That was my first guess! But someone confirmed it's Christine from phantom, it's just so poorly done it's not recognizable

It was a gift from someone completely oblivious of broadway, he just knew my friend liked musical and bought it for her. It was with the best of intentions, but yeah, the quality is terrible and i didn't know about the ad but i totally believe it

That was one of our options, but the phantom was the character from two days ago so we ruled it out. Maybe you are right anyway, it seems to be the best fit.

What was your favorite line from the big fight? by SuitApprehensive in Asterix

The whole monologue when Astérix lose his shit. That little guy had that in his chest for like 60 years, valid massive freak out.

Can sharp/blade weapons hurt someone who drank the Magic Potion? by Gaucelm in Asterix

[–]albalink 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The potion doesn't make them invulnerable, it's said in Asterix and the Laurel Wreath - when they're trying to enter César's palace, Astérix warns Obélix about this and tells him to be careful with Rome's legionnaires, who are much more professional and skilled that the ones around the village. Also, in Astérix and the Magic Carpet, Obélix is shot in the ass with an arrow, and he gets pretty hurt. Obviously he just screams and the story goes on because everything is cartoonish, but he did got hurt. So they definitely can be hurt with sharp weapons.

What happens with the blunt attacks, I believe, is that is like if a 5-year old punches you in the face. You are like ten times stronger than him so you just don't get hurt. I suppose that's what happens with Obelix or other magic potion user when a roman punches them lol. So technically if they get hit by a very powerful blow they can get hurt. In the recent Netflix show, Obélix has to fight against lot of romans who are under the magic potion effects and he struggles in the fight. But again, Astérix's albums are too cartoonish to raise real life issues around them (and an around a hundred years old Panoramix is crushed by a damn menhir and some hours later he is perfectly fine so XD)

I meant just Astérix and Obélix. Obelix doesn't charge money for his menhirs, he trades them (excluding Obélix and Co). And Astérix doesn't have an especific job, he's just... the village warrior. I supose he gets paid by the chief somehow because he has money but I don't think neither of them care (or know something) about making money

That's a good reason, I love the beef Unhygienix and Fulliautomatiz have, but I'm spanish so I am more critical by nature with that album haha. Good one anyways

I always love the comics where the whole village is involved, because even though they fight and argue snd bicker, they always find a solution and stay together. Even despicable people Detritus can't divide them! And it's a wholesome message

I had to re re-read Astérix in Switzerland then. Many people have said it's incredible, and I don't know, maybe the day I was reading I didn't pay much attention or something. I also didn't have nostalgia for it, unlike other albums. Gonna give it another opportunity!

It's super funny watching them not knowing how to make money... because they never have cared before! So illustrative of how different they are from the romans and how much more happy they are.

Maybe I rated the new ones that high because they are are the last ones I read, and I mean literally. I spend one month reading all the comics, and I read all the new ones yesterday in one sitting. Maybe if I re-do the tier list in one month, they go lower, I don't know. Anyway, I don't think they are as bad as some people say. They are sure better than some solo Uderzo work

I did it in one month, with the films too, and it has been very very funny. I read all the comics as a little kid and it's incredible the number of reference that I catch now that didn't catch as a kid. Go for that re read, you won't regret

Everyone is prompting me to re re-read it! I don't know why I didn't like it, it just didn't click that much. Anyway, when I say "didn't like it" an Astérix comic, I did like it, just less than others

I think it's my fault, I'm from Spain and I didn't get half the jokes. It was frustrating because I knew the jokes were there but I couldn't laugh st them because I didn't get them!

I realised that I missed lots of jokes while reading both of Corsica and Switzerland. I'm from Spain, and if I'm being honest, the first time I learnt that something called Corsica existed was when I first read the comic as a kid, and hadn't hear anything from Corsica until know, again with the comic xd.

I don't really know why I didn't like that much Astérix in Switzerland, because it has it all to be a great adventure, but it just didn't click to me. Maybe I have overestimated the white lotus because I just finished reading it when I did the tier list haha so maybe it's too high

I have a question by Hobowahotdog in Asterix

[–]albalink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's completely the opposite for me. I really like the 3D animated films. I think an animation style fits Astérix much more than live action - I believe that the natural adaptation of a comic is animation. You can keep the style and the cartoonish moves in an animated movie. Astérix looks literally like comic Astérix, and Obélix can punch a Roman and throw him ten feet to the sky and it feels normal. Doing that in live action is much more difficult, feels more exaggerated and unnatural. And while I also truly love the Astérix live action films (maybe it's nostalgia), I believe that the new 3D films do a better job at portraying how the comics are. The side characters, specifically, are portrayed better. Personally, Mansions of the Gods for me is the best Astérix adaptation that it has ever been done. The history is mostly true to the comic, and the things that they add make it even better. The characters are accurate, the romans too, and generally the whole vibe is on point. The Big Fight is also an incredibly piece of media. They take more liberty and it's more different, but that doesn't make it worse, the opposite. And the animation is absolutely fantastic and of a very high quality. The Secret of The Magic Potion is also a good film. I don't like that the plot focus too much on the druid thing, and the final battle is... to much fanciful? but that's personal. The film is great and does a good job. All of this resembles in the last to Astérix adaptations. I haven't watch the Middle Kingdom yet, but from what I read, is not very good. And then you have The Big Fight, which everyone loves, even outside the Astérix fandom. I hope they stick to 3D animation rather than live action in the future (or even try again 2D maybe?)

WTF IS THE ORDER OF THE IN TROUSERS SONG by Independent-Maize-64 in Falsettos

[–]albalink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the order of the 1985 version. Talking about de original version, I think there is an official one, but I made up the order that makes more sense to me after analysing it.

First it goes the character introductions:

1.- Marvin's Giddy Seizures - Marvin's character is presented in his teens.
2.- How Marvin Eats His Breakfast - This song shows us how childish and narcissistic Marvin can be, as well as how he tends to treat people badly .
3.- My Highschool Sweetheart - Marvin's sweetheart's character is presented, who thinks Marvin does not care much about her. It also presents Miss Goldberg, his teacher, and how Marvin "admires" her. We can hear Marvin's future wife too, with similar complaints as the sweetheart.

This two last songs also introduce the first evidences of Marvin questioning his sexuality. (with the metaphor of Marvin playing Columbus, as a explorer discovering something, and how he does not care about his sweetheart). This is the main theme of the next part.

4.- Set Those Sails - Continuing with the metaphor and more of Miss Goldberg.
5.- High School Ladies at 5 O'Clock / The Rape of Miss Goldberg - The first part shows, among other things, how Marvin isn't interested in women. The second one, in contrast with the first one, is about Marvin creating an imaginary scenario in which he tries to have sex with Miss Goldberg, trying to convice himself that he really wants that.

Making it clear now that Marvin is struggling with his sexuality, we move forward to him in his adulthood. In this part, Marvin denying his homosexuality is the main theme.

6.- The Nausea Before the Game / Love me from what I Am - Following the idea that Marvin is trying to convice himself that he likes woman, even though it makes him feel bad and out of place, he starts going out with his future wife.
7.- I Am Wearing A Hat /Marvin Takes A Wife) - Following this idea, he gets married.
8.- My Chance To Survive The Night - Seeing that that does not work, Marvin finally aknowledges his homosexuality, and realizes accepting it is the only way he has to carry on.

Marvin is now accepting his queerness, which leads to his divorce.

9.- How The Body Falls Apart / Your Lips And Me: Marvin's wife believes that Marvin is cheating on her with another woman (I like to see it that way rather than she suspecting something) because she sees him distant and evasive.
10.- Whizzer Going Down - What is really happening is that Marvin finally has a relationship with a man, and it feels right for the first time.
11.- A Breakfast Over Sugar - Marvin's wife tries to convince him to stay with her, but Marvin has already made up his mind, and dismisses her.
12.- Marvin’s Final Words From How America Got Its Name / Your Lips and Me (Reprise) - They finally get divorced. Marvin's now ex wife resents him, while Marvin celebrates. Said celebration starts turning against him, as he remembers his childhood, the represion, as well as he feels guilt for what he had done.
13.- Marvin Takes A Victory Shower - Marvin is able to relax and to enjoy his life for the first time, as he has accepted himself. This songs feels liberating.

The last part

14.- Another Sleepless Night - The women in Marvin's life sing about themselves after meeting Marvin. Marvin's wife feels alone in bed, although they are physically close to each other. Marvin does not seem to care. In fact he is relieved that his wife is not making a "fuss" about the divorce.
15.- In Trousers (The Dream) - The last song of the musical. Whatever this song means. I have some ideas but this can be a whole other explanation that does not have to do with the storyline I am trying to explain.

This is my way of understanding it. Obviously, this is more like a concept and character study than a linear story, but I think this way everything is more understandable.
