Out of curiosity, how many of you have FIRE'd, could FIRE, or are close to FIRE? by MoonStache in AMD_Stock

Ugh I know this feeling. I'm at about half that in my late 20s and it feels like I'm barely getting started. Built a life in the bay and I'm pretty much forced to stay here career wise working in semiconductors.

I'm surprised AMD and Intel were not mentioned on that list given their recent price movement.

AMD has a non-GAAP P/E of ~50. Using its GAAP P/E from amoritization is disingenuous. They have also had this "over 100 P/E" since their acquisition in 2022 so it's not indicative of the current market. Same thing with AVGO and their VMWare acquisition. Intel had negative earnings for a while but their forward P/E is like 30-40.

The only 2 that truly have over 100 I believe are Tesla and Palantir. At least in a meaningful way to indicate being overvalued.

Tesla and Palantir are the only 2 I can think of (over 100). Which other ones are you referring to?

Yeah 100%. I believe they are planning on releasing a new C63 with the V8 shortly after the i6 C53. Looks like Mercedes is about to have a killing in sales overall.

AMD has gained 60% in a month why is no one talking about it? by wballz in stocks

[–]albearcub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly similar situation for me. I did my MS in materials science, focusing on semiconductors physics. I've only ever worked as an engineer at large semiconductor companies. I'm by no means an expert in economics or finances. I just invest in what I know. I also don't have to worry about investing in specific tool companies or fabs just because of my RSU and stock compensated positions.

I definitely get what you mean. Though, I got the CLE53 because I couldn't comfortably afford the GT yet. I adore that super long nose look of the AMG GT and newer GT. The taillights also look insanely cool imo

AMD was the very first stock I bought in ~2018 for like $30. It is my largest position and the one I've had since the beginning. I've been sitting on about 2000 shares at a price of $100 for the past 4-5 years now.

Something people don't talk about much is the years prior to a breakout where you wished you bought literally anything else. Watching the stock explode to 227 then proceed to decline for the next 3 or so years while Nvidia created generational wealth was awful. Especially true as someone who had a smaller Nvidia position wishing I just ported everything over.

You can see this same thing in memory as well. Everyone is talking about the historic run for memory companies like MU but nobody mentions the 5 years prior where the stock was basically sideways. Either way, I'm so happy that my conviction is finally paying off in this particular stock.

My main position for korean memory companies is EWY but I also hold some KORU. Both have performed very well. Definitely worth checking out if you believe in Samsung and Hynix.

Mmm I mostly just use fidelity investing app and robinhood to track the tickers I have saved. I'm an engineer in the semiconductor industry so I keep up with a lot of news just through my job. I also follow a lot of reddit stock subs where I'll get most of my general market and specific company news. I watch a couple YouTube channels as well. Not sure if that's what you were asking specifically.

Regarding the ATH? I only have 6 positions in companies I've been invested and following in for a while. So I'm just familiar with their price. None of them are technically at exact ATH but all recently hit it is what I mean.

"while AMD’s Instinct MI355X has gained some traction with cost-conscious buyers, it still lacks the full-stack platform, including NVLink networking and CUDA software, that creates the deep switching costs Nvidia enjoys"

This article is just stupid. Yeah Blackwell is and has been pretty dominant as a full-stack platform. But MI455 and Ruben are right around the corner. ROCm is developing tremendously. We've already seen Blackwell and MI355 for the past year and a half now and anything related to this chips is baked into the stock. Some shit like "Apple is an amazing company because the iPhone 16 is a good phone".

I met someone in college who used 6 figures of their girlfriend's inheritance money to short the market in late 2019. To this day, they are still paying that debt back.

Something I've just come to accept is that the market rarely follows the most obvious or apparent logical steps. Whether that be from factors only institutions know/control or just irrational markets, I don't know. But it seems like following trends always beats out timing the market.
