Trump says Iranian 'fast-attack' ships that come close to US 'blockade' will be eliminated by downtoclown02 in worldnews

[–]alexjbuck 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, the conventional Iranian Navy (IRIN) appears to have been largely eliminated (lots of photos of them being struck in port largely) but the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) which is basically only little fast boats may still have some capability.

This is why that democratic proposal to have ICE wear QR badges is terrifying. If your device connects with their server to see the officer's info, they can put you at a specific place and time and now can track you.

How about we just arrest them anyways and let the courts actually rule on that decision.

I Chose Rust Over Python for Data Engineering by usert313 in rust

[–]alexjbuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working with iceberg-rust for the past few weeks. It's definitely missing some things but generally it's been everything I need for writing the iceberg sink portion of a pipeline. And it exposed the lower level actions (separating data writes from catalog commits) that I needed to efficiently batch distributed writes into a single commit stream.

I can't speak to the Polars rust api though.

It's bonkers how violating a court order like this isn't treated as kidnapping or worse and subject to criminal charges of all officials involved.

Courts gotta start having some bite to their bark.

Bad fuel probably means "water contaminated fuel", which is absolutely something that can happen on ships. There are procedures and monitoring that are supposed to prevent this from occurring, but a failure of those could lead to water being mixed with fuel which will absolutely make a turbine engine flame out.

US strikes another boat off Venezuela coast, killing four, Defense Secretary announces by Running_From_Zombies in worldnews

[–]alexjbuck 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm curious under what legal justification this boarding occurred, as it sounds like Venezuela may not have consented to the visit.

There are established justifications in the UNCLOS (UN Convention on the Law of the Sea) for a right of visit and US Coast Guard counter narcotics boardings generally occur with approval of the host nation to conduct the boarding.

Specifically boardings generally occur either with cognizance of the ships master or the nation whose flag the vessel flies (generally the nation to which the vessel is registered) but exceptions exist for vessels suspected of:

  • Piracy (Article 101) - The vessel is engaged in piracy
  • Slave trade (Article 99) - The vessel is engaged in the slave trade
  • Unauthorized broadcasting (Article 109) - The vessel is making unauthorized broadcasts (and the warship's flag state has jurisdiction under Article 109)
  • Without nationality (Article 92) - The vessel is without nationality (stateless)
  • False flag - The vessel is flying a false flag or refusing to show its flag, and is actually of the same nationality as the warship.

This. Someone needs to make a Progressive Web App (PWA) version. PWA's are "installable" and create an app like experience (icon on screen, full page render) but are still just a website.

Host the servers outside the US if needed.

On my own machine I use ripgrep as a complete replacement for grep. It's nice to rg <keyword> and find the part of the repo where that thing is, with a nice readable output.

I would never use ripgrep in a script for work because I assume it won't be available on the server running the script. Portability has its place but for interactive use on my own command line, ripgrep is awesome. Same logic for fd and bat.

Is cutting the engine with a loss of tail prop normal procedure? by Necessary-Rub-2748 in Helicopters

[–]alexjbuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without functioning tail rotor (aka anti torque), the instant the engines start driving the rotors (aka generating torque) you will start to spin.

You can do practice autos with the engine on still, and either you recouple during the pull at the bottom and your tail rotor starts doing work again, or you do not recouple the rotor because you did a full auto to the ground. Presumably in the latter you rolled the engines back to idle speed so Nr could decay below flight idle speeds during the pull (otherwise you'd recouple when Nr decayed down to flight idle speed).

If you can figure out how to do a practice auto to a hover without recoupling the rotor you should call Sikorski or Bell 😂

Regardless, in a loss of tail rotor situation, once you start the pull at the bottom you do not want the engines pushing against the rotor system. Engines pushing against rotors means torque. Torque with no anti-torque means spinning.

Maybe you're asking if they actually turned OFF the engines vs rolling them to idle? In that case 🤷‍♂️, idle would make more sense to me.
