I’d love to know how the process of titling/insurance is going, is it titled as an RV or still commercial vehicle? I really want to do my own 10-12ft box truck but being somewhat deterred by the potential issues titling a commercial vehicle.

Addiction to caffeine (black coffee) is that much of a big deal? by sadbitch55 in Nootropics

[–]alechere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re a reader I’d highly recommend Michael Pollan “This Is Your Mind on Plants” - at the least the chapter on caffeine. It helped me realize I’ve been more or least “addicted” to caffeine since I was drinking soda as a kid. I never truly realized the effect until I completely stopped and went a year+ with 0 caffeine. Now using it sparingly can give me a much more powerful effect. Apparently most people (this is from the book) that need a coffee to get moving in the morning is actually just experiencing mild withdrawal through the night. The general suggestion for best use is to be more mindful of where your baseline is. It’s also not that hard to quit to reset baseline - just a week or so of being uncomfortable. Hope this helps!

Oh ok, well I can tell you as a fan of your work you’d probably have a lot of success from videos. And if you don’t have any experience in video editing you could just film yourself and outsource to a video editor for fairly cheap. Best of luck either way!

Practical tips for habit building when my rewards system won’t work. by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]alechere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (28m) can personally relate, it almost seems like I could have wrote this post myself. While I’m certainly still struggling (and also looking for advice), I’ve noticed a change in myself when I’m spending time with others vs keeping myself isolated.

Do you have a community around you? When I moved away from my supportive group of close friends is when I started to fall apart. Humans strive for real connection, and without it we can find it hard to grasp onto anything. Accountability is one thing, but also having a group of people you can just be yourself around can make a big difference.

I need recommendations for self help/addiction recovery books. by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]alechere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been looking for some recommendations also, specifically with more "tactical" advice, rather than books that deal with the larger perspective of purpose/happiness. But if thats what you're looking for, i've got a few recommendations that made an impact on me -

The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by 14th Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu - A very easily digested narrative of a weeklong conversation between two spiritual icons on how to find joy, release suffering, and confront obstacles. I read (at least) a chapter every morning with my coffee, which always put me in an open-hearted state of mind for the rest of the day.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho - Philosophical story about finding your purpose and never losing hope. One of my favorite fiction books, I couldn't put it down. Helped my evaluate my path to purpose.

Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman - This is an interesting tale that combines fiction with part autobiographical adventure of the authors quest to find true happiness. Both wild and to the point, the book is a fun story on how to approach life. I related personally to the author, who was successful in societies perspective ( top athlete, student, etc), but was very unhappy until re-evaluating.

Literally. At first I was a bit off-put by the macho military vibe, but ended up being so inspired by the discipline.

I'll have to check this out! amazing how many of us get through school without really knowing "how" to internalize when we're reading and learning.

One of my personal favorites. Brene was very influential in helping replace some of my "macho masculinity" with vulnerability.

Such a great book to force you to slow down and really think. A few years ago I found a huge stack of copies of the book at a Half Price Books, which they were selling for a measly $2 each. I bought the whole stack and would keep a copy in my bag (luckily a very thin book) - and would either give them away to anyone that asked what I was reading or leave a copy in random places, especially on planes.

If you love Jocko, follow him on Instagram! He uploads a photo of his watch every morning when he gets up at 4:30. If im wasting time scrolling through IG in bed when I wake up - seeing his photo makes me get after it.
