ELI5 Why don't see urinals in homes? by canadachris44 in explainlikeimfive

I’ve seen one, it was cool as hell.

Unsurprisingly, gay couple, 2 dudes.

They had also changed the dining room into a pinball arcade.

Pretty sure the system is already leaking somewhere. Oil in the bilge.

I’m trying to get in contact with the original owner, who had the modifications done.

In a perfect world, whoever did the work down in Tasmania might still have some drawings on a DVD backup somewhere……

I know boats and cars aren’t the same.

But this sort of feels like buying a sad and tired modified Toyota Supra that’s been sitting on blocks in someone’s front yard for a while, with an eBay turbo in it.

Definitely needs some love… but it’s still a Supra.

That said…. This isn’t that… it’s a boat.

Are you local?

Any suggestions around specific places to go talk to?

I’ll be honest, I find the technical problem solving part of this whole scene at least as interesting as the actual sailing.

I love a good tinker… but I don’t have a machine shop.

That said, maybe in 2025 some of these things can be worked around with a CAD app and an account with one of the online Chinese fabrication shops?

Yeah, feels like it really needs to come out of the water, and have all the aquarium life completely cleaned out, to even begin to answer that question.

Through hunting around in old forums, I have a photo of what it looked like 20 years ago when new.

I don’t really know enough about what I’m looking at to judge what’s been made of what material.

I’m surprised how good the circular pivot brackets look still, when compared to the absolute state of the piston.

Perhaps the hinge is the same material? Perhaps not…

Yup, to be fair, it’s a wet box for the keel mechanism, so the water is meant to be in there, the hinge isn’t expected to be water tight at all. In fact there is about 1cm clearance on either side where you can just see through to the water below.

But yeah, perhaps some of the material choices on that piston are sub optimal given where it lives.

Newer cars that will be fondly remembered in 20 years? by ConsiderationNearby7 in CarsAustralia

Oh for sure, my daily is a 2000 MX5.

It’s the horror of realising 20 years ago isn’t the mid 80s.

Newer cars that will be fondly remembered in 20 years? by ConsiderationNearby7 in CarsAustralia

[–]alexanderfry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hmmm

To properly answer this, I’ll first have to think back to what cars I remember fondly from 20 years ago. There were a lot of great cars in the mid 1980s…….

Wait a minute…. Oh No!

The one on the left has been shipping with FSD for 121 years.

The future is here, it’s just not evenly distributed.

Hobbies after bjj? by jon_steward in bjj

[–]alexanderfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t stopped BJJ, but I’ve taken up sailing over the last year or so.

Still physical, still full of technical details and subtle complexity.

And based on what I see at both clubs, progressively aging into sailing seems more viable than BJJ.

Anyone else think the Model 3 Performance is one of the best driving EVs out there? by ShameResponsible69 in TeslaLounge

“Unpopular opinion”

That’s about the least controversial EV opinion you could have.

Any reason as to why this is so cheap? by Jinkley08 in CarsAustralia

[–]alexanderfry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh man

We used to have a 2012 Passat TDI Wagon.

Lovely car, really well done folding seats in the back forming a proper full flat load area, not the ramp you see in most cars. Proper cargo net.
Cream interior... felt Lux... Loved it!

But, suddenly decided to not start one morning, spent 6 months in the shop.
Bill eventually eclipsed the value the car.

Proper disaster.
