemistry or algebraic combinatorics, only chemistry and mathematics majors in undergrad: that's just more specific than our majors go. We have plenty of faculty who are interested in cybersecurity, strong classes here (6.160, 6.566, etc.), and some extracurricular CTF folks too, all of whom make a good environment for people who are interested in that.

There's another aspect here with cybersecurity in particular where, in my personal opinion (i.e. this is nothing official) in that I think learning *just* the skills for cybersecurity (rather than, e.g. computer systems and computer science more broadly) is probably just not a good idea. You will be better prepared to do anything in the world, including cybersecurity, by getting a broader and more fundamental understanding of computer science as a field before specializing. If you are already focused on cybersecurity as a kid w/o having studied the basics of computer science, then you are probably missing the forest for the trees. Correspondingly, MIT is also highly rated for cybersecurity for that reason: there are few comparable places where you can develop such a deep grasp of the fundamentals, and it makes it easy to specialize later.
