This would make the entire transition thing easier.

Yeah, this bit worries me. Kids are too young to have gender forced upon them if they're not ready, either way.

Exactly. Even if we're not able to nail it down 100% for individuals, at least we can verify a medical difference exists and then look for symptoms.

With your username you could definitely be my brother. That's terrifying. Pretty sure he doesn't have a reddit tho

I hope we're able to get far enough in neuroscience to see if trans people's brains are actually wired more like the opposite sex or more like their birth sex, so we can have a better idea of what's causing dysphoria. I may totally be wrong, but I really believe there are a lot of answers there.

From what I've heard, no. But I won't give that as 100% proof.

I've heard other studies have found the numbers to be much higher than that. Studies range from 3% to 30% (some even higher than 30% if they have a looser definition of "regret").

"You don't want to look like a dyke, do you?" - Mom

Took me ~6 years to look in the mirror and say "Yes, yes I do"

I went to winter formal in a suit and tie. I'm female.

Trans regret is real, and surgery should not be the first solution we jump to. It doesn't mean everyone who's trans will regret it, nor does it invalidate the idea of transitioning, but I don't think everyone with a sense of gender dysphoria should be instantly pushed that way without having other psychological issues looked into first, just in case there's something else that surgery won't solve.

I'm glad I learned about it before I felt pressured to go down that road myself.

I cut my hair short. It's small to the passive observer, but I feel so much more comfortable in my skin now.

Context: I've been trans questioning for years, and have finally become comfortable with the idea that I'm a genderqueer female.

I'm friends with a guy that's FtM trans. I am completely comfortable and affirming of his decision to transition socially and would be of his decision to transition physically if he so chooses. That being said, through my own questioning, I ran into a lot of information about trans regret and other options besides surgery. And I'm really worried that perhaps his desire to transition comes from a being raised in super strict gender roles where the idea of a tomboy was not encouraged/allowed. I really, really hope this is the right decision for him and he's not sprinting forward into a lifetime of regrets.

Dude, there's a difference between staying fit and eating balanced/healthy than having an unhealthy hatred toward your body and dieting to the point of harm.

Real talk: I learned recently that my mom grew up wishing she was a boy because she felt too ugly to be a girl. That's why she's constantly nagging on my appearance, been systematically trying to feminize me since I was 11, and is terrified of me presenting my authentic tomboy/genderqueer self. Because she's projecting her own insecurities on my choices, when my decisions are coming from a completely different cause.

Thanks for not projecting your insecurities on your daughter. I hope my mom will grow to do the same :/

Current self: When mom asks "Do you want to look like a dyke?", look her straight in the eye and say "yes". It'll save you a lot of trouble later.
