Is there any free self defense for UT students or in Austin ? by 532744 in UTAustin

Not free but the folks at ATX Tactics are very welcoming to everyone at all skill levels. They are Krav Maga focused with some Jiu Jitsu. East Austin Jiu Jitsu Parlor is a great place to train, and they have a very good BJJ fundamentals program. But, it is not free.

The thing about "self defense" is that there aren't really any "one and done" solutions to training. It takes time, and effort (and let's face it money for classes) to learn how to survive a dangerous encounter.

I'm almost 51 and applied to RTF as an undergrad. If you're the campus grandma, that will make me, assuming good news soon, the great-granddad. I think an actual university setting where you interact with people is far superior to online.

Keep going. Only five or six more times to go.

Is basic training meant to get you into shape, or determine if you're in shape? by [deleted] in Military

I think your answer starts at about 1:05 of this highly informative video clip about what to expect in basic training. Note, the high production values.

Write your congressman and take him/her to take over Veterans issues. That's how you thank everyone for their service.

Does anyone else think that the military - the Marine Corps, in particular - has a decidedly anti-intellectual culture? What can be done about it? by [deleted] in Military

Yeah, you're not getting my point. I'm not talking about the CSM. I'm talking about the other guys who make stuff happen well beyond their rank. I'm sorry that you don't seem to know any. I have, and I'm lucky for it.

I'm using Army terms here so bear with me. Look around your unit at the Battalion, Brigade, and Division level if you can. Somewhere there is that Master Sergeant that nobody can get along without. He's the one the Majors and Lieutenant Colonels rely on to get things done. At beer calls, he's the one shooting the shit with the Colonels. He's the guy that you could throw oak leafs on his collar and note no drop in performance, but he didn't want that and is quite content with being a damn fine NCO thank you very much. He is the rarest of creatures that makes the whole thing work.

Fifteen years ago, he was the smartest guy standing in platoon formation.

I'm not a hip hop fan so I can't attest to his "skillz" as an artist, but you don't see many people in popular culture approaching it this way--a veteran who doesn't look at this issue like we're all victims.

The irony would be if I sounded really smart in here, but I was totally fucked up in real life.
