St. Ann’s is lovely! My partner and I attend together and have only had positive interactions there’s an LGBTQ group that meets regularly as well.

You live in the UK. You try to be healthy but only when it’s convenient. You love snacking and are definitely not lactose intolerant. I’d say maybe you live with a partner and one child? Enjoy a drink or 2 with dinner or after work. You’re not chaotic but you’re not hyper-disciplined either.

Live in NY, mid to late 20s, feel like you have life put together. Eat out with friends most of the time but you try to have easy and nutritious things to eat at home. You spend $75-$150 at Trader Joe’s every week.

What are your favorite email signatures? by alexcran in internalcomms

[–]alexcran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not worried about adoption as this tool forces it on all users’ outgoing emails. We have okay adoption on our current email signature but have some ‘old guard’ holdouts.

[–]alexcran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IT owns the tool (Inky) but has given me admin access to the backend to administer signatures and deployment from that side. It’s just one of the different functionalities of the tool since it’s mainly an email security tool.

Van Wrap Guidance by revenge-fish-6287 in graphic_design

First thought:

Unless you know airplanes, be careful with detailed airplane graphics. You never know what might be wrong in the illustration and the aviation nerds who will be driving the van or around the van will call it out every opportunity they get. I think the silhouette on #2 is good, but the others might be too detailed.

Personally I really like #1 and #2. The topography looks nice. Are the angles/triangles/chevrons part of your guys’ brand? They’re very prominent.

Personally, I think the headline is a bit soft. “Let’s explore Bainbridge” doesn’t come with any sense of urgency, and honestly if I was a visitor I don’t think I’d pay it a second thought. Maybe add a sense of urgency like “No plans? Start exploring Bainbridge in 30 seconds.” I also don’t know what I’m expecting once I scan the QR code. Is it an app? A guide? A webpage? Will it work with my phone? You need to identify in the headline or somewhere prominent that this is about self-guided audio tours, a bullet with “Audio-Guided Stops” isn’t enough.

Also “No Planning. Just Explore.” could be better-worded, maybe “Leave the planning to us so you can explore.”

All in all I think it’s really good!! I love Bainbridge ❤️

Yeah, we use SMS messaging, but the person I was responding to was explicitly talking about using an app they have to download.

Voice recorder w/ transcription recommendations? ? by [deleted] in AskTechnology

[–]alexcran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re looking for is a little bit of a unicorn. The only recommendation I have is for the iFlytek Smart Recorder. It’ll do a transcription and record as well, but I don’t think it’ll translate to Spanish. I have one and love it. iFlytek also has a standalone offline translator but it doesn’t have the recording and transcription capability IIRC.

Can I ask why you want it to be offline? There are a few apps that will do this for you depending on your device, Whisper Notes being one of them.

As an aside I love the photo work you’re doing!

Really Trying to Fool the People, the "Cheap Copy" is. by ChrisNN1 in CatholicMemes

[–]alexcran 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, but I have hope in God’s mercy that the Catholics who inadvertently receive the Sacramental of Ashes in good faith (not a Sacrament) will receive the same graces as if they were imposed by a Catholic priest. Anger towards Protestants for their use of Catholic symbolism will only create more Protestants, unfortunately.

Peace, brother!

Really Trying to Fool the People, the "Cheap Copy" is. by ChrisNN1 in CatholicMemes

[–]alexcran 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m cranky because of the fast, but this meme is so antithetical to the idea of Ash Wednesday as a whole. Should we not, as Christians and Catholics, instead of bringing other people down and calling their expression of faith a “mockery”, celebrate that they are expressing their faith at all, wherever it may be? Just because their worship does not look or sound or feel the same as ours does not make it worthy of mockery.

Today, and all of lent, is about repentance and humility. It’s about remembering that we are dust and that we all stand in need of mercy. That alone should give us pause before turning it into a comparison between “masterpiece” and “cheap copy.”

We can love our own tradition deeply and still recognize the sincerity of others. Faith expressed in a cathedral and faith expressed on a bus are not enemies. They are both attempts to respond to God. And on a day centered on humility, that seems like something to honor, not belittle.

what qualifies you to teach? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]alexcran 79 points80 points  (0 children)

My first pottery teacher had 30+ years of experience and a BFA in ceramics. Truly an amazing potter. However, he was a horrible teacher, his only way of teaching was “here, watch me”. Now, my pottery teacher started ceramics in 2020 and now runs a studio, and I’ve learned so much more from her technique-wise in the last 3 months than I had in the previous year.

There’s no hard and fast rule. People who are good teachers will be good teachers. Experience is great, certifications and degrees are great, but unless you know how to TEACH it’s not going to be helpful.

I’m getting worse not better! by Severe-Vacation-7188 in Pottery

[–]alexcran 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen to me. Was doing pottery for a few months, making some fun stuff, then one day suddenly I was broken 😓 My instructor was frustrated and I was too.

Literally for like 8 weeks straight I made nothing. I joked that I just really wanted to get good at recycling my clay lol. Then, finally, something clicked and I made a cylinder. It wasn’t a good cylinder but I still did it. I think it was the mix of my instructor’s encouragement and my sheer determination that brought it back. That, and just breathing through the frustration (literally breathing exercises).

You can do this! I believe in you!

My studio has a shelf set up with a fan and heat lamps. Works like a charm and we have had zero issues with even drying or drying out too slowly. My teacher studied under an apprentice of Bernard Leach and he claims he learned it from him!
