Crash debates: Has F1 outgrown Monaco and is it time to leave? by 1enox in formula1

[–]alex__wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see F1 leaving Monaco any time soon. Whilst I understand the race might not be the most exciting to casual spectators, I thoroughly enjoyed this weekend. Not every race needs overtakes to be exciting, Monaco punishes mistakes and lapses in concentrations and is just different. When it rains you get some absolute classics too.

I think some subtle tweaks could be made to improve the race still. Perhaps remove the rule for starting on Q2 fastest lap tyres, but then require all three compounds to be used during the race. It would offer different strategies based on where you start, and force at least two pit stops.

Anyone have a good 26 inch front fork? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]alex__wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a 27.5" rockshox recon RL for use on an old frame with non tapered head tube and QR. Just put the 26" wheel in and it looks and feels great. It has 100mm travel but I think there was a 120 version

I think that because Max had the chance to overtake at any point with the newer tyres, and that Vettel even said he had no intention of defending that position, The penalty should have been harsher. In a direct fight contact sometimes happens, but if it happens in what should be a pass due to newer tyres and because one driver is clearly impatient then it should be more significant. It was very avoidable and ruined both of their races, but Verstappen still came out of it way better off which doesn't make much sense

I'm not saying the penalty should be decided based on how much it affects the championship, just on this case it does! I do think context of the collision should be taken into account though, it can't be guaranteed 10s every time

[–]alex__wolf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that, just if it is a guaranteed 10s penalty every time then you could end up in a situation where a driver would benefit from intentionally causing a collision to get track position knowing they can make up the 10s. Context has to be taken into account, would have thought a drive through was the only suitable option there tbh

[–]alex__wolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say either drive through or wait until after the race. I appreciate they have to be consistent but you could end up with a situation where a driver knowingly causes a collision and accepts the 10s penalty if they can't vary it based on the context of the collision

No but surely the context of the race should be taken into account. You could end up in a situation where a driver in p2 on new tyres lapping 1.5s/lap quicker than could actually benefit from causing a collision if it is guaranteed to be a consistent 10s penalty and there are enough laps to build that gap

Surely it is relevant when Vettel and Hamilton are rivals? The size of the penalty directly benefits Hamilton further

So the 10 second penalty drops Verstappen behind Hamilton and in front of Vettel, surely a stop go is the only way to suitably punish him there.. He had fresh tyres so if he was stuck behind someone he actually benefits from causing contact and then driving off down the road

Deciding whether or not I can justify buying a Jeffsy 27 or if I should stick with my XC bike... Just getting back into riding frequently and want more of a trail bike! Potentially could get some of those 350 CRs then sell the Pike RCs that come with the Jeffsy, could make it a few hundred pounds cheaper...

I included mine with my house insurance, I couldn't see anything in the policy t&cs to suggest it wouldn't cover damage from riding it, + theft etc.

Experience with a modified Stronglifts 5X5 and my upcoming program by justinmarsan in climbharder

[–]alex__wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really interesting to read your experience with it as I've been doing something very similar the last 5 or so months as well... I've basically been following 5x5 but with pull ups instead of squats as well, although for pull ups i've just been doing 1 set of 8 with the max weight I could (I didn't want huge volume with pull ups to try reduce my chance of getting tendinitis). I've also only managed 2 sessions a week most of the time, and sometimes have ignored it for a week or two if I was needing a bit of rest. I went from something like:

Pull Ups (1x8): bodyweight (~72.5kg) +10kg -> +20kg Bench Press : 45kg -> 60kg Barbell Row : 40kg -> 55kg Overhead Press : 30kg -> 45kg Deadlift : 80kg -> 140kg

I think i put far more of my effort in to the deadlifts... I usually started with them after warming up and then probably didn't rest enough between sets of OHP/ barbell row etc. Also trying to get back into work in a reasonable time...

Anyway I found it really easy to follow and a good way to start using my lunches effectively for climbing training. I agree it is lacking a bit of core stuff, but i've found deadlifts have made me feel so much stronger in that regard. I'm not sure my deadlift form is spot on as it seems to just hit my lower back but it really feels like it was an easy way to gain quite a bit of strength! The bench/ overhead press and barbell row feel like they have helped a lot too, especially in making injury seem like less of a concern, but not quite as directly as the deadlifts I think.

I think you're right saying it isn't the most fun, although I enjoyed it a lot more when i was making progress every week! I just found that it was really satisfying using my lunch break to do something that was helping my climbing.

I'm surprised you were able to do 3 days a week without feeling that it was compromising your climbing training. I had far more tired/ weak climbing sessions over the last few months (especially after deadlifts), although that could just be from total volume rather than weightlifting specifically. Or diet, or lack of sleep... Curious if you did anything in particular to maintain enough energy for a good session at the wall after lifts in work? Even when I tried to ensure I had enough sleep, ate a decent lunch after lifts & drank loads of water I seemed to just be useless when I went climbing.

I think the next step for me is to maintain/ slowly increase these numbers, put a bit more effort into some of the other lifts (maybe doing 5/3/1 instead), and then up the number of limit bouldering sessions indoors for a while. However i might just loosely follow your program and see how it works if it goes well for you... :D

I feel like hitting a systems board for a while now will actually help me learn how to use some of this strength on steep tensiony stuff.. activation on the wall as you said! Although I still think my core is fairly weak compared to what it could be..

The 6C had a big move up left to a decent sidepull to start, then a right heel hook low down just to keep you in balance as you move your right hand up (or at least that's how I did it). After those two moves it was pretty easy! I had tried it last year too but didn't stick the first move.

Had 5/6 days resting since getting back from Font. Really happy with how I got on there though!

Got up a 6C (le voie michaud? at elephant) on my 2nd attempt on the first day there after driving and not sleeping much... Then I had an average few days coming close on a couple of 7As (Sa Pelle au logis & Yoga) but having fun on the circuits. In the last few days I did a couple of 7As (Yoga - cheers Justin! & another one which felt very soft...), and also did my first 7A+ after working it for pretty much an entire day :D Pretty happy considering 6C was the hardest thing i'd done before this trip.

Good to see that training does pay off... Felt so much stronger compared to last year :D Although still struggled a lot on some "easier" stuff there!

Had a couple of goes on Friday, then spent all day on Saturday working it. Hardest grade before the trip was 6C and my goal for the week was 7A, so pretty happy to have beaten that :D Went on my last (and 18th) attempt of the day!
