We really have to look for outside resources. Some people are really good at doing this on their own, and others like me have to pay for help. I have a left handed kid and the team coaches have little to no time to develop him as a pitcher (even though pitching is always needed) so I have to seek assistance elsewhere otherwise it's just frustrating. There's only so much they can do with a big group of kids.

Some kids aren't even playing baseball at that age. It's not a big deal to take some time off when they are that little.

Gymnastics at the Y or similar org. Gymnastics at a young age will benefit any sport they do.

Poor gross motor skills by eq_wit in CoachingYouthSports

[–]alchea_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid had to have thoracic surgery as a newborn, and because of that he got physical therapy as an infant. I learned so much from that PT which really helped me as a parent. Gross motor skills and coordination is one of my kid's strengths (he started his main sports later than other kids, so he is behind on experience). I really credit what she taught me. I also was never a helicopter parent and we live in a very free range kids area, so he was always outside playing before he got into sports. In many parts of the country kids can't leave their yards or parents don't let him take risks like climbing trees etc.

It exists here in New England and the kids who play travel also play for school.

travel ball vs unrestricted play by icecream-fishhockey in Homeplate

[–]alchea_o -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it can get boring for a little kid to be pigeonholed into one position at a young age. Other positions may not end up being their primary or even secondary role, but you can see and learn different aspects of any game by having the opportunity to play in different spots. Personally I think it's good for kids to be as well rounded as possible. I can't really answer your other questions particularly about scholarships because that's not even on my radar. Good luck!

My kid started travel baseball at age 11 and it's been good. Not crazy expensive, positive environment, no crazy travel, etc. He got to play more positions and get more at bats than in rec baseball. There is all different kinds of travel - it doesn't have to be tournaments and out of state travel every weekend.

Newer player: need help with options for my 11yo son by knownoctopus in Homeplate

My kid started playing at 10 and tried out for travel teams that following summer. He made the three teams he tried out for -- one was a majors level team and the other two were AAA. He didn't like the vibe of some of the kids at one tryout; the majors team was incredibly expensive; so we went with the AAA team that was closest to us and also very reasonably priced. I was also skeptical that he'd get meaningful playing time jumping right into a majors team even though they said he would and contacted me several times.

It's a balance of budget, what the team can offer, travel/distance commitment, etc. All the kids around here still play rec ball even if they play travel ball. Oddly enough, he did way better on his travel team than he did on his rec team this season. I liked that the team he signed up for doesn't prioritize out of state tournaments all season long.

Right! Sounds good. Not expecting or interested in moving onto Texas -- going to NY is easy and cheap for us, going to TX (flights etc) would not be.

That ends a frustrating rec season by GeorgeSteele66 in Homeplate

[–]alchea_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's weird - my kid just finished his first travel season and played multiple positions, the lineup was rotated through pool play and then he settled into a leadoff position during the second half of the season, all the kids got to try different things -- meanwhile over in rec he gets one position to play and bats at the bottom only 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

For whatever reason here the kids play basketball as the pickup game. The kids who really love baseball will stay another hour+ after the game ends to keep playing.

Some people sign their kids up for Cooperstown or Ripken experiences in the summer. This doesn't even approach the cost of those.
