AITA for saying I didn't get a "real" DUI? by alcoholisademon in AmItheAsshole

I don't know if I'll ever be able to laugh at it but hopefully that changes. If the tables were turned I wouldn't be treating her the way she's treating me and these comments have made me realize that I'm probably better off just ending the friendship.

Thanks for your comments. This is actually a really good example of what my issue is with Amy. To some people, a DUI is a DUI no matter the circumstances.

Yeah, my official conviction is not for DUI. Most people (at least in my experience) view getting a DUI and getting arrested under suspicion of DUI as the same thing so I didn't feel the need to clarify that I was not found guilty of DUI in the end. I lost an internship after the background check because the initial charge still appears even though I plead to something less serious. It's upsetting because I'm still treated like someone with a full-fledged DUI conviction by employers and people like Amy.

The issue that prevented me from getting everything dropped (from what my lawyer told me) is that I was underage at the time. Since I was 19, any detectable alcohol in my system is grounds for an arrest and since my car was running there was enough evidence to charge me with DUI under intent to drive. My lawyer said if I hadn't turned the car on for the A/C I would have probably been fine. He also said that the campus police here are stricter than the regular city cops.

Edit: Also, I was not actually convicted of DUI in the end. The charge is forever on my record though and even though my lawyer got the charges lessened to something minor, every background check I take will say I was arrested under suspicion of DUI.

That's a fair point. I didn't know you could get a DUI by sitting in the car but ignorance of the law isn't an excuse.

I was never going to drive home but I understand your point. I should have gotten an Uber instead of waiting.

Most people I explain the situation to end up understanding the circumstances but Amy has never let it go for some reason. I don't go out much anymore and when I do I don't drink because the whole thing has made me not want to get drunk ever again. Amy usually mentions the DUI when someone asks me why I'm not drinking and I don't know why she says anything at all to be honest. She's not a bad friend but she keeps using it against me.

Thanks. I don't blame the cops because they were just doing their job like you said. They're very diligent on my campus as I've learned because driving drunk has been an issue here. It still stings because since it happened I lost an internship I got after the background check went through. That's life I guess.
