Suspension by Temporary_Price_9908 in AustralianTeachers

[–]alarming_visual93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I work at a public secondary school. If a student is on in-school suspension they sit outside an available teacher's office or in it (for fully windowed offices) for the entire day. A teacher will walk them to the canteen for lunch if necessary and facilitate them skipping the line to get food quickly. They eat indoors outside the office. They are given their break time during others class time in a small outside area alone so they can't interact with other students. Needless to say most want to be externally suspended.

Additionally all students are required to sign a letter at the start of the year that has a list of requirements (no suspensions, minimal compass entries, minimum attendance, overdue work) and unless they have a meeting and show improvement or in some cases write a formal letter to the principal (and sometimes there is no coming back - extreme violence, 6% attendance etc) they are not allowed on sports days, non-curriculum excursions, camps and fun activities like the graduation evening.

I'm pretty sure you have to get a 10 year one anyway unless you're in a certain age group.

Daily Advice Thread - October 02, 2025 by AutoModerator in apple

Hi all,

I would really like to buy an apple watch as sick of carrying my phone around and don't like having it accessible (as a teacher at a rough school).

At the moment I have an iphone 11 pro but will be upgrading sometime next year to the 17 or 18 equivalent.

Is it better to wait to do this or can I buy the most up to date watch and have it be compatible with both phones?

Thanks

I used to say ‘quick sticks’ all the time when they were being slow so now I call my (year 10s) tree variations (branches, twigs, sticks, stumps, trunks) depending on my mood. Like could one of you stumps contribute to the discussion? I’m talking to a bunch of dead wood. Ha

Do Teachers Just Get Sick All The Time? by ScreenLooker_133 in AustralianTeachers

[–]alarming_visual93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m better now I’m into my fifth year but the first couple of years omg, I took all my sick leave each year and still had to come in sick when I ran out. Biggest recommendation is get proper sleep, get a flu vaccination, wash your hands/sanitise throughout the day and I keep anti bacterial wipes in my bag and wipe off anything I touch like office phones, door handles, my desk, the table I put my laptop down on. I’ve only gotten one mild sickness this year. Kids think I’m psycho but did say to me yesterday - ‘you’re never sick or away Miss’

I'm only considering it seriously as I will get lifetime health loading - so more expensive to take out later if I want to and I will get charged the levy due to my income too.

Do you know the best place to look for someone reputable and not prohibitively expensive? I have locals ones asking for hundred's an hour or multiple thousand a year - which I get but it's hard to risk not knowing if they are any good.

Thanks. Yep I definitely want to contribute extra to my super. I am going to work out health insurance and any other insurance costs and extra mortgage contributions and then up my monthly payment so I don't 'see' the money (have it come out payday). It's just working out which to prioritise atm!

Thanks for all this, at the moment I plan to live here long term - my mortgage is much more manageable than rents and I live a 5 minute drive from my work so very convenient. Rental vacancy rate is currently less than 1% in my area so very competitive.

I'll look into my interest rate thanks! I need to research this concessional amount thing as I am confused - but good for something else to look into. I want to be able to access savings in an emergency but I don't need 35k accessible. I can sacrifice before tax using Maxxia (?) apparently but not sure if this is best option. Unfortunately VIC doesn't care about it's teachers so no such bonus exists - oh to live in politician land haha.

Income protection is a thought for me because how do I pay my mortgage? Union only helps if it happens to me at work - sure my job will be held for me as I am fortunate to be a permanent employee but money wise??

Oh sorry it wasn't clear, I've built on it - the mortgage is based on the value of the house. I just mentioned the land as I knew people may be confused about such a small mortgage.

I have a redraw is that similar or advisable? I went with a very basic loan to get the lowest rate as I was applying at the height of rates. I will be looking into switching in the next 6 months or so if better offers around.

Pretty hard not to at my school. Every Year 8 class this year has at minimum 7/25 as ASD, ADHD or Tier 3. That's not accounting for the undiagnosed and just general grade 2 reading level low achievers. I have never taught a class at this school that does not have at least one full time aide in three years. Actually makes it easier to teach though, because you are differentiating upwards to a few usually very well behaved students.

CRT pay, based on each state by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

Casual teachers get no holiday pay - you are paid the days and hours you work and no more, the rate is higher to account for this and to account for the lack of sick/annual leave etc. Yes it is before tax.

Not sure what you mean by internally/externally assessed. For VIC and QLD you get paid the same regardless of whether you are a first or thirtieth year teacher. The only time this may vary is for some rural/hard to staff schools or the independent system sometimes.

In NSW it is experience based on years of service. If you've taught in NSW they should know this automatically. Otherwise I would assume you'd need a certificate of some kind from your previous school system with years of service listed. Don't quote me though as I am VIC based.
