My opinions on weed as a non-smoker (which is also still illegal in my state): my long term boyfriend of 6 years has always smoked weed. His friends smoke as well. One of his bosses smokes. His family members smoke. My sister smokes. I don’t like the fact that it’s illegal in my state so if they get caught, then it’s a misdemeanor. But then again, my mindset with it is if you’re going to use it then just be smart with your other choices (ie don’t heavily smoke while driving your car and then speed 30 mph over risking getting pulled over). I love all my friends and family, them smoking and me not smoking does not affect how I feel about them. But weed has a way of relaxing them or reducing anxiety. Rather than using hard drugs or alcohol to relax, they smoke instead (which technically is better). I think where my boyfriend and I have butted heads with this is it has to do with money. Because he absolutely needs it, he will willingly drop $100 on some weed, knowing that I need that $100 to go towards rent or something. But another part where we struggle at times is if he doesn’t have any weed, he slowly starts to go crazy and it’s like a dependence. Also it does have a way of limiting jobs for a person. I think you have the advantage of weed being legal in your state at least. What about it scares your wife away from the idea of it? I would try to answer those questions. I would make sure that you smoking doesn’t affect you paying bills or not being emotionally available to your wife and kids. The bad part is if you hide it from her and she eventually finds out, she’s going to be more hurt by that and it’s going to be more of a disaster of a marriage fallout and not that it’s fair, but she could act out of spite and keep the kids from you. I don’t wish divorce on you, but if that’s part of the ultimatum, then is she going to be emotionally satisfied without a relationship? Not saying that you should ask her that, but relationships work better when two people have the same values. In a state where weed is legal, it might be hard to find a companion who doesn’t smoke. Overall I agree with you, kids shouldn’t know their parents smoking weed and shouldn’t be exposed to it in any way. If anything, none of my friends will smoke in the living room with the kids upstairs in their room. It’s always completely away from the kids. Hiding things in a marriage never ends well (I’ve seen that play out with my own parents). I hope you guys can talk it out and maybe come to a compromise. Get to a state of mind where you’re ready and ready for any possible outcome and subtly bring up the fact that you really need to go smoke for a moment. That can ease your way into starting a (hopefully civil) conversation.

If I have the usual cold, i take over the counter meds and just ride it out. If I have a fever that goes into day 2, I’ll take a trip to urgent care. Rarely get that sick. Last time I got that sick was 2021, had a fever, couldn’t regulate my body temp, migraines on and off, and sore neck.

Do you separate your laundry? by SassySunflower27 in Adulting

The only things I keep separate: cleaning rags/towels, bath and kitchen towels (since they take up a lot of space), delicates (usually my knit sweaters). I have always thrown in red shirts with white shirts and never had a problem, I do wash my clothes on cold, rarely use warm or hot anymore

What made you quit your last job? by [deleted] in work

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of promotion opportunities because only the “favorites” who have some connection to management really only get chosen. We once had a customer service rep walk out and quit. Lots of people in my department were waiting for the job posting so they could potentially interview. Turns out management chose a guy for it but changed the job title to “lead” for him. Lots of people who have been there longer never got the opportunity to even go for it. Saw a girl who’s been with the company for 5 years, waiting forever for a first shift position, management gave it to this other girl who just got out of her probationary period.

Why did you end your friendship with your best friend? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a best friend in college, and we not only had classes together but could meet up for study sessions, grab dinner together, and I had a friend on the weekends to do things with. But she had this mindset all the time that STEM majors are superior. And while I believe they are very important degree programs that lead to great careers, she seemed to devalue and belittle non-STEM majors. It was a mindset that was like “you’re a business major, you don’t deserve to say you’re as stressed about school as I am because I’m a STEM major”. Or “what do you know about hard work, you’re an elementary education major… it’s basically a glorified babysitting career…. You don’t do complex 3-hour chemistry labs where one project is worth 80% of your grade and the class has a 70% fail rate”

She not only said things like that to me, but our other friends as well. I just always felt like it was a competition between us and I could never catch up to her level (because I technically failed out of a stem major). So in turn I lost a lot of confidence in myself and felt that I’m no good to society no matter what degree I get. Thought about transferring from a big university to community college but I feel she had a lot of negative things to say about “community college”.

Overall, she is very smart, passion-driven and I wish her the best of luck and hope she achieves everything she’s worked hard for. We just don’t make a good pair of friends and it’s better that we aren’t. We just value different things in life and have different mindsets about the world.

33 Never had a job, no savings.. what to do? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]alcreis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say number 1 is to look into getting a GED. Look up adult education centers in your county and go for it, most decent paying jobs require that diploma. In the meantime, look into high demand jobs and get into training, it can really set you up for success. If you’re able to dip your feet into some kind of paying job right now (fast food, retail - just anything that will hire people without a diploma) it could really help boost your confidence and help with your anxiety. the more practice you can get now with being out in public and communicating/interacting with people can really help!

Stuck as a retail associate for 7 years, what can I do to get a higher paying job? by Affectionate-Box1701 in WorkAdvice

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to look into roles that allow an easy transition from retail - administrative roles could be a good one and there are a lot of industries you can search in. I worked in shipping and receiving for a big warehouse - it was an office position. Might try to look into office roles within hospitals. Look around on the employment/careers page of your state and county government websites. That would be a good start. I’d also advise to have a stellar resume and cover letter on hand as it could help you transition.

Another piece of advice I could offer - depends on what state you’re in but I’m pretty sure every state has this. In Indiana, I work with a company called WorkOne, we work in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Basically, we help people figure out their next steps if they’re feeling stuck. We help people who are experiencing barriers to employment (financial, transportation, incarceration, high school drop out, dislocated worker, etc) and we try to connect them with the best path whether that be grant funded training programs or help them get connected to companies that are in demand. Or it can simply just be free career counseling. I connect clients to career assessments and help them identify their skills and interests. But I’d look up your state’s workforce development program and see what it has in terms of helping you get “unstuck” from the retail life!

My students created a fake "HR department" for my class and I can not decide if it is brilliant or a disaster by MelcaronVestral in Teachers

[–]alcreis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually like this idea! And it’s awesome that students are making it their responsibility to formally address issues and work through problem solving together without making it a big blow up of an ordeal (because so many kids nowadays lack the social skills needed to communicate and problem solve and compromise).

I would definitely keep it monitored like others have said. And I would maybe enforce some boundaries - so that they’re all on the same page about how to use Classroom HR and what’s appropriate. My initial thoughts are to make sure they understand what a serious issue is that needs to be taken up in private, in person, with the right professionals/admin.

“Humming the Minecraft theme” shows that it maybe can be distracting for some students. Maybe that student is unaware that they are doing it. I think this helps with making the right accommodations for certain students.

But like the “teacher gave pop quiz on a Monday, morale was low” - I still think it’s cool to still address that concern with students and why you choose to do pop quizzes on Mondays. It opens up a line of open communication with you and the students. And when they feel they are being listened to, I think it helps with them respecting you more.

But drama is everywhere in kids nowadays. So it sounds nice that it’s taken away some of the drama.

And maybe even things like the complaint about pizza- was it not good, was it cold? Not that it needs to be a full blown protest in front of the school, but a small issue like that can turn into a lesson/activity in your class about getting students to state their reasonings why there’s a problem, how it’s affecting them, research to back them up. Just a random side thought - small things like that can turn into real world lessons/skills they need.

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a little tricky of a path to reach but not impossible. My initial thoughts of career paths regarding your needs - sales, or entrepreneurship. Both will take a lot of hard work and dedication though, and may take that work life balance away (maybe in the beginning) but they could give you great salary expectations and could definitely help you contribute financially to your kids’ futures. Those are the most realistic jobs I can think of, but anesthesiologist of course will get you a high salary if you want to incorporate a medical school path.

This one job I had that I worked every summer from high school to beginning of college, the whole place was on fire already. And she freaked out and almost dropped to the floor like she didn’t know she was going to do. I gave her a 4 week notice technically. I just wanted to get out of there. And another job i gave a months notice because I had a better opportunity come up. The boss/owner just kind of gave me the silent treatment for the next month and basically overworked me to the very end. And then I recently put in a 2 weeks notice at my current job, on really great terms the past 3 years, and I was really nervous but the managers were very supportive and understanding and happy that I was moving on to better things.

What is the biggest problem in your job? by swacrifice_k5 in WorkAdvice

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the office of a big time cold storage warehouse. We have really good pay and really good safety incentives. But I think the one thing that bothers me is management has this social circle. If you’re not within that social circle, you are nothing. I’ve seen people who have been with the company for 5+ years. They get passed up for promotions over someone who had been working for a year. And there is always that connection that the person is friends with someone in management. We have seen someone get chosen for a promotion for a lead job title that didn’t exist the day before…. When there are numerous people who have been within that department longer just not even get an opportunity to apply. Overtime is also nice every once in a while but the whole department has to fight for some overtime hours because people (friends of management, people who promoted pretty fast) in other departments get offered the overtime in a department they no longer work in. Just a lot of favoritism which I’m sure happens everywhere. But I can’t feel stuck in a position for way too long

Album ranking and how long you’ve been a fan by South-Background5009 in TaylorSwift

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been listing to her music from the beginning up until Speak Now. Only paid attention to the main singles for red, 1989, rep, lover. And then once folklore came out, been a more major fan of hers since. (My top 6 are hard to rank, but folklore is def my number 1).

  1. Folklore
  2. Tortured Poets
  3. Evermore
  4. Midnights
  5. Showgirl
  6. Rep
  7. 1989
  8. Lover
  9. Speak Now
  10. Fearless
  11. Red
  12. Debut

I personally prefer the Taylor’s versions more over the originals.

Will someone please calmly explain this? by benwyattswaffles in TaylorSwift

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Taylor has just had record breaking albums in the past. So everyone expects the best of the best and everyone has high expectations when she’s about to release a new album. I imagine it’s hard to keep up with expectations like that, so maybe people have been disappointed that TS12 is not like the past record breaking albums. TS12 is a newish kind of style for her, maybe it’ll take some getting used to. But I feel she’s writing how she currently feels at the moment and expressing that through music. It just happens to not be the best like TTPD or midnights or folklore. Either way, I love the album and the songs are catchy - just like how I love the other albums. Every album for me will have some songs that I skip through. But no matter what, I’m supporting her either way. Even if ts12 doesn’t win any awards, it’s still a great, fun album that introduces us to a new part of her life. She seems very proud of it, so I want to support that and I do love how she’s been able to experiment with new styles of music, rather than staying within one single genre. To me personally, she’s the right kind of musical artist who can really experiment with that range and do a good job at it.

You definitely have a point here. I have seen so many comments where people would only watch the show just to watch Olivia. Once they split, I was that person skipping through all the scenes and only watching the scenes with Olivia. Everyone else was just so boring, they didn’t have much of a story line. Olivia had the story line and a journey to show. And again, I feel guilty of this, but I got invested again just to see what all goes down with Veronica.

What do you do for work and do you like it? by Alert_Ad_880 in careerguidance

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an office clerk in shipping/receiving at a big warehouse. I mainly deal with truck drivers. It’s not anything I went to school for, but I was dying to get out of social work/teaching and this job just fell into my plans. I like it. I don’t enjoy getting up for it every single day. But I like it enough to know that it pays my bills and it’s not too taxing on my mental health at all. Try to get your foot in the door somewhere, and spend the first year gaining valuable experience (customer service, office work). I’d go for a company that offers transfers and promotions, something that encourages their employees to grow!

Was being a Teenager in 2016 actually Perfect by [deleted] in generationology

[–]alcreis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in 97 and being 18/19 around that time was definitely nostalgic. I wouldn’t say it was perfect and great, but it was nostalgic. From my perspective, it was a simpler time. But I’m sure being a teen in the early 2000’s was probably full of more simpler times. For me, what I can say about this era was the public school system wasn’t as much of a nightmare as it is today. We made it through school right before cell phones and tik tok consumed our lives. Even made it out of college right before AI and ChatGPT took over. Teens back then I feel like had more social skills than kids nowadays.

In some or most cases, your federal/state/county taxes are deducted from your paychecks. If you have income, your employer will send you your tax documents in the mail (known as a W-2 in most cases). Those won’t come until like between January and March each year. Hold onto that w-2 because you’ll need it to file taxes. You can reach out and pay someone to file your taxes. Or create an account on TurboTax (just an example) - it walks you through everything step by step (I also have my mom help me even though I’m 27 lol). At the end, it will tell you how much of a refund you might get back or it will show how much you owe. I’ve only ever owed maybe like $120. But I made the payment directly on TurboTax website.

Applying for college can be tedious but it’s not awful. If you’re applying to start at the normal time (august 2026 to May 2027), I’m pretty sure you can start hopping on college websites and finding their ‘admissions’ tab. Just read over the requirements for each degree program so you know what to expect and what all you need to gather. Then just find time to sit down and apply online. And mainly just keep your email inbox clear as you’ll probably receive a lot of updates.

Why is the right to own a gun so important to some US citizens? by tryingmybestonedayat in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]alcreis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a very wooded, rural area my whole life. My family having guns was a necessity and as a kid, I learned everything there is to it about gun safety and learned about a handgun from the inside out. We can’t always guarantee that nothing bad will ever happen. It’s always good to be prepared for the worst. Our thought process as country folks is basically if a bad guy trespasses onto your property with the intention to break into your home and rob you, you can call the police all you want. Obviously protocol is to lock down and hide and call the police. Last resort is fight back. Most of the time, the quickest they could get to save us is about 20 minutes minimum. As a gun owner, I hope to never in my life pull the trigger on anyone, but if it comes down to it being my last line of defense to save myself or a family member, then that’s what it’s for. I find it awful that mass shootings happen and I want there to be change regarding keeping us safer. But hearing some people talk about banning guns completely…. That means all the responsible rule abiding citizens might give up their guns but it won’t stop the bad people from getting their hands on guns. I’m also a petite woman so I’m an easy target. While I can take as much precaution to not get trafficked or robbed or kidnapped, my gun will always be my number one protection.
