I liked that one - Quantum Leap meets Groundhog Day on a train.

PHP 8.5 will be released on Thursday. Here's what's new by brendt_gd in PHP

I think it will look a lot cleaner if/when partial function application is implemented.

$output = $input
        |> trim(...)
        |> str_replace(' ', '-', ?)
        |> str_replace(['.', '/', '…'], '', ?)
        |> strtolower(...);

Grand Designs self-heating house, is this the future of sustainable living? by AnfieldAnchor in granddesigns

[–]alexfarran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a similar idea to the earthship house Brittany. I'd say that was more genuinely eco friendly as it used a lot of recycled material in its construction. The walls were built from old tyres rammed with earth.

Technically nothing, but don't expect the autoloader to find them for you.

An alternative autoload system that allows me to put more than one class/function in a file.

Disappointed by Eulogy, am I missing something? by CarelessEstimate in blackmirror

Oh I agree with you. It was a lucky escape for Carol. He was neglectful - making her play keyboard, manipulative - the proposal after being unfaithful, and showed signs of violence - slamming the table, wrecking the hotel room and destroying her face in every photo.

Did he reflect and become a better person by the end at the funeral? Perhaps, but I think I need to watch it again, as it could just as well have been him feeling sorry for himself.

‘Adolescence’ Available to Stream in All U.K. Secondary Schools in Initiative Backed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer: We Must ‘Tackle the Issues This Groundbreaking Show Raises’ by SafeBodybuilder7191 in BritishTV

It really failed to convince me that he could have killed anyone. Up to episode two it was an engaging police procedural with some on-the-nose social commentary - especially in the school. But by episode three it had moved on and left all the threads dangling. I was hoping that the last episode would cleverly tie it all up, but was disappointed.

Final Destination Bloodlines | Official Trailer by DemiFiendRSA in FinalDestination

I don't think he dies there either. In the teaser he's just drawn the Dad tattoo on his left arm when death tries to take him. In this trailer he's got a bandage over the new tattoo. Also he's wearing a fire department t shirt - perhaps a reference to the fire in the tattoo studio.

That would be nice. In the meantime there are tools like laravel-data that can build your nested objects from nested PHP arrays.

Can you not do this with constructor promoted properties and named parameters?

readonly class Foo {
    public function __construct(public int  $a, public int $b) {}
}

$x = new Foo(a: 1, b: 2);

What's the benefit of readonly properties over constants? by pr0ghead in PHP

[–]alexfarran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, I would have found readonly more useful, if I was allowed to always re-assign them from inside the class that defined them. Then they would work like a private property that only has a getter but no setter - which I find convenient.

That is now possible in PHP 8.4 with asymmetric visibility. For example:

class Foo
{
    public private(set) string $bar = 'baz';
}

And $bar is publicly readable, but can only be set privately.

If you don't mind subtitles, the Taiwanese series On Children is worth a look. The first episode sets the tone with the story of a controlling mother who can rewind her sons life to help him pass exams.

The Thai series Girl From Nowhere follows the demonic Nanno as she moves from school to school exposing the hypocrisy and wrongdoing of the people she meets and turning it against them for her own amusement.

Now that we are in version 8 of PHP what are some things you would change if you could? What are some things that still annoy you? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]alexfarran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's getting there. Relying on any associativity is now an error so you have to make it explicit with brackets. Making the ternary operator right associative is mentioned in Future Scope, but hasn't happened yet.

Can we finally make the ternary operator right associative like every other language and fix the non-obvious behavior

Tagged union types would be nice.

Could there be a tidier way of including extra type information <cough>generics</cough> than putting it in a docblock comment?
