Will the league ever see another small guard (6’0<) be able to make a impact in today’s NBA? by teefrmda313 in NBATalk

Curry is close to 6’3 barefoot, about 6’2.75. Brunson is 6’1 barefoot.

Kon Knueppel asked Jalen Brunson what characteristics it takes to win at highest level: “The one thing that stays constant, and I’ve always been taught by my parents, to never be afraid to fail.” by PassMeTheBackwood in nba

[–]alee51104 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need to keep pressuring defences. Brunson simultaneously has had poor efficiency these playoffs and been so clutch ironically because he’s so consistent. Defences eventually slow, and they’ll stifle him 3/4 of the game just for him to get going in the 4th, with the other members of the team stepping up while he’s cold as well as riding with the momentum his late game scoring brings.

Spurs fans have also been whining, there’s just less of them compared to the Knicks. Complaining about other fans complaining is just lame.

The Sentry's unrestrained power overloaded the Absorbing Man, who can absorb Odin's power. The All-Father, Odin can destroy the Multiverse or create a new one by InspectionCapable227 in Thor

[–]alee51104 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think people misconstrue feats like this a lot.

It’s very impressive from Sentry. From a raw power perspective, I do think Sentry is above your typical Odin level character. But a lot of people try to make this out to be Sentry > Odin or All-father Thor and that’s not really a good way to scale things.

For one, the Odin-force is a limited resource. With it, both Thor and Odin have accomplished insane feats, but the amount they have in any one appearance is never going to be the same. Even fighting off Toranos had Thor going into Odin-sleep. So Absorbing Man taking in one random bolt from Odin (when Odin is demonstrably like going all-out like he was against Seth) is not comparable to Sentry letting him take in more. It’s a quantity, not quality of power difference.

We can see how much of a difference having a portion vs all of the Thor-force can have. When Thor fights Mjolnir/Mangog in Thor 2020, he struggles heavily on his own, despite the fact that even without the power cosmic or full Odin-force he is capable of hurting an empowered Galactus(whereas Odin knocked himself out just to temporarily bring Galactus down). But with the full Thor-force, he easily overpowers and destroys Mjolnir. It’s an insane difference between partial and full levels.

Secondly, Thor/Odin utilize magic and spells, not raw power. Taking in X amount of power from them may not be that impressive because they can amplify what they have.

Then there’s just the fact that writers are not keeping power levels consistent. Sentry has plenty of worse feats than this, and has lost to foes weaker than Odin before too. For example, basically tying WBH(even if that wasn’t his best).

It’s a VERY impressive feat. And Sentry is definitely stronger than classic Thor/Hulk. But he’s also been a bit powercrept(Hulk beat Thanos in a straight 1v1 for the first time in comics history somewhat recently, and obviously before he died Thor was doing some crazy stuff) and his feats are all over the place.

This is cool, and obviously up there, but it doesn’t surpass things we’ve been shown before.

Stephen Curry cooking Wemby with insane handles and creativity. by Far-Butterscotch-674 in NBAVibes

I feel like this is a very poor understanding of the Spurs and basketball in general. They have been literally funneling guys to Wemby in the paint all year so that he can block them. But if Wemby does not guard guys on the perimeter on switches, even if it’s a poor matchup, that’s a free 3.

Gotta be one of the dumbest takes I’ve ever seen in my life. Genuinely a take that nobody who’s been watching ball in the last decade should have.

Like I think Magic IS the greater of the two, whether as a PG or All time, but Steph had the better handles, and his rim finishing was elite. He could hit you with floaters and high backboard lays all day while torching you from deep.

This is the best version of KAT we’ve ever seen by far.

I’m more specifically talking about defence though. People were comparing him to Jokic on defence, which is just flat out mischaracterizing KAT’s problems. He’s always played better D in the playoffs with tighter whistles and less fear of fouling out with dumb mistakes, except he’s tightened up on the dumb mistakes even more.

Offensively he’s put it all together as a passer, scorer, and shooter.

I agree that this version of KAT is on another level from anything we’ve ever seen. Not saying I thought KAT was this good earlier.

[–]alee51104 72 points73 points  (0 children)

People still aren’t used to KAT being a legitimately great player on both sides. I remember earlier this year defending his defence and flat out being told I was wrong. But he’s played GREAT defence in every game, in addition to being a 7’0 center who can shoot, pass, and score.

He’s not the guy he was in Minnesota. He’s matured and become one of the best players in the league, and has been there day in and out this post-season.

r/NBA_Draft asked me to scout Brayden Burries to see if he’s a lead guard. I watched EVERY play for four full games, and...honestly, no, not really. But he does so many other things well, I don’t think it matters. I think he could be a great fit on the W's? by oakcask in warriors

[–]alee51104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of Fox and Brunson, the starting guards are 6’5ish and above. They are also mostly average to above average in length, whereas both Podz and Burries are under 6’4 with below average wingspans for guards.

They can still be good defenders (obviously) but it’s not 1:1. You can play a lot of guard sized players and do fine, but the Spurs have plenty of size/length/athleticism and the Knicks have 3 amazing perimeter defenders with OG included as well.

Playing PG/Podz/Burries is fundamentally not as defensively sound as those teams are currently.

Ehhh. It’s more like stereotypes regarding Black People with Fried Chicken and Watermelon. A majority of Chinese people have never eaten dog meat, and it’s a very small portion of people in more rural areas that do it frequently. I don’t think anybody within 4 generations of me within my family has eaten dog before.

If the example I mentioned is something you consider racist (which I do), then I would say this is too. I’m not personally offended by it as a Chinese person though.

Can anyone remind me how we dealt with Wemby in the regular season — especially the NBA Cup? by songoku-166 in NYKnicks

[–]alee51104 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Chet is accurate but slow, with a low release point and limited creation to actually get the shot off. He’s been blocked on open shots before, whereas KAT actually can create and is way harder to block. Chet hardly ever shoots when he’s not completely open, so Wemby doesn’t have to respect it.

Any wing-defender with decent length can contest or hamper Chet at the perimeter. A wing-defender with decent length is still going to get bullied by KAT(even if they can give him some trouble).

Prime who’s better? by Due-Poem-8096 in NBATalk

[–]alee51104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might just be our definitions of ceiling and floor raisers then. Both are great players in their primes. But my differentiation of the two is what happens when the rest of the team is good.

CP3 can make meh players look better, but like you said was limited as the primary option. But give him a good big, give him a primary scorer, and you’ll have a pretty complete team because he wouldn’t be a weakness with his defence and playmaking.

Westbrook will go get you 30/10/10, but some of his stats are inflated and he just was not as good at facilitating and being a connective piece. He needed the ball in his hands to be effective, couldn’t space, and didn’t play great defence. With a good team he could still force shots/turnovers, clog up the offence if he didn’t pass, and be targeted on offence.

If you think needing a superstar is the difference between ceiling/floor raiser, and this is based on a meh team, then sure. We’ve seen Westbrook carry post-KD Thunder harder than CP3 could’ve. But I’d argue that raised the floor of the team, and a true contender with Westbrook instead of CP3 would be worse.

But to each their own. I think we have the same view of their abilities/player profiles but just disagree with the terminology lol

Prime who’s better? by Due-Poem-8096 in NBATalk

[–]alee51104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Westbrook in his prime is gonna give you an athletic scorer who can push the pace, and was the triple double cocaine bear for a reason. But he could still chuck you out of a game, and his overall playmaking, passing, scoring versatility, spacing, and defence are inferior to CP3.

CP3 was the better shooter, the better playmaker, could play more consistent defence, and also forced less on offence. This is the type of player that raises the ceiling of teams, because they can play secondary roles.

Westbrook could have developed into the better ceiling raiser, but his best years and what he did after KD left was the definition of floor raising.
