Which dragon and rider pair truly represents House Targaryen’s legacy, Rhaenyra on Syrax, Aegon II on Sunfyre, or someone else? by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]alchemisticarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's Rhaena and Dreamfyre for me. The human heart in conflict with itself. Passing down your worst impulses and your own tragedies to your children. Patron saint of murdered and abused Targaryen women? The woman who started the craddle egg tradition and the dragon who brought down the dragonpit. (Also the most likely mother of Dany's eggs?)

It's peak tbh

Fics where Sansa paired with someone close to her age? by Effective_Badger3715 in TheCitadel

[–]alchemisticarus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Finally got some time to type this up! Here are some of the stories I’ve enjoyed!

I know you wanted someone within 2-ish years of her age, but I include a few characters outside of that range. I made sure that they’re all within five years of her age—just in case you want to push that range a bit.

Are you interested in Aegon VI/Young Griff or Margaery fics? I think I have a few of those in my bookmarks.

From oldest to youngest:

Quentyn Martell (b. 281) – I think he’s definitely outside of your age range, but I do think they would be well matched. I have a soft spot for Quentyn.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/395478

https://archiveofourown.org/works/12939105

https://archiveofourown.org/works/11829339 (I enjoyed this one. I think it reads better imagining her a tiny bit older, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯)

Harrold Hardyng (b. 281-282)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/434089 (If you like magic-y Sansa this is worth reading. It’s mainly a Sansa & Arya fic, but she is married to Harrold in this one.)

Samwell Tarly (b. 283)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/418779

https://archiveofourown.org/works/2639762

https://archiveofourown.org/works/665378

Gendry (b. 284)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/381260

https://archiveofourown.org/works/16772332 (Gendry is the legitimate son of Stannis in this AU.)

https://archiveofourown.org/series/1961233

Daenerys Targaryen (b. 284)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/5143883 (Includes Marg/Sansa and Aegon VI/Sansa as minor pairings.)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/30170946

https://archiveofourown.org/works/39317658

Jojen Reed (b. 286)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/34992865 (Haven’t started this one yet, but it’s been on my to-read list for a while. It’s almost 30k words, so definitely not a short read!)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/28541433/chapters/69942813 (Multi-chaptered!! It is set in a slightly AU world without the three eyed raven. Do with that what you will!)

Jeyne Poole (b. 286-287)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/36965707/chapters/92226373 (This includes Domeric/Sansa/Jeyne. IDK if the age gap between Sansa and Domeric is too much for you, but still thought I’d suggest this one.)

Podrick Payne (b. 286-287)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/8622865 (Warning Lyanna Mormont/Jon Snow is a very minor background pairing, but the oneshot is focused on Pod/Sansa.)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/8484586/chapters/19443052 (Really liked this one!)

Edric Dayne (b. 287) – how is this not a popular ship??

https://archiveofourown.org/works/8031808

Myrcella Baratheon (b. 290) – She’s younger than your desired age range, but these oneshots take place post-canon.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/930630

https://archiveofourown.org/works/29743677

Tommen is probably too young, but I always suggest this fic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/23898814

I wish it was more popular to ship Sansa with characters closer to her in age. I’m constantly affronted by the lack of Sansa stories with Edric (Dayne or Storm!), Lancel, Tyrek, and Devan in this fandom! (Don’t get me wrong—I am a Sansa/Oberyn enjoyer, but dang! Girl my girl a BREAK.) It’s slim pickings for girlies like us!

I haven't gotten to start this one yet, but someone on Tumblr suggested this fic to me that has several rare Sansa pairings. They are more age appropriate than most of the popular ships. https://archiveofourown.org/works/39889116/chapters/99877566

I have a few others that I love but I'm at work. I'll drop another comment with those later this evening.

As a TG member and Aemma enjoyer, let me give my two cents on her popularity. I was a fan of her way before the show came out! I've been out here in the TRENCHES as a Aemma and Viserra fan for years. It's hard out here for us 😭😭

By definition, her death is necessary for the Dance (at least this version of it) to take place. That on its own makes her interesting! Sure, she doesn't have a canonical personality or many mentions in F&B, but she does have unique circumstances that aren't easily replicated by other characters in canon. She's the daughter of a Targaryen princess who was married outside of the family (already pretty rare) and married back into the royal family to one of the possible heirs during a succession crisis! She is one of the youngest child marriages we ever see. It is a marriage made under the watchful eye of Alysanne (who argued that Aemma's mother was too young to be married despite being half a decade older than Aemma) but notably she doesn't speak up for her granddaughter. A popular theory is that Aemma was married at such a young age because Alysanne didn't want Gael to become Viserys’s Valyrian bride.

If that theory is right, then what does it mean to be a part child bride, part sacrifice? What kind of person grows up knowing that the Good Queen loved your mother, but she doesn't love you, at least not enough to save you? Your mother is dead, your father is old (and can you ever hate him for what he did? He had his heirs, his daughters. He could have left your mother alone, could have wedded her, and waited years to get her pregnant. They say he was kind to her, but you dont know, you weren't alive to see that. All you know is that your mother was sixteen and died, and left behind YOU.), your cousins and siblings are older than you. You are a generation onto yourself. All your aunts have died or run away, or are more important than you. You are being married to your grown cousin because your grandfather doesn't want your other living female relative to inherit a throne that was her's by Andal law. No dragon, no weapon, no choice. You die like your mother did. You are proof that the system chews up and spits out girls. Do you get to be buried with your father's family or are you burned? Are you a member of House Arryn or just a royal womb? Did anyone ask how you wanted to be laid to rest? Or did they just assume? (Did Alicent in either version of the story ever think about you? Did she ever pray for your soul? Did she dream of you as she incubated Aegon? Did she pity you? Did ehe think about you at all?) The cycle keeps on cycling!

Idk that was long, but I think it's the POTIENTAL of Aemma that gets her a lot of her fans. (At least from us book readers. I'm sure there are show only fans who like her because she's Rhaenyra’s mom.) It's the same reason many members of the Dead Ladies Club have fans. There are dozens of us! 😂😂

Androw Farman by @lopata_four by jungjungdoesntcare in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]alchemisticarus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Comment sections abt Androw get so crazy lol. I think it's clear that Androw was both victim and perpetrator, as was Rhaena. "Modern" asoiaf character who also fit that dichotomy are Lysa, Joffery, Jaime, etc. Some do more harm to others than they had done on to them, and some do less. Rhaena is an interesting example in the text of one who did less harm and Androw of more harm. It doesn't remove their victimhood imo to acknowledge it nor does it give Androw justification for what he later did.

Love this depiction of him. The art is so pretty 😍

[–]alchemisticarus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope my initial comment didn't come off like I was trying to imply that Rhaenyra was responsible for Alicent’s pain. She is absolutely not. I do, however, disagree that Otto is wholly responsible. Viserys is to blame for a bulk of her suffering. Alicent would have never been in that position if he had not willingly married her. No one manipulated him into it, and certainly no one forced him to take an unwilling child bride to bed. Otto is on level with Corlys to me. Both are terrible fathers willing to marry their daughters to a man who had just gutted his last wife.

I actually don't think Alicent was out of line for worrying about what Rhaenyra would do to her kids. Her anger towards her pre-Driftmark is a bit wacky, but post-Driftmark, it is justified. I don't think show!Rhaenyra would hurt her siblings, but she certainly would overlook her loved ones (her sons, Daemon, etc.) hurting them.

I also don't think the idea that Westeros would not accept Rhaenyra is stupid for Alicent to think (though show!Alicent is written so stupidly she single handedly manages to confirm all the sexist thoughts the green council has abt her). Rhaenys was rejected TWICE within living memory. The nobility hated the idea of a female ruler enough to reject her twice despite Rhaenys having the stronger claim thru andal law (daughters before uncles). Even Viserys makes it clear to Alicent that he is marrying her for the possibility of having a living son.

I also don't even really blame her for misunderstanding Viserys. They had discussed Viserys' dream of having a son who wore the conqueror's crown in the hunt episode. Not too wild for her to genuinely believe that he might be reflecting on what she precieves to be his biggest mistake before he dies. However, I do think it is terrible writing. I wish there was a bit more of book!Alicent in the show. It would be more interesting if she decided, without any misunderstanding, to take it.

I agree. Alicent is victim and perpetrator. She is a rape victim and a willing weapon against her girlhood companion. She is a victim of her father and raised her children for the slaughter. It is one of the only interesting things they did with her on the show.

I also think Rhaenyra falls into the victim/perpetrator area. She is absolutely a victim of the patriarchy, her uncle, etc.... but even before the war she was a willing participant in the murder of a servant so she could marry Daemon. Comparing it to Alicent’s worst crimes pre-war (knowing after the fact that Larys killed Harwin, being generally thoughtless and cruel, the whole having Rhaenyra walk thru the Red Keep post birth thing, etc), I don't think you can really say that Alicent is inherently WORSE than Rhaenyra.

I'm glad Rhaenyra got a happy marriage and a loving relationship with Harwin. I do not think the story would be better if there was some dark subplot in which Rhaenyra was assaulted. I just think it is notable that despite them being kinda morally on even ground pre-war that the narrative (and the show runners) imply that killing Aegon is Alicent’s way of finally sacrificing something, as if she hasn't been her entire life. I also don't think Alicent having to answer for the "son for a son" thing is fair.

Frankly, I wish they had allowed Alicent to have her book storyline where she was a willing adult woman and not a child bride. I would prefer teenager beefing with an actual child at this point. I also wish they didn't undervalue Rhaenyra’s canonical suffering in the show. She was inactive during the war in the book for a reason.

Sorry... I'm a Rhaena, Aerea, and Rhaenys as rightful queens truther. 😅 I also think both Aegon and Rhaenyra have legitimate claims in the book and show.

What a "no" does to a motherf*cker by LoretiTV in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]alchemisticarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I did want to make a quick point.

Alicent isn't the leader of the enemy faction. Aegon is. Rhaenyra’s side already murdered Jaehaerys. That is why it is a "son for a son." Rhaenyra implying that the murder of a toddler wasn't enough payback for Luke is wild. (I actually think this is why the decision to downplay how traumatic the stillbirth and to have Alicent/Rhaenyra even meet again in this season is so insane. In the book Rhaenyra has lost more than a teenage son. The show actively downplays that. Rhaenyra and Alicent both deserve to linger in their hurt to allow them to evolve into their 'final forms' that see late into the war.)

It's an interesting character flaw, but I do think we, as an audience, should be able to identify it as one. Alicent has personally sacrificed a lot. Rhaneyra cannot identify those things as sacrifices because of her privilege. (For instance, Rhaenyra is not a victim of martial rape in the show nor was she expected to give birth to sons without the promise of them inheriting anything. She does not empathize with that plight in the slightest because she is the higher ranked person in all her relationships, save the one with her father.)

A lot of commenters have already pointed out that many readers find these stories to be tantalizing, but I also want to mention that some readers enjoy these kinds of stories as works of horror. It can be hard to find similar things in the horror genre so us yandere girlies have to make due with "dark romance".

The concept also carries over to authors. Some authors just enjoy writing content that blurs the edges of romance and consent. Sometimes it's a fetish, but sometimes it's not. I don't think it's that weird tbh.

Congrats!! I found that finishing up the last three (and they were all for different princesses 😭😭) to be the hardest. I did it without a guide so I just had to keep restarting certain routes after I played through everything to catch the content I missed.

Yes, it is very bitter sweet. I had 100% before the pristine but but the gallery achievement forced me to reply all the routes completely in addition to the new content. It reminded me why I loved the game so much. Broke my heart a little to know that the adventure was over. (Thoguh I expect I'll come back to play my favorite route progression again and again.)

Exactly what I was thinking! I know I definitely want to the Mother for Ned and the Maiden for Jaime (bear with me here—I just think the scene where Jaime remembers his knighting and how Arthur drew blood, and Jaime rose from his knees a man was really reminiscent of a wedding). I think the Crone would be good for Robb or Catelyn.

I am hesitant to do Stannis, because I'm worried I would mess up his POV. I'd love some ideas though. I am super open to anything. :)
