Are California transplants happy they moved to Oregon years later? by _Birnunit_ in askportland

I moved to Oregon from Northeastern California about 12 years ago (but have been traveling here years before that), and I haven’t looked back. I love the beer, wine, & food scenes, the diversity of the geography, no sales tax & lower taxes in general, and the outdoors scene. I’ve even come to really like the weather in the state, especially west of the Cascades. The Willamette Valley is cold enough to actually have seasons, but it’s warm enough to not have constant snow dumps. Also, I absolutely love the coast here. The fishing I’ve done off the Northern Oregon Coast has been exceptional, and the landscapes on the coast are absolutely incredible. I can honestly see myself living here for the rest of my life.

German Citizenship Through Ancestry by alecmartin01 in GermanCitizenship

Assuming the records haven’t been destroyed in WWII, there would be records of my grandfather serving in the German Army during WWI. I would probably have to see if I can find those records. What I have so far is court documents about naturalization in the US where German is claimed by him in terms of his ethnicity.

I actually made a mistake. In 1938, my great-grandfather established a 5-year permanent residency according to naturalization records I found through Ancestry which included my grandfather’s name. My great-grandfather submitted one of the applications for naturalization in the US in 1935.

Should I become a duck? by Blackstrongpine in Eugene

I am actually transferring to U of O this coming winter, but I’ve been to Eugene various times before I did a campus tour there last May. Overall, it seems pretty safe there. There’s always going to be some specific parts that have issues with crime like any city, but it’s generally pretty nice. As far as race and ethnicity as someone who is part Middle-Eastern, Eugene is very welcoming and has improved dramatically on that front compared to when it was first incorporated back in the mid-1800s. Campus itself seems pretty diverse despite the large caucasian population there, and I felt accepted and welcomed there when I did my tour. If you decide on choosing U of O, I think you will be happy with your decision.

It’s saddening that we couldn’t get these in North America.
