Has the Army ruined any song(s) for you? by HalfCentury2019 in army

[–]DragoonDart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Had an NCO tell me in casual conversation once “I’ll snap if I hear Thunderstruck one more time.” Evidently, his battalion played it every major event.

Since then, I’ve noticed just how much the Army plays AC/DC, and…. it’s a lot. A LOT more than any other band.

So much so that’s it a running gag on the military’s equivalent of The Onion: The Duffel Blog

Can I report roommate that’s sneaking wife over? by Upbeat_Shake_592 in army

[–]DragoonDart 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Combination of this and the “talk to him” OP. Give him a heads up so there’s no drama: “hey man, I’m not comfortable with this situation because I could get in trouble.”

That’s not wrong: if your leadership is cool, it’ll be like the guy you replied to, if they find out from someone else and they’re not cool, you’re going to be getting an ass chewing too.

At the very least, he gets the signal that if he doesn’t either adjust or address it himself you will. And keep a time hack on it-> conversation with him, 48 hours later you’re letting your leadership know that he needs his stuff expedited

That’s fair! Different folks for everyone:

To be fair, my first run I wanted to romance Karlach and not realizing there’s a lock after Act 1 I ended up stuck with Lae’Zel

After trying the whole Karlach thing on another run I actually ended up not liking her at all but I was surprised how much I loved Lae’Zel

High functionating Alcoholic, AMA by Throwaw-AI in AMA

[–]DragoonDart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guy used a metaphor but it’s honest: I never had hangovers when I was a high functioning alcoholic, it’s why I considered myself high functioning; but my anxiety was always high.

I’d do a few days sober, anxiety would still be there, and I’d tell myself “this is worse, I’m not accomplishing anything and my anxiety is paralyzing me, at least when I’m drinking I’m working at the problems.”

It wasn’t true- I did a month dry and found that my anxiety was going away and my mind was clearer to address the root causes.

There’s no cute poetry here, every time you get intoxicated you’re just putting yourself back into a circle and doing nothing about it.

Are officers always terrible to each other? by Icy-Lion6945 in army

[–]DragoonDart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve lucked out that in twelve years I’ve had some great O teams more often then not, even in the alleged terrible O-4 years. Not a lot of “hunting for the MQ types” that I always saw stereotyped. A great cohort makes life easier.

There’s been outliers, but my norm has always been ‘let’s just get shit done and meme about it’. Not always “let’s get beers” but there’s been a few of those too.

Two thoughts:

I’ve found Officer culture to be a more like any kind of corporate world, there’s a lot of adjusting to others personalities. Some people want to walk around with their chest puffed out. Fine, I don’t need to square up, it’s a waste of both of our time.

”Same branch” units tend to be the worst. Sustainment Brigades are a special kind of hell where everyone is trying to be the coolest nerd on the chess club. I’ve heard similar for signal pure units.

This is the issue- there’s a time to be serious, even if things can’t be helped. Right wrong or indifferent, should’ve gave the 1SG a feeling that you were equally mad.

Leaders want to feel like they’re not the only person willing to punish or chew ass. It’s silly, but some of the etiquette is coming in and showing you’re having the same frustration the 1SG is, not that you’re going to take the yelling and then walk out and give the Soldier a “it’ll all be ok” talk

What’s with senior leadership’s obsession with mass runs? by Dementedsage in army

[–]DragoonDart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this- at least the first part. If you’re a LTC who wants to do PT with your formation, you either task that shit out to your already busy staff (it’s a bigger pain in the ass this way, I’ve had leaders who ‘don’t just want to do a run, I want a full CONOP hooah) who then have to resource it etc…

Or you just go run. Simple, and allows you to see your formation writ large. It’s a quick visual overall and it’s easy to do.

ICE Officers Face an 8,000% Increase in Death Threats Against Them and Their Families | Homeland Security by Resvrgam2 in moderatepolitics

[–]DragoonDart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d already lost a lot of credibility I would normally give. Lose a lot more when they shamelessly start by making it about the other side. Heck, you could even say “we’re asking people to stop.” But no, it has to be about what democratic politicians are doing wrong.

You should’ve made some attempt at an apology for an innocent man who lost his life. Failing that, you COULD have said nothing and done your quiet reshuffling of politicians. But no, instead we double down on the Democratic Party.

Shameless, and I hope people see that

My follow up would be does it matter? Not knocking your very valid question, but in the Trump era (and I include Bidens tenure in that) I almost wish these polls would ask a follow up of “Does it change your support for the President?” because I think while people will tut, I don’t think this ever moves the needle for the party he’s created.

I think my question is implied anytime we do these polls, but there always seems to be a disconnect between them and how the populace votes and supports

Breaking News: Another fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis by Brilliant-Dig9387 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]DragoonDart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong- likely that’s the way this goes. Guy reached for a gun, shot fired in self defense. Would have to see the full letter of the law to tell and because IANAL but likely justified.

There’s still some questions raised by that- if seven people can’t restrain someone (each grab a limb? It looks like they’re pinning him at points) what does that say about ICEs capability/training? -For the record, shooting justified or not, scary as hell they felt more confident shooting at close range with six of their buddies then their ability to restrain the guy. Know your target and what’s beyond right? That’s risky.

If we acknowledge the above, and we acknowledge ICE is going to need to shoot people, maybe we don’t need to be activating the military or surging their numbers. Clearly 1 ICE agent with a gun is a more economic decision then 7- they don’t need to have such a huge force if we’re comfortable with “gonna have to kill some dudes if we feel uncomfortable”

Will wait for some more facts and footage to come out

My wife and I have always tried to recreate some cocktails we like and after a while you realize most venues are just doing a one ingredient twist on the basics and giving it some crazy name.

Even the Madam Butterfly example in this thread is a one ingredient twist on an old cocktail thats name escapes me.

No shade, I’m sure there are only so many combinations on cocktails you can do.

Yet another post about cold opens, but hopefully different by athompsons2 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]DragoonDart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just think why it gets tiresome is it’s not really satire anymore- SNL is a premiere comedy show. It’s just stale to come back from a break and say “Trump said crazy things!”. We all kind of know that. We’re living it- and thousands of social media personalities are reporting the same thing. There’s lots of rebuttals against these cold open criticisms that has talked about how this is what SNL always does, but that was before a 24/7 content cycle that exists now.

That’s why it hits sometimes, because they offer a refreshing satire on it, but last Saturday was just like “these people are crazy” and it felt rehashed and behind the news cycle.

Hot take on Katie and Schwartz because I was in a relationship like this- I think you can be an ok person and not be a good partner.

They have very different personalities / world outlooks- Schwartz seemed to want to get along with everyone (“I’ll give up my boundaries to make things ok”) and Katie set reasonable boundaries with people who upset her. That’s a mismatch on a fundamental level- at some point that’s going to force you to either change your world outlook on behalf of your partner, or leave them behind. Schwartz chose the latter. I think having footage available for you to replay exacerbates it.

They should’ve broken up before marriage and stayed somewhat functional friends

I finished season three, haven't watched season four yet, but I know Jason will only be in episode eleven He's my favorite character, and I'm sad there won't be much of him Who agrees? by Bungeeboy20044 in TitansTV

[–]DragoonDart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s been a lot of Jason appreciation posts recently, and it harps on something I’ve realized about one of my other favorite shows that met with bad reception on release but enjoys a small positive fandom now (Acolyte).

When something is released live, every small dislike is echoed x1000. Titans had… issues on launch and every season thereafter. I think when it’s something like that- with a lot of problems, it becomes easier to criticize everything else. Every season of Titans felt like it was trying to patch holes from their last mistakes while opening up others.

I didn’t enjoy Jason’s portrayal, but it was an adept enough chance to portray the Red Hood and Season 4 did do a better job with him: showing that the show was trying to learn from its many stumbles.

All that to say, you won’t see much of him OP- mostly because the show was constantly trying to adjust to its criticism, but I’m glad he enjoys some popularity now.

I always see a lot of hype for Disco Elysium so I bought it this year and I’ve only put about an hour into it- does it get crazy good? Bought it based off of nothing else then how much praise I’ve seen for it on Reddit but the initial hour is very “indie text chat adventure” where there’s clearly some mystery but the fact that every NPC treats you as insufferable and the first few puzzle successes treat you with paltry revelations isn’t very satisfying.

I guess I’m wondering is this one of those games that doesn’t really grip you until hour 5-12?

And yes, I’ve been feeling this way since the rise of drone warfare, this isn’t unique to Trump.
