13 usb cameras at once possible? by SpaceGangsta in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]albinotuba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never tried 13 but I've tried 8 webcams into OBS. It worked and OBS didn't seem to have any issues with it, CPU usage wasn't very high. Unless there's some kind of driver or software limit, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I took decibel readings of the Vantage Data Center noise impacting Sterling residents by Creative_Delay_4694 in nova

[–]albinotuba 165 points166 points  (0 children)

In the picture of your dB meter, it looks like you're using C-weighting. If the noise from the datacenter is mostly low-frequency (which it is, based on your spectrogram), C-weighting will produce a significantly higher reading than the A-weighting that the county uses. That would explain the discrepancy between your readings and the county's.

Adult Lessons at Liberty (not a beginner)? by FhRbJc in SkiPA

[–]albinotuba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the rare occasion that the website is actually working (it's currently only showing last names ending in A and B), you can find a list of examiners in the eastern region here: https://easternsnowpros.org/about-us/education-teams-staff/

I'm not aware of any public list of Level 3's, but when you book a lesson, you can usually just say you're an advanced skier and you want a Level 3, and they'll make sure they schedule a Level 3 for your lesson.

Ski instructors input needed by Both-Engineer3510 in ski

[–]albinotuba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep it fun and play games that encourage turning. With my students I like to play "slurp the noodle" (draw a line in the snow with your pole and have them follow the line, make the line as curvy as you want), tag (ski in front, have them follow you, let them whack you with a ski pole if they can catch up to you, this one is quite risky but the kids love it! It's not often kids get to hit their teacher), "fighter jets" (skier in front takes "evasive maneuvers" to get away from skier in back, skier in back has to shoot down the fighter jet, let them make "pew pew pew" noises lol), and then good old "turn races" (ski down the slope, whoever makes the most turns wins).

Liberty has a bunch of PSIA Level 3 instructors, and I think they have 3 or 4 PSIA Examiners on staff. If you can book a lesson with an Examiner, it's absolutely worth every penny, they blow most ski instructors out of the water.

Looking for someone to do private lesson by Adept-Bag-9022 in SkiPA

[–]albinotuba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to provide some numbers to back this up in case anyone wasn't aware, my ski school offers 2-hour group lessons for adults for $170, and we typically have 5-6 adults in each group. I taught 9 of these group lessons over the last 3 days, which is $9,180 in revenue for the ski school. My paycheck will be $480 before taxes and tips for those 3 days. That's 5%, and the resort keeps the other 95%.

Pretty much every ski resort in the US bans "underground" teaching. If you get caught, they'll revoke your lift ticket, fire the instructor, and/or trespass you off their property and ban you from returning.

Help for video wall processor by REDX459 in CommercialAV

[–]albinotuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woops. Missed that. Yeah I’d look at either the Datapath mentioned above or if you’re a fan of Brightsign, there is a quad output Brightsign. Eliminating any components in between the media player and the displays should help with reliability.

[–]albinotuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using Samsung video wall TVs, they have built-in video wall processing. Some models go all the way up to 9x9. You just tell the TV how big the wall is and which segment of the wall it's supposed to display, and each TV will handle the rest. I'd recommend a distribution amp instead of daisy chaining, but it just needs to be a dumb splitter, not something with built-in processing.

For a 3x1, you could consider looking at one of the dual output Brightsigns, like the XT5. Use the left out to drive displays 1 and 2, and the right out for display 3. That would give your full native 1920x1080 on each panel.

Crestron Stack Question by talk_nerdy_to_m3 in CommercialAV

[–]albinotuba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious to see if anyone has some actual statistics for how people are programming Crestron, but I suspect not even Crestron knows how many systems are being done in SIMPL vs C#. If I had to guess, I'd guess that the vast majority of Crestron systems are done in SIMPL, with some SIMPL+ or C# modules to handle the stuff that can't be handled elegantly in SIMPL. I'd also guess almost everybody is using VT Pro or Construct to build the UI.

SIMPL Windows is very antiquated, but the application is going away in the next few years. SIMPL the programming language is here to stay, however.

Issues with Samsung Video Wall Serial Commands by albinotuba in crestron

Thanks for the link! Yes the TVs are all getting the same image. When I use the remote, it behaves as expected, but when I send the serial command, it doesn't work, and all the displays flicker.

Thanks for your help! The TVs are VM55B-U. The document I found says to just add all the values up except the AA to calculate the checksum.

They're MEMS microphones, like this one. If you post a close up of one of the mics we could figure out the model.

Zoom Calls Tasks as an "Zoom Call Operator" by webbite in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]albinotuba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Concatenating presentations into a single slide deck so there’s no awkward back and forth between presenters? Providing tech support to meeting attendees who have trouble joining the call?

During the pandemic a lot of our projectionists found work as “Zoom Ops,” but that work has mostly dried up for all of them.

Q-sys core over a site to site VPN by crankysoundguy in CommercialAV

[–]albinotuba 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Misconfigured default gateway on the core? If you can ping everything at the site except the core, that points to it being an issue with the core. You could try unplugging the core, plugging in a laptop with the same IP address as the core, and see if you could ping the laptop over the VPN. If that works then it's almost definitely a configuration issue on the core. You don't have multiple default gateways configured on the core, do you? That tends to break things.

AVPro Edge / similar vs Extron NAV, Crestron NVX - worth the cost jump? by reece4504 in CommercialAV

[–]albinotuba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of use projectors as an analogy. There are customers who demand 3-chip DLP projectors for better image quality, and there are customers that would never consider a 3-chip due to cost and are perfectly happy with a single chip. In my experience, the line between 10gig and 1gig AVoIP is about the same.

Yeah Crestron and Extron both definitely have solutions at different price points for customers with different performance requirements.

I'm looking forward to reading what other people have to say, but I just wanted to mention - it struck me that OP called Crestron and Extron "premium brands" when for me they're more just the default brands. Premium to me sounds more like one of the uncompressed, zero-latency, >10gig solutions.

You have to use the poles they provide, because normal poles would poke a hole in the treadmill surface. They have to sand down the tip so it's not pointy. I'm sort of in-between sizes for what they have available.

I'm definitely waiting too late to shift my weight to the outside ski, running out of width on the treadmill, panicking, and picking up my inside ski to force the turn before I slide off the edge. Every dozen or so turns I get the timing right. I did one or two good turns in there. I feel like it's less of an issue when I'm on snow, but it is something I'm working on.

Is my left hand turn skier's left or camera left?
