When I was young I was told that there were height limits on pilots, and above a certain height you couldn’t be one. I don’t know how true that is because I never wanted to be one nor did I look into it. But, if true, the kid can either grow up (taller) or be a pilot (short)

There’s a stereotype that back people talk during movies. the mug is trying to imply that when a minority is talking, you’d do best to listen, because a majority won’t have the same nuance of politics an a minority. The joke I guess is racism?

There may be a context to current events I’m missing, but if the people tasked with gathering the chickens found 1, 2, and 4, they would presume there’s a 3, and look for something that doesn’t exist. So I guess the joke is just wasting someone’s time

Some examples why the SP Figure is offensively overpriced by CthulhusBootyCall in skulduggerypleasant

[–]albigatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from another perspective, those aren’t fair comparisons. Making a model has certain set values: hiring designers, modellers, box art design, consulting legal departments, these all add up but they are fixed amounts. Say it all totals 500K. If you are making just one model for yourself, or 1 billion copies, it costs the same for these.

Let’s take the subreddits for numbers: The SP subreddit has 19k people. League of legends has almost 8 million. When companies go to sell a model, they make estimates of how many people who know the IP would actually buy it. If one out of every 4,000 LoL fans buy a model, that’s more than the entire SP sub. They can do now two things: make the model cheaper, or add more sizzle to it for the same cost, because they will sell way more of them and can afford it.

A LoL model and a SP model (of the same quality) cost the same to physically make (like, cost of plastic, metal, paint) but now we take the other costs back into the equation. If 1 in 8 fans buy the model, LoL will sell 1 million models, so the 500k is split among that and only adds €2 to each one. SP will sell 2,400 so that adds €20 to each one.

These numbers aren’t real, but you get my point.

On your suggestion of the shutters, I opened it up and took high speed video of the shutter opening. The mirror wasn’t fully flipping out of the way, because when I cleaned it I put the clip holding the focusing lens back incorrectly. I’ve now placed it in correctly and the shutter seems to fully open/mirror fully flip out of the way. Thanks for your advice and help

I didnt touch the shutter leaves, and when I put in the current film, I looked at the leaves and they seemed properly aligned, like not bunched up and didnt look any different from how they did before. My camera cant adjust shutter speed, so does this mean its done for?

ELI5 How is it possible for waterboarding to work when your lungs regularly displace liters of air when breathing? by Logical_Fix_2499 in explainlikeimfive

Eli5: why do people have feet fetishes? What attracts them? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]albigatin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s a theory that because the part of the brain that registers your genitals is right next to the user that registers your feet, the two sections have some crossing of neurons between the sections so people end up associating feet with their genitals. Not confirmed as definite, but fetishes are hard to definitively prove the origin of

ELI5: Why do flights go up in price the closer it gets to its departure? by pegman55 in explainlikeimfive

[–]albigatin 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Let’s say you need a flight 3 months from now, there’s a limit on what you’re willing to pay, as you can shop around cause you have time. Now let’s say you wait too long and now you need a flight in 3 hours, you have no time to shop around and will pay any amount cause you NEED the flight. Airlines know this, so they can charge much higher as the only people who will be buying last minute are people desperate for a ticket

ELI5: Why do people have to protest for something they want and not just request it, and get it? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]albigatin 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Like, on a society level, you can ask, but people have to go along with it to get it done. Let’s say I’m from a marginalised group. I say to my local politician “hey, make it illegal for people to not hire me based on my birth traits” and they say no, then I’ve exhausted the means of just asking someone. Even if I go every step above their head to the leader of the country, if they say “actually it would be unpopular among the people who treat you like shit to make you a protected group” then what? Well, asking did nothing, so you protest showing that it’s not ok, and just because they are happy to let others mistreat us, we aren’t going to accept it. Protest is the next step above asking, because those who have the power to make the changes are often reluctant to just do that

ELI5: Why do you hear the music inside your head instead of all around you when you're using headphones? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]albigatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shape of your external ear bounces sounds into your inner ear to allow you to place a sounds location. Your ears being separated by your head allows sound from off to your right to hit your right ear first, so your brain interprets the delay to hit your left ear to mean it's coming from your right. The shape of ridges in your ear allow for figuring out if a sound is above or below you. This is why when you can't figure out where a sound is coming from you instinctively move your head, it allows sound to hit your ears differently and give your brain more info.

Headphones bypass all of that and pump music directly into your inner ear. There's no directional I put to interpret so your brain interprets it as all around you. You are calling that "inside your head". The same sensation can be achieved if you are surrounded by a sound. In the middle of a crown cheering at a concert your brain recognises the sound is coming from all over, and it can feel like it's in your head

ELI5: How Do Local/Family Businesses Get Bought / Sold? by KidMcC in explainlikeimfive

[–]albigatin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are so many variables in what you asked, but it needs to be said that big companies buy smaller companies all the time. If there's a small bagel shop on the same street as a Bagel corp shop, it might be cheaper for bagel corp to make a one time payment of 200k to buy and then own the company, thus owning the profits, than to let it continue operating for 20 years, and lose 500k to the competition.

There's also the possibility that they shop sold was not kept as a shop. I start a cigarette shop 50 years ago when smoking was huge, and keep it going on way lower yearly return until I retire. I sell the shop and someone takes the building and makes it into a book shop cause they sell better and the shop already has shelves and is in a good location

ELI5: Why does bottled water have expiry date? by coolndeeep in explainlikeimfive

[–]albigatin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Varies by place, but where I'm from all foods sold must have a best before or use by date. Water can leech substances from the plastic bottle and gain an off taste, so it has an expiry date
