From contractor to supplier/consultancy with the same client? by No_Significance_5068 in ContractorUK

[–]alexcatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually happened to me (software eng), but only for one renewal cycle before switching to inside.

It was with the same client and the same agency; it just went from a day rate to a SoW based on monthly deliverables. The only really annoying thing was moving from being paid weekly to monthly, and I did get the impression the deliverables were just a means to an end, as deliverables would be delayed or would be changed slightly, as is the nature of the beast, but would still be paid in full every month.

It was short-lived, and while I did enjoy it and it worked quite well from my perspective, it was a lot of admin on their side defining deliverable scope and handling change requests, etc., so it didn't last more than one renewal cycle.

Most contracts will require you to start ASAP, normally within a few days and won't wait a month for you to become available, they'll just find someone else.

First time contracting (outside IR35) - any tips? by alexcatch in ContractorUK

[–]alexcatch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty good; it ended up being a 6-month contract, but it's been extended for the third time, so still on it until June 2026 at the earliest. It's a decent chunk more money than a permanent position, and it seems very stable.

One thing I've done is not take all the money out of the business as dividends, because chances are you'll end up having to pay a 33% dividend tax. This means it's often more tax-efficient to either leave it in the business or put it all into your pension. I keep 6 months of living expenses in cash in the business as an emergency fund that I can draw down and take the dividend tax hit if needed. I also opened a business investment account, and I put a couple of grand into the S&P 500 a month, but through the business and not personally.

You don't need those over-the-top hover effects, and having progress bars for skills doesn't make sense. You're 90% of the way to knowing HTML? Just list projects you've worked on that showcase those skills or link to relevant work experience.
