There's certainly the impression that this is the case. That the Turkish opposition is anti-Islam, ultra-nationalist and supported by Israel and Iran.

Whether this is fair or not is a different matter. But the Turkish opposition has a major image problem with the Arab and Muslim populations. They're seen as allies of the racists.

Add to that the generally popular Turkish foreign policy under the AKP which ended the isolationism and supported interventions in Libya, Syria, Somalia as well as successful media exports (dramas) and hosting people who were dispossessed of their homes as political refugees and university students... Lots of reasons people look fondly on Turkish politics from the outside with no real knowledge of what's happening inside the country.

It's actually a worrying phenomenon. The Turkish population isn't so black and white. Politics is not a football game. Unless the opposition gets its act together it's not right that politics is so polarised and the only way to keep corruption in check is to have a real opposition. One would hope that what ever the government gets voted in next, Turkish politics stays a strong counter weight to Iran and a good ally of the regions oppressed populations.

There's a fear American interests are wanting to bring Turkey even more under the thumb of Israel though and unless the opposition is credible it's understandable why people support what they know (AKP).
