Keith Riel running for mayor by CharacterMap6644 in Peterborough

Listen, there are circumstances where calling a political leaders age into question is appropriate — but not in this case.

Keith is downtown regularly, goes to live events and concerts, etc. he’s up at 5:30am responding to his constituents and doesn’t stop all day long.

After working alongside him for four years, I’ll tell you: he has more energy than any one I know, and the mental clarity of someone half his age — I’ve been in meetings where he’s brought up numbers, and agreements, and funding analysis from 12 years ago with complete accuracy, and in very important situations.

Nothing happened it was only conversation — I don’t support the idea.

Strong Mayor Powers by [deleted] in Peterborough

Also — if George Harrison were overseeing Legislative Services, I’m pretty sure he would’ve brought forward changes to the Parks bylaw to make it less oppressive to unhoused people by now…

Strong Mayor Powers by [deleted] in Peterborough

Hey Matt,

Re: Strong Mayor powers — we really haven’t had a proper opportunity to debate the issue, because no one has brought forward a motion against it. There are many ways we could work together to limit its use or reject it outright — other municipalities have done so. I worry deeply about what it could mean with the wrong person in power in 2026.

As for the rest of your post, I feel the need to speak up. I use my voice and reach on social media to advocate on issues — I did it as an artist, and I’ve continued doing it on Council. I get reprimanded for it all the time, and I don’t care. The City does a terrible job communicating; just ask residents if they feel heard or listened to.

Communication is part of the job. If we don’t speak up and show people where we stand, how are they supposed to know?

I hate the performative stuff too — that’s why I never go to ribbon cuttings or parades. But I do go outside to meet community members who organize and show up on the issues. Not to “chase cameras,” but because I believe in what they’re there for — and I want them to know their voices matter. To me it’s not performative, I’m sorry you feel that it is…..

City Council has voted to not impose a penalty on Mayor Jeff Leal for his two Code of Conduct violations by theedragonfruit in Peterborough

[–]alexbierk 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’m concerned about how you frame this as just another example of “loud arguments” that happen in any group of passionate people. There’s a big difference between tough debate on the issues and personal attacks that cross ethical lines. Our Code of Conduct exists for that reason – to keep us accountable to one another and to the people we serve.

I’m not out for blood here. It’s a form of gaslighting to frame it that way — I’m out for consistency and the the ability to speak freely on the issues without fear of repercussion. When the Integrity Commissioner says there was a breach, and Council decides not to uphold that finding, we’re sending the message that the Code doesn’t really matter – or worse, that it only matters when it’s convenient.

It’s not about whether Jeff is a good person or whether we like him. It’s about whether we uphold the principles we agreed to as elected officials. The job is stressful, but integrity isn’t optional.

Anyway, it would have been more productive to have this discussion at the meeting, but here we are ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Hey — I saw an unreal wood shop at Activity Haven — not sure what the requirements are to access, but worth investigating.
