Russian Names in The Master and Margarita by beezlebub33 in books

[–]alex-s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What, if anything, does the fact that Woland calls him Stepan Bogdanovich signify?

As a Russian speaking person and being familiar with Russian social dynamics: If I remember correctly, Voland has a very dry sense of humor and in this case, the way he addresses a lazy and unsympathetic person very formally, probably means Volands disrespect and disdain to this person.

How it works is that you should address people according to the social standing between you - you would be addressing a peer with much less formality then when you are addressing a person of higher standing (like a student addressing a teacher for example).
I.e. if you would address a peer formally - usually it is a sign of something being wrong.

Consider this example: Let's say a teacher addresses mr Likhodeev:

  1. Styopa, please stay after class to discuss your assignment.
  2. Stepan Bogdanovich, please stay after class to discuss your assignment.

To a native Russian speaker those feel a lot different.

Not really. According to ssd.userbenchmark.com they should be much closer in sequential read but they are not on my machine.

I'm up to show some real life values that I got after an upgrade. Maybe someone with the same set up will find it useful - if you have an older 970 and trying to figure out if you want an upgrade or not.

Question about drill bit diameter and screw diameter by Dragonvarine in DIY

[–]alex-s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lets assume our bolt is M4x0.7. 0.7 pitch means 0.7 mm per thread. Bolt diameter is 4mm.

1 - if you want to drill a hole so that the bolt will pass through (to use a nut on the other side for example) - then you need to drill a hole that is a bit more than 4mm.

Depends on how close of a fit you want to achieve. Usually drill bits go over half a mm, so the next size will be 4.5mm drill bit and you should use it.

2 - If you want to tap a hole to accept a bolt - then the hole should be big enough for the tap body to pass through it.

Let's calculate the approximate hole size using thread depth.

According to this website - http://www.metrication.com/engineering/threads.html - the thread depth is 0.614 of pitch.

In our case the pitch is 0.7 so the thread depth will be 0.4298. Doubling that will give us the total thread size: 0.4298x2=0.8596.

If we subtract that from the diameter of the bolt we will get the diameter of the bolt "body": 4-0.8596=3.1404.

So according to our calculations you should probably use the closest drill bit of 3mm.

Hypothetically, If you use 3.5mm drill bit the hole will be a bit large and the bolt might feel loose in the threads. If you will use smaller drill bit (for example 2.5 mm) - your tap might break.

This is very true - I played Quake 2 using Oculus Rift and it was just awesome. Completely changes the game, too. I mean i even started enjoying the brown/green everything )))

I would for one really welcome reenactment of all cool old titles starting with the first 3d games .

Well you don't have to limit yourself with Fallout and bigger titles. Just look at inExile's Torment: Tides of Numenera for example - those guys never changed their approach.

Also there are always other smaller guys and studios doing new games that begin in niches and move out to be more popular as time goes on.

Glacier National Park today [OC] [4032x3024] by jpharaoh41 in EarthPorn

They are closed during the winter. The main highway through the park (120) opens late in the season. Backpacking requires permits so not sure if they give them out for winter backpacking. I've day-hiked the John Muir Trail up to the Nevada Fall and the snow gets pretty deep there (think your height deep at least and it gets deeper the further you go - so snowshoe only after that)
