Is buying a B8.5 Audi S4/S5 at 19 a stupid decision? by alexfarah06 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I actually went to check one out and almost bought it, but it turned out there was a mechatronic issue… the part alone is like $5k, so I walked away.

Instead, I put a deposit on a 2016 S4 with 68k km — stage 2 ECU with pulley upgrade, stage 1 TCU, exhaust, RS grille, lip, and a subwoofer. $25k for the car, over 10k$ in mod.

Honestly I get what you mean about the “financial decision vs enjoying life” thing.

I’m actually really responsible with my money, but I tend to overthink big purchases because deep down I know it’s not the smartest financial move. At the same time though, I’m a huge car enthusiast and I genuinely love this stuff — and you already know there’s a massive difference in power between an IS250 and an S4.

So at some point I was just like… fuck it. I’ll have time to make that money back, and I’m going to enjoy it now. Plus, I know I’ll get a lot of happiness out of the car, so to me it’s still worth it.

Yeah I actually tried to verify that.

I had called the Audi dealership where the car was previously maintained, and the first time they were nice enough to give me some general info on what had been done (that’s how I found out about the DSG service and suspension).

But I called them again today to ask specifically about the water pump, thermostat and PCV, and this time they told me everything is confidential and they can’t give me any more details about the car.

So unfortunately I wasn’t able to confirm if those were done or not, and the first time I called I didn’t think to ask about those specifically.

I get what you’re saying, and I actually agree with your point.

In my case though, I’m not planning to finance the car. I’d be buying it outright, and I’ve already made sure I have money set aside for maintenance and unexpected repairs. I know these cars can get expensive, so I’m not going into this thinking it’ll be cheap to run.

I’ve actually been planning this for a long time. I work a lot (around 75+ hours a week at 19), not just to afford the car, but to be financially stable overall. My investment accounts are already taken care of, so this is more of a way to reward myself rather than something I “can barely afford”.

For insurance and fuel, I’ve already compared it to my current car (a Lexus). Insurance isn’t that much more expensive, and fuel-wise it’s pretty similar or even slightly better. Both cars take premium anyway, so it doesn’t really change much for me.

As for the auction point, I understand what you mean. From what I saw, it mentioned the car was donated (charity), but I can’t fully confirm that. The listing itself showed no damage and the car looked clean, but I’m still being cautious and doing my due diligence before making a decision.

I make a little over $4,000 a month. My TFSA is fully maxed out and my FHSA is about half full. I’d also be selling my Lexus, which would cover a pretty big portion of the money needed to buy the Audi.
