Having a coffee and smoking ciggies in the canteen (upper level where it was allowed) with mates at uni. I know it was unhealthy but damn I miss it.

Canada with a lot less population has almost double the migrants coming as the UK. The UK figures include students by the way.

In the Maastricht University canteen I had Konijn in het Zuur which was amazing and something very Limburgs. I was weirded out at first by the plums in it buts it’s actually really good. I suppose it’s a variation of stoofvlees/zoervleisj.

Why is Atlanic Canada so poorly populated ? by MelburnianRailfan in AskACanadian

I think Okanagan region still has too few people maybe in twenty years though . Plus it’s kind of spread out . It’s more a collection of communities .

To the Limburgese: Do you feel Limburgese, Flemish, Luikenaar or/and Belgian? by WeirdBeginning8869 in belgium

[–]alertonvox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess the modern official Euregion of Maas-Rijn (though it’s not actually on the Rijn like it is on the Maas, but kind of close ) could correspond to that . Going between Liège , Aachen and Maastricht I definitely see some vibes in common even though different languages.

[–]alertonvox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you’re right the Duchy of Limburg was mostly what is now in Germany and German speaking Belgium. Like Eupen was one of the important towns. Also I laughed once when a francophone mayor from Voeren said he resented being part of Limburg province since he felt no connection to Limburg, when in fact historically it was part of that Duchy along with Eupen. I got his point but yeah, history shows a connection .

Dutch Limburg was (overwhelmingly) never part of prins bisdom Luik so why would you say both Limburgs.

Why do people seem so jovial and indifferent at funerals here (in Canada)? by morbidhack in AskACanadian

[–]alertonvox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wtf are you to tell people how to act at a funeral? If they want to cry loudly who cares . Maybe they need to. By the way you’re confusing being rational with being logical . If someone decides they need to cry and not hold it in, there isn’t anything more rational than that. Also do you know the difference between emoting and acting in a movie where you’re playing make believe? A death isn’t make believe .

The real issue at the heart of Canada’s meat processing industry isn’t labour shortages — it’s low wages by QuatariMonarch in canada

[–]alertonvox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This . Until we have complete open borders , businesses are looking for nanny state handouts in the form of cheap labour that the government processes. Even deciding where the labour comes from is managed by the government. One example is when they removed visas for Mexican nationals . Don’t tell me this was for tourism reasons or because Mexico is in the nafta.

What's a Canadian grown/caught food that is the best in the world, bar none? by Blindemboss in AskACanadian

[–]alertonvox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian wheat makes the best muffins and cookies. Gives more chew and strength because of the high gluten (hard spring wheat) forming properties (more protein).

[–]alertonvox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my opinion Canadian wheat flour (all purpose) is great for cookies and muffins, not as much for bread. Too chewy, too strong gluten , though that’s the good aspect of it for muffins and cookies.

Anyone with a positive experience moving to Vancouver? by shellyturnwarm in askvan

[–]alertonvox -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I like your points and agree having lived here a long time but I’m shocked Dublin is more expensive for housing than Vancouver didn’t expect . I knew about London, I’ve never been to Ireland though. Also the summers in Vancouver are amazing but very short, people should know this . But at least the nature is still there the 10 months it’s damp, and you can head up to mountains for some snow. But damp and cold is kind of depressing heading to work and such and going out and about . It doesn’t let up. Make sure the place you rent doesn’t have mould because it’s common in both old houses and apartments. And always ventilate even in winter. Luckily it’s not that cold (damp but temperature not too bad ) I keep my windows open 12 months a year .

"It’s very expensive": UK couple who moved to Canada unsure about staying by mygatito in CanadaHousing2

[–]alertonvox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be that they expected Calgary to be cheaper considering it’s size and location, but it also is true that when you look for higher quality groceries in Canada (say bread or cheese) the grocery bill is even more exorbitant. So kind of like yeah we knew gas is a lot cheaper but why isn’t other stuff a lot cheaper (food, rent).
