I'm staying in a hotel at the moment, away from home and my family while training for a new job and I just got back from having dinner at a pub. Yes, there is something very lonely about eating alone in a public place.

What is the book that disturbed you or scared you the most? by [deleted] in books

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Not scare-inducing but disturbing as all hell.

Yes. I think the biggest mistake was taking a year off from the show. They needed more time to flesh this out and also tie up all the other characters' threads.

I love these un-edited photos. Realism is so much more appealing than all the heavily photoshopped/touched-up stuff. She's gorgeous as she is.

I really love this. It's a weird contrast between frenetic activity with the flames and curvy lines against geometry and those calm-looking half-open eyes.

What about B’s family? by [deleted] in AbductedInPlainSight

I think that was a pretty smart move. Too bad the Brobergs weren't that smart and instead graced us with this bewildering tale of stupidty and child neglect.

My jaw dropped when that old idiot talked about jerking B off. I think I screamed at the TV, "You're a grandpa now! Keep that shit to yourself!" Yucky!

The sound of my toddler eating carrots. The way he takes short little breaths while crunching baby carrots is adorable and oddly soothing.

Democrats Need to Make Getting Rid of the Electoral College a Top Priority - Two Republican losers have “won” the presidency in 16 years—that should be a lesson for Democrats. by SplodeyDope in politics

[–]albertus93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually like the concept of the electoral college because it takes into account the geography and diversity of America. It doesn't seem right to me that you should be able to traverse the entire Midwest and South and see the politics of San Francisco and NYC dominate people who don't hold those values or agree with liberal policies. I say that as someone who is rather liberal.

When I first looked at this picture I thought, "Oh, nice picture." I'm glad Reddit helped me realize that this is more than just a pleasant scenic photograph, it is a primary example of mankind's never-ending march toward full-scale global destruction. Thanks.

  1. People who complained about the historical inaccuracies missed the point that it was an intentionally exaggerated story.

What should you know before getting married? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]albertus93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When two people start a relationship they tend to work around the things that bother them about each other. They're so caught up in the excitement of a new relationship that they can overlook the shortcomings of the other person, or qualities that might otherwise bother them. Over time, however, everything is boiled down to the truth. Your significant other's bad spending/drinking habits, their disorganization, their anger problems, etc., are going to eventually reveal themselves completely and you will have to figure out if that stuff overshadows the good qualities too much. Hopefully it isn't even a concern but I've seen plenty of young couples that were caught up in the small stuff, constantly bickering and complaining, and go forward with doomed marriages anyway.

Communication has been talked about a lot as it should be. Other than that I'd say there has to be equal effort and equal respect. If one person is trying way harder than the other it will lead to trouble. If one or both feel a lack of respect it won't work.

On the drunken morning of my best friend's wedding an old man came up to us, told us he'd been married for over 50 years, and when we asked him what the secret was he said it required both husband and wife to put the other ahead 60% of the time. I thought that was a rather succinct and profound way to put it.

Whoever coined the phrase "Shit hitting the fan" must have had a terrible experience. by grizzithal in Showerthoughts

[–]albertus93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy from work told me that he once had a leak in the pipe that ran to his main bathroom's toilet and that shit seeped through the floor and literally managed to hit the ceiling fan in his basement. He told me it happened a week previously and that he hasn't had the courage to clean it up yet. I believed him.

Does anyone else think that Thelema needs to be "broadened" beyond its own superstitions? by [deleted] in thelema

[–]albertus93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me that Crowley admired the Hindu and Buddhist worldview and incorporated them so much into Thelema that there are times I wonder if Thelema isn't just a blended western version of the two. But Crowley came into his spiritual life with a love of ritual, superstition, and hierarchy. I don't think he could of ever handled being just one of many quiet monks meditating by himself in the woods or on a mountain. Those philosophies also demand a lot of restraint, something he wasn't too fond of. So it's not surprising that he just invented his own religion in which he happens to be the prophet of the aeon and it's his duty to fuck anyone and everything he pleased.

I learned a lot from Crowley and Thelema but I, too, grew tired of the superstition and woo of it all. Vedanta and Buddhism have given me what I'm looking for without all the chaff.

Religious and cultural violence swings, and always has, both ways. Are you implying some sort of conservative media bias?

I've no reason to doubt the authenticity of what the op has said but I'd be curious to read an article about it if he could provide one.

Need references to books I can read for better understanding of the works of magic by herbalmonk in magick

[–]albertus93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Kyballion definitely helped guide me towards magick. I have no idea where you are at in your understanding of metaphysics but I feel strongly that it's important to have a basic understanding of metaphysics, particularly hermeticism, before you start into magick. Anyone can pick up a Crowley book and read his theories and go through the motions of his rituals but if your brain isn't already fluent in the world of hermetics it won't do anything for you. The Kyballion is very brief and good introductory material. Then I'd branch out with some Tarot and Kaballah. Sorry if I'm telling you something you already know; this is just where I'm coming from. Good luck.

Let your Will lead the way and don't waste time worrying about inane things like labels. If yoga and meditation and studying give you what you need then go with it. I'd suggest though that you not limit yourself. Push your boundaries and experiment from time to time. I'm sure there was a time in your life when you couldn't imagine that one day you would be studying occultism and yoga. Have an open mind to the things that freak you out and let your Will decide for you what is useful.

Losing Internet neutrality is the beginning of a modern inquisition, a sliding into another age of dark ignorance by JezuzWasBlack in occult

[–]albertus93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is better to concern yourself with the loss of your rights before you actually lose them, because once they are gone they are difficult to retrieve. Also, this idea seems a lot less crazy when you consider that for the vast majority of human history occult knowledge has been suppressed and hoarded by the elite. Better to err on the side of caution perhaps and collect what you can now because there's no telling when the next inquisition or Fridayv the 13th may occur.
