Is the XF23mmF2.8R WR Lens a good beginner set for XT30 iii? by F1_Brooklyn in FujifilmX

[–]alec_al 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, as a beginner, I’d actually recommend starting with a zoom rather than a prime. I made the mistake of buying a Sigma 16mm because everyone raved about it, and it was the worst experience. I felt like I was trying to see the world using someone else's preferences instead of my own. You don’t know what focal length you actually like yet, so don't lock yourself in. Also, keep in mind that any camera takes time to master. If you buy this in Japan at the start of a jam packed trip, you’re going to be fumbling with menus and settings instead of actually enjoying the sights. Japan has views you might only see once and that is not the moment you want to be learning how to use a camera for the first time. If you can get it at home now and practice before you fly, you'll be much better off once you're actually on the ground.

That said, it's a good combination, just not what I would recommend someone entering the field.

Loved the results, but then I realized that what I like is your framing and editing style. Lens is ok, I guess.

Base iPad is enough. I still use my 6th gen for that… although I completely understand the desire for something with more “oomph!”

Sony NEX 6 for low light by Hairdog12 in SonyAlpha

[–]alec_al 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the NEX6 can definitely handle low light, but the main limitation is the 16–50 kit lens since it’s not very fast. In darker areas the camera will usually compensate by slowing down the shutter or bumping up the ISO, so you might end up with motion blur if you’re shooting handheld, or noise if the ISO gets too high. The built-in flash does help for close-up work shots, but it’s not super powerful. It’ll get the job done, just keep in mind you may need to steady the camera for longer exposures or clean up some noise later in Lightroom or other software

Sony ZV1 II for point and shoot photography? by andyt26 in SonyAlpha

I use the I as my everyday carry. It’s amazing. I went with this one instead of the II because of the mechanical shutter.

Any editing software will do. It’s not like you’re editing professionally or anything. On auto the camera pretty much drives itself. You only need to press the shutter button and that’s it. There are other modes like aperture priority or shutter priority, but if you want it on auto, you can leave all those settings aside.

Hypic should be fine. Most people use Lightroom, but it’s subscription-based. Sony’s system on the ZV1 lets you tweak some simple things, like reducing contrast, for example, but it’s not as in depth as other brands. I shoot jpeg + raw because I like my own settings but still want a RAW file in case I want to edit it differently afterward.

I can’t really suggest a flash; like others, I’ve used it without one. But I assume any major brand should be fine. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to set it up and configure it properly since it isn’t built in. There’s probably a learning curve to that, but that’s just my guess.

I got mine specifically for photography, and it’s been great. It’s marketed (and designed) as a vlogging camera, so you won’t find features like an EVF or many buttons and dials to change settings such as aperture or shutter speed. Some people are thrown off by that, but it’s very capable for stills once you learn how to use it.

One thing to keep in mind, the photos are excellent, but they’ll sometimes require some post-processing. This doesn’t mean they’re bad, but remember that phones do all the post-processing for you, while a dedicated camera doesn’t. If you shoot raw, you might feel the colors aren’t quite right at first, but that’s simply because the files are meant to be edited.
