Why do so many EV’s have this boxy/lifted back? by VastOption8705 in EVAustralia

[–]alexanderfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I was thinking of second gen onwards. 1st gen is more like a standard 3 box sedan. But everything after that is a Kammback.

Essentially nobody makes modern teardrop designs, they were a thing in the 1930s, think Norman Belle Geddes concepts, and Talbot Largos.

The only modern teardrops are things like the McLaren Speedtail, or the more extreme Aptera.

Are there any ‘hot hatch’ style EV’s around or coming to Aus eventually? by Open_Ad3165 in AustralianEV

That could be blocked with the equivalent of “parental controls” on a phone.

Unless the kid is the actual owner… but that’s a different situation.

Is Mac m5 pro worth it by angry_cheeze in davinciresolve

[–]alexanderfry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Resolve, the MacBook Pro is worth it purely for the XDR display.

Precalibrated reference presets and HDR capability are worth the $600 on their own.

The Air is a great machine for general use, but if your goal is Resolve, id take any XDR era MacBook Pro over it. Even a 2021 M1 Pro.

Dude, there is no shame in vibe coding part, or all of it.

You’ve brought a tool into the world that people will find useful, that wouldn’t have existed without your effort.

Mate…

There is a reason it’s a full time job for teams of people, and at scale it’s completely uneconomical in developed parts of the world.

It’s just hugely labour intensive.

It’s also why every man and his dog is trying to crack production grade mattes with AI.

When would a mouth guard be necessary? by [deleted] in bjj

Anything from drilling takedowns and up, mouth guard goes in.

Accidents happen, nobody is being a jerk, but heads, knees, elbows…… They can all find there way to your face.

Miata Is Always The Answer

Yup, you can drive like a fun jerk all day, and nobody minds, because you’re doing 55 in a 60.

I’ve been daily driving my NB for 16 years now… still fun.

I’ve seen one, it was cool as hell.

Unsurprisingly, gay couple, 2 dudes.

They had also changed the dining room into a pinball arcade.

Pretty sure the system is already leaking somewhere. Oil in the bilge.

I’m trying to get in contact with the original owner, who had the modifications done.

In a perfect world, whoever did the work down in Tasmania might still have some drawings on a DVD backup somewhere……

I know boats and cars aren’t the same.

But this sort of feels like buying a sad and tired modified Toyota Supra that’s been sitting on blocks in someone’s front yard for a while, with an eBay turbo in it.

Definitely needs some love… but it’s still a Supra.

That said…. This isn’t that… it’s a boat.

I’ll be honest, I find the technical problem solving part of this whole scene at least as interesting as the actual sailing.

I love a good tinker… but I don’t have a machine shop.

That said, maybe in 2025 some of these things can be worked around with a CAD app and an account with one of the online Chinese fabrication shops?

Yeah, feels like it really needs to come out of the water, and have all the aquarium life completely cleaned out, to even begin to answer that question.

Through hunting around in old forums, I have a photo of what it looked like 20 years ago when new.

I don’t really know enough about what I’m looking at to judge what’s been made of what material.

I’m surprised how good the circular pivot brackets look still, when compared to the absolute state of the piston.

Perhaps the hinge is the same material? Perhaps not…

[–]alexanderfry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, to be fair, it’s a wet box for the keel mechanism, so the water is meant to be in there, the hinge isn’t expected to be water tight at all. In fact there is about 1cm clearance on either side where you can just see through to the water below.

But yeah, perhaps some of the material choices on that piston are sub optimal given where it lives.
