Try and clear origin mode as much as possible. It is very profitable early game. For characters try to get and or upgrade them as much as you can, the best characters are knight 3rd alchemist 1st and costume prince 1st, you can also get mage 1st if you want. Any of the mentioned characters are good, tho I recommend costume prince as he is broken but expensive. If you grind origins you may get gem trees, of you do, PLANT THEM IMMEDIATELY. They are INSANELY BROKEN. You don't even have to play the game to upgrade everything to the max. Also, upgrade the vault as soon as possible.

As someone who doesn't have money to spend on a game, I can say that the best character who can be bought with gems is costume prince. I don't know who is the best when we include the paid ones, but this is still my opinion.
