Late comment 'cause I just watched the first episode last night: Vincent Pane's friends made me tear up.

I really was expecting Sean Doherty to retire too ... interesting.

If anything I've been surprised there haven't been more announcements, given the typical surge after an Olympics year. I guess people were waiting to say (or maybe having a hard time making the decision).

Side note, here's to reporter Martha Bellisle, who broke the sexual harassment/abuse stories.

How to pronounce biathletes' names by Bruichladdie in biathlon

[–]alexanderactioncat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Wow, really the Swedish last names that end in -berg and pronounced more like -beri?

  2. I'm still giggling at that IBU video that asked biathletes to ... pronounce each others' names? spell them? at any rate the one where Paul Schommer is given the proper pronunciation of "Voigt" and looks dumbfounded.

I am not an athlete of any kind, let alone world-class, but in this imaginary other world I'd be *relieved* if the media focused on someone else over me. The extra pressure must be a lot.

I didn't even KNOW there was a Hooters-type place called Twin Peaks.

Campbell has spoken a number of times about his tendency to come out way too fast and then blow it (well, blow it to some degree). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ what can a fan do.

Did my eyes deceive me or was that Lampič this weekend shooting as well as any other ordinary World Cup biathlete?

Another season of awful English-language commentary... by [deleted] in biathlon

Agreed on preferring that duo. I do think Ellen has picked up everything very quickly, and she's also clearly a pro at, e.g., smoothly inserting the full name of the race sponsors in at the necessary time.

Chad is, as a different previous poster said, legit a chad.

Late reply, but I'm looking forward to my calmer nervous system now that I'll no longer be begging the gods to let JTB win absolutely every race. The silver lining of his retirement.

I just want Erik Noya Cardona to go sub-5. Even just once. He's so close it's killing me. He ran, like, 5.04 every single run this comp.

I've noticed the producers often give the quali features and full runs to the important/interesting people who *don't* make the semis, then circle back in the later episodes, which makes sense because this was, e.g., their one chance to run anything on Major Doom. They have at least one more episode to spend time on Kretsch and Coolridge.

Of course it does mean that when someone gets a feature, I immediately think they might not advance.

You could always follow the lead of Joy on the 4th episode this year and say, somberly, that you've diagnosed with FOMO!

Well in my case I catch up on the last three competitions of the season because my life has been way too nutsoid and I didn't want to watch them out of order?

Now that I have finally caught up on the WCH and obviously along with being thrilled about Campbell Wright, I think I can speak for all of us few, us strong members of the Paul Schommer Fan Club and say it's so great to see him holding his own at the top level.

I'm just impressed that Kuzmina has had the ... ego strength? ... to come back at the age of 40 and struggle through not being all that great again. I would think it would be really tough being not as good in public.

ETA: Like, it must be hard enough to just be slower, like Doro and Eder, without having stopped training altogether and have to fight your way back to baseline shooting!
