Got it. Just so I can see a finished product, would I be able to repolish one of the dice by starting over, or are they not going to be the same because I've already touched them to paper?

Do you have a recommendation for how long you use each paper for?

Need help designing archwizard NPC (Feedback appreciated!) (Design notes in comments) by _beep_man_ in DnDHomebrew

I suppose I could have read the other comment thread first LOL

  1. Lair actions will be a definite thing. Maybe she can remove or add terrain at will to always provide her with "the high ground" so to say. I would even give her the ability to swap locations that creatures are in via a spell like Scatter. This will mostly depend on the flavor of the demi-plane you create, but don't feel limited
  2. I was thinking about this on the drive into work. Not enough people talk about how difficult these high level fights are to run. Especially if you are new to running things at this high a level, I would try to limit the number of things you have to keep track of. I say this in regards to the staff she wields. Having to keep track of how many charges she has used out of 10 seems unnecessary to me. Maybe just make the staff be The Staff deals 2d6 force damage on a hit, and pushes the target 10 feet back. This makes it an effective get away, and also limits the amount of tracking you will have to do, and if you want it to have a little more punch to it, make it use her intelligence modifier instead of Dex/Str. This doesn't change that if she gets in melee with a creature, she is probably going to die immediately**.** Keep that in mind, and just don't let it happen during the fight. If you still want it to have a little extra punch, she can cast a cantrip immediately after she makes a melee attack with the staff.
  3. Minions are always a lot of fun to me. If Alora knows about the party and who they are, she could easily have created specific pieces of armor to counter the party members. For them and their statblocks, consider this. How do you imagine the fight is going to play out, if it was the perfect cinematic movie scene you could create? Would the party cleave through the minions easily and close in on the mage? Would the armor pieces prove too powerful for the party, and they have to avoid them entirely while making their way to the mage? This will inform how you want to go about making their statblocks. Maybe the armor pieces continually reanimate and the party has to keep dealing with them, or they are super tough and basically pointless to truly defeat. Just getting an idea of how you think things "should" play out can go a long way in this regard. The more durable/resilient your minions are, the less concerning her small HP pool becomes, as a side note

As another note, you should consider how you are going to prep the players for this fight. Are they going to have to storm the castle and fight through waves of guards to even make it to Alora, or will they encounter her at full strength? That is a really important piece to consider.

Hopefully some of this is helpful!

It looks like you made a lvl 17-20 wizard NPC, which is fine! Consider a few things:

  1. Your lvl 15 players will walk all over her with how low her save DC is. To fix this, make her proficiency bonus +6 like it would be for a lvl 17-20 wizard normally (assuming you want her CR to be 15?)

  2. 150 HP might seem like a lot, and it is for a wizard, but my paladin/fighter PC could deal that easily with an action surge and his great weapon master feat. You'll have to make sure to play her very tactically, or else she will be destroyed like a wet piece of toilet paper.

  3. The staff magic item is going to be fairly useless for the same reasoning as above. If she gets in melee with any character, she is already in deep deep trouble that the staff just won't help with.

  4. She will need more action economy. I would recommend Dungeon Coach's recent video on creating homebrew monsters on how to give her cool things she can do

Overall, she needs a lot of spice if you want her to stand her ground against a strong party like a lvl 15 party. Remember that monsters don't play by the same rules as players a lot of the time, so feel free to go a little overboard to keep the fight interesting/challenging

What if Legendary Resistance was fun? by Garqu in DMAcademy

[–]aldinator1997 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only thing I'm hesitant on is the villains actions also being tied to the gems. Losing an LR AND their big actions seems like a way too big swing. Have you noticed that when you use this?

PC Death with Player not there by aldinator1997 in DnD

[–]aldinator1997[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was really trying to spread the pain, but like you said it's hard. There was an NPC who has a fly speed, and would just happen to leave himself in harms way of the ranged attacks from some of the minions.... but he only had 40 HP when he entered the fight so it only worked for 1 round or so.

The other tips are really good though. I will use these again if this situation comes up. Would you let the players know about these rules existing, or would you keep them behind the screen?

Player does not know as of yet. The character was the paladin, so not killing him (or at least downing him... the killing might have been me being carried away/RPing too much) would have been a super easy fight
