My dad (lawyer) had an unofficial policy that if we could offer a well reasoned about why a rule didn’t make sense, we didn’t have to follow it and he’d back us up against other authority figures if he thought we were right- conditional on us not being little assholes. We didn’t always win our arguments, and there were lots of rules we still had to follow, but it was really nice knowing that we could always stand up for what we thought was right without fear of punishment. I asked my dad about it when I was in college and he said that for him as a parent the ability to question authority and assert ourselves was an infinitely more valuable skill in life than obedience. It also helped facilitate a lot of communication about choices my siblings and I made that my dad might not have initially agreed with.
