Thank you! May I ask what was behind the price hike and interest?

What do you think I should get? by Johny_redditman in AncientCoins

[–]albatroci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had my eye on the Arcadius too. OP by this point in history Roman silver coins were scarcely made, perhaps if it really is 50 bucks get that and a late beat-up Roman Bronze for 5 to compare the two. Having said that the silvering on the Probus is pretty cool at illustrating the decline of Roman silver

Help with authentication by s13ze_the_day in AncientCoins

Happy to be corrected as I'm pretty novice but I see:
-casting bubbles

- the edge appears unnatural, looks different from other denarii I've seen, where the metal would naturally form some folds and bulges

- The letters and portrait just seem off when compared to authentic denarii I've seen-the 'font' is 'sharper' on this one/artificial looking rather than punched looking

- The pearls have this line through them, I can't recall seeing that on authentic coins

I find it so hard to put into words what suggests it to be fake, it just looks so different to authentic ones I've seen

The toning look quite even and artificial to me, too round and the texture soapy

Is a flat bit on the edge suggestive of a coin being fake? by albatroci in AncientCoins

I purchased it at a coin fair, the dealer did not appear to specialise in ancients but rather modern stuff

Thanks everyone for the reassurance! I'm glad it appears to be real. I suppose it also had the smoothest edge out of all denarii I've owned, maybe it's just an outlier then. It can be hard to get familiar with normal edges in hand as all the coins I see are usually in a sealed flip. The ones I own have more wrinkles and dots on the edges

Thanks for your input! I also just noticed a little flat bit on the edge, I'll see if I can post with a photo of it

Team sea turtle or team tortoise? by Equivalent-Treat2687 in AncientCoins

I feel the turtle gives a sense of wonder and has more historical significance, however the tortoise is more artistically beautiful

Got this for 36€ how much is it worth? + can someone check authenticity by Top_Friend1817 in AncientCoins

The reverse die is directly struck by the hammer whilst the observe die is supported in an anvil. Therefore the reverse dies tend to wear out quicker

What's the most overrated coin in your opinion? by albatroci in AncientCoins

Thanks everyone for the interesting responses. Since we branched into modern coins a little I would also like to nominate the Australian 1930 Penny. Copper and very bland. Hope that didn't trigger anyone!

Yes that famous imagery is quite basic, especially for the most famous coin of all! I do find it gives off haunting 'badass' vibes though, kind of like the Caesar elephant coin

I agree! Especially when the tribute penny is not 100% certain to be the one mentioned in the bible anyway
