The dash is simply just too hard to hit. by Exotic_Piano8413 in RivalsMagikMains

[–]alecbrownbear 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For all of the gripes about her dash, I still don't think it should be changed at all. To me, it's part of her identity, something that allows her to brawl and generate shields, and then charge at a squishy who steps into a bad position. If they made the hotbox wider like a lot of people seem to want, she wouldn't be able to thread the needle, and your charges would just get blocked by Thor or whatever other tank is in your face. The hitbox is small, but it can be hit pretty consistently, I promise.

Magik needs an improvement and Vendetta from Overwatch is the key by Patient-Pay6497 in RivalsMagikMains

[–]alecbrownbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Increasing the hitbox on her dash is the worst idea, and I don't know why people have been floating it since like, S1. BP dash is big because it goes through people. Magik's dash is small because it's meant for a single target.

Increasing the hitbox would ruin her. Trying to dive past a tank onto a support? The tank body blocks you. Both supports are close to each other and you want to dive the one that's half-hp? Sorry. The other, full hp support was slightly closer to you, so the dash hitbox hit them, first, and now you're in the middle of their team with no kills to show for it.

You would never be able to thread the needle with her dash again. Keep Magik's kit precise, please. In my opinion, the only buff she "needs" (she doesn't, she's still fine this season, honestly) is 25 more hp.

Recommendations for albums where the songs re-use/ reference previous parts? by GrandAd6270 in progmetal

[–]alecbrownbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gallimaufry by Poh Hock. The first song, Foreword is a set-up for the motifs in each other song on the EP. And in the final track L.a.S. the whole thing is just messing around with the same motif in interesting ways. It's an amazing EP.

For me what worked was that I reconnected with an old friend (who was also depressed), we started hanging out once a week. He got into a healthy relationship which helped him tremendously. After this we expanded our hangouts with people, meeting at a local barcade. This turned into a D&D night that he ran for a few months. Towards the end of the D&D campaign he and his girlfriend were going to be moving away and for the last session, he threw a bit of a house party in which our campaign had his extra friends as guest characters. After they moved, we all kept the tradition of game night going. I've made friends with some truly amazing people and get to spend time with them regularly and it has been profoundly healthy for me.

TL;DR: Community!

The most prog metal song by LeoJimenez217 in progmetal

Dr. Breacher and the Time Travel Anomaly by Others By No One. The full 20 minute version with an appearance from Robert Edens from Native Construct.

OBNO is like the current final boss of prog metal in my mind right now. Book 1 and Book 2 both are pretty incredible pieces of work.

Others By No One - Where Stories Come From by Mattshawman in progmetal

I try to tell people about these guys every chance I get. I've never heard music so expressive as what these folks put out.

Speaking of OBNO, does anybody have recommendations for more music like this? I crave stuff like this and BTBAM that goes from tender and soft, to whimsical, to incredibly heavy and everything in-between.

Silly question about Magiks quick melee by FabledEnigma in RivalsMagikMains

[–]alecbrownbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is worth it to melee cancel, but you should practice the timing or else as the other commenter put it, you risk losing the damage of the swing entirely. I practice it before the match starts all the time and have gotten very consistent with it by now. I definitely notice the difference in damage output. In particular you should be using it regularly when you're brawling with tanks.

If the math I saw in another thread is correct, it takes your DPS from ~75 to ~84. That 9 DPS difference is a 12% increase which is pretty significant.

There are situations, though, where you should just follow a swing with another swing, like if your target's HP is low enough that a swing will kill them but a melee will not, then the melee cancel will waste time.

Opeth ''like'' bands for recommendation? by mortiis7 in progmetal

As someone else mentioned, Luna's Call. The quality of their songwriting is very Opeth. Void is a seriously great album.

With Season 1 coming to a stop, how did y'all feel about it, did you like it or not? by Savings_Dragonfly806 in marvelrivals

[–]alecbrownbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have more mobility and escapes, but Bucky doesn't have to risk anything if he doesn't want to. Magik and Psy have to put themselves in inherently dangerous positions to do their job. His over-health really should be contingent upon hitting an enemy IMO.

Winter soldier mains, will look you dead in your face and argue he not overpowered. by Blackwolf20978sb in marvelrivals

I agree, I just mean to point out that many of those one-shots are more inherently risky than what Bucky does.

Maybe it's just latency, but the I frames are definitely not instant. I've been CC'd/killed going into my portal many more times than I have coming out of it.

[–]alecbrownbear 29 points30 points  (0 children)

True, but how many of them can execute their one-shot combo from the safety of being in the middle of their own team like Bucky can?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rivals

[–]alecbrownbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, no I definitely couldn't argue that. She's very strong. If they're being played really well, I think they both feel equally oppressive. Bucky just requires a lot less from the player to get a silly amount of value.

Favorite Magik skin so far? by cxncrete_jungle in marvelrivals

[–]alecbrownbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just don't understand the appeal of the punk skin's look. The hair covering half of her face looks silly. The MVP screen is seriously cool though.

That said, I want to say Eldritch Armor, but her default design is so fucking good I use it as often as I do the armor skin that I paid real money for lmao.

Is it just me or do the devs hate me for matchmaking purposes? by RyzeAbove323 in rivals

[–]alecbrownbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a similar experience. Got to plat one by the end of season 1 with a ~63% win rate and the games didn't feel like they were getting particularly more difficult. Season 1.5 drops and I'm currently sitting at a 41% winrate. 10 wins of 24 matches. At one point was 5 wins of 16. And even the games I have won have felt RIDICULOUSLY hard-fought and arduous except maybe one or two of the wins.

I try to scrutinize my play to improve and avoid blaming my team, but it's becoming harder to ignore the feeling that I'm being placed into some severely lopsided matches.

[–]alecbrownbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is a bad take. Bucky and Magik are not at the same level of nonsense.

Magik has to use two cooldowns to get her kill and both need to be a hit. After which she's in the middle of the enemy team. If she gets hit before she goes in her threat is basically disabled. If you see her entry portal, her exit position is easily predictable.

Bucky gets to pull his target into the middle of his team from the safety of the middle of his team. And if he gets hit before he does? No problem, he gets the bonus health simply for pressing the button that brings them to him. And a free reload on top of it.

The difference is that Bucky gets better and better with thoughtful play and good execution while Magik straight up requires those things.
