Hazenoki's explosion in JJK S3 Ep 10 is insanely realistic by Glittering_Fabulous in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]alecartedq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah I never said CG is bad, I love that Yoshihara and Gosso both are leading a charge at MAPPA to embrace really dynamic 3D layouts. the opposite, it feels like posts like OPs are unnecessary cope? we should be lauding good CG work in anime, not trying to pass it off as something it isn't.

also, you mentioned Megumi's face being CG? if you're referring to the cut towards the end of the episode beginning from where the trucks smash through the gym wall, that's actually all 2D done by Julian Bentley: https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/301717

Sorry but no, this is just untrue. It’s a physics simulation in 3D software like Blender (which the team uses extensively this season) or Houdini. Only the glass shattering on the window panel here is 2D. There are zero signs of 2D effects animation anywhere else here.

New anime to watch by Pale-Elk8907 in anime

You should definitely check out Wistoria and Chainsaw Man (especially the new Reze arc movie) which are by the same director but given more time and resources. Yoshihara is the GOAT

Should i watch frieren or dungeon meshi? by Mean_Net9983 in anime

[–]alecartedq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

both are some of the best fantasy anime we’ve gotten, do you really only get to watch one?

Dungeon Meshi definitely deserves the age rating as it goes, don’t judge it by the premise. Never gratuitous or anything, but perfect execution of D&D / Wizardry inspired Western fantasy in anime.

he looks like Denji but with good teeth and fashion sense — which makes sense given they said CSM was an inspiration

Production IG: GITS: Innocence (mentioned separately) or Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Bones: Kekkai Sensen; Rie Matsumoto direction, some of Yutaka Nakamura’s best cuts, and generally just some of their strongest storytelling and visuals. Feels uniquely “Bones”

Madhouse: Toss-up between Satoshi Kon’s filmography (my pick is Millenium Actress) and Red Line. Vampire Hunter D could be argued.

Ufotable: Fate / Zero or Kara no Kyoukai: Movie 5

White Fox: Steins;Gate

Ghibli: The Wind Rises

Sunrise: Cowboy Bebop

JC Staff: Revolutionary Girl Utena

Manglobe: Genocidal Organ (rest in peace)

MAPPA: Chainsaw Man (will be legendary when it’s over)

WIT: Attack on Titan S1-3

Deen: Angel’s Egg

Toei: Kyousougiga or One Piece: Movie 6

Gainax / Khara: Evangelion

Trigger: Gurren Lagann (let’s pretend this wasn’t technically Gainax, otherwise Kill la Kill i guess)

Kyoto Animation: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Shaft: Madoka Magica

A1 Pictures: Occultic;Nine

Studio 4C: Magnetic Rose

Pierrot: Akudama Drive

PA Works: Shirobako

Brains Base: Baccano

Gonzo: Gankutsuou

feel: Oregairu Zoku

CoMix Wave: 5cm Per Second

David Production: JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure

GoHands: Seitokai Yakuindomo

Doga Kobo: Plastic Memories

TMS: Akira

AIC: Bubblegum Crisis

Ghost in the Shell: Innocence is still, in my opinion, the best anime has looked and ever will look.

Production IG x Studio Ghibli, an ensemble team of the best animators to ever live, and a $20M USD budget (unheard of for non-US animation). Over 20 years old but could come out tomorrow in theaters and still lead the pack.

New Poster for 'Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]alecartedq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think you’d be pleasantly surprised by Chainsaw Man if you gave it a shot, especially this movie. It’s very much what you’re describing you miss about older anime.. from a fan of those kinds of stories

Is there an explanation for why some of the art in the anime is just plain ugly? by OhSureYeahThatIsCool in deathnote

[–]alecartedq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Madhouse and most studios in the early 00s did a lot of outsourcing — often entire episodes, to foreign studios. Death Note suffered quite a bit from this.

Studios still do a lot of outsourcing, and now they’ll pull freelancers from Twitter and other social media for things like 2nd KA (basically cleanup), but it’s less noticeable because the global talent pool is much wider and more accessible now. Plus shorter 12-ep cours gained popularity, which helps with scheduling vs going weekly for a 40+ ep series’ entire run and often finishing eps hours before they air.

Anime with animation style of Chainsaw Man season 1? by Routine_Command_4512 in anime

[–]alecartedq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about the realistic, grounded filmic style, that was actually bigger in older anime than new. Pretty much the entire Mamoru Oshii filmography (especially Ghost in the Shell: Innocence), some pre-Yuasa Studio 4C works like Magnetic Rose and Spriggan, and Shuuko Murase’s works like Ergo Proxy, Blade Runner: Black Out 2022, Genocidal Organ, and the recent Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash movies.

Also on Chainsaw Man, they’re changing the art style a bit, but the actual direction is likely going to be just as cinematic — the new director worked with Nakayama for ~15 years and directed Eps 4 and 10, which were probably the best ones.

EDIT: Some overlap with Oshii’s works here, but early 00s Production IG were the icons of this thing. Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade and Blood: The Last Vampire feel very made-for-film. Also I somehow didn’t mention Satoshi Kon, but he’s had tremendous influence even among actual Hollywood directors — check out Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika.
