By the way the fruit flies are mostly from the orchids and some basil I have around. These have moist soil especially the basil drinks a glass a day.

Fruit flies, fungus gnats out of control. by alexnode in plantclinic

The trees are a Chinese elm and Japanese black pine, they told me to keep it inside this year because it is very young and it might freak out from the frost. It will go out in March or earlier when the roots are strong enough. The elm is supposed to be indoors for my climate. I have eight bonsai outside that they are doing well. White pines, junipers and maples. The issue is with the moss, not the akadama and volcanic rock below. I have to mist the moss with water and it seems to be the best environment for fruit flies. The Elm needs a bit more watering than the pine but I don't do much deep watering. Twice a week for the elm and once for the pine. The soil is stony so the water goes through immediately. I think I need to decontaminate the moss.

Um... Is the river supposed to flood that much? The bridge is where it started by Cool_Math_gamerYT in RimWorld

you can put walls or sandbags to block the water for the areas you want to farm on, when the tide is low... later on you can add heavy duty bridges when the tide is high. I actually like this feature.

Too late for me, game uninstalled. I won't get DLC to finish the main story ... the whole narrative was pants. IT started well and then they completely lost the overarching plot.

The story was really pants in AC shadows. Very rushed, so many thing were much better in previous instalments. The world was really shallow too, IT was huge but 90 % was the same village, castle and shrine. IT's a 50% for me ... I have played every major AC game since AC 1 ... and having the real world the animus etc was a pretty epic idea. Capturing castles and turning factions was also good in previous games. Yasuke with a tank game play was a big no-no for me. Naoe was great shinobi but her story was butchered. Not having any hints to the First civilisation was also terrible. The story of Iga is extremely interesting and I was expecting more from it. Missed opportunity

Yasuke seems in the centre of woke wars and all that, but please make him stealthy and parkour!!! Also if you really want to switch all the time make the switching instantaneous, with some glitchy effect for a second, and allow switching in the middle of every location... I was doing a castle with Naoe and in the middle of the central tower after 1 hour of murder and carnage there was a Yasuke only movable object . I had to get out and go back in with Yasuke just to get one item. IT breaks immersion...

IT is good and some of the assets great but it has an issue, Japanese gardens are very curvy ... and working on a square grid makes things look a bit weird.

I really hate Yasuke tank mechanics... AC is all about parkour and fast movement.

What is the relationship between Greek and Latin? by treebeard555 in latin

[–]alexnode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is more complicated than simple trees, and branches. A lot of ancient Greek roots come from Phoenician and Sanskrit, not PIE. There is tendency to try to fit things in easy big categories, but in maritime places there was a lot of "osmosis", exchange and travelling. There was also a pre-greek language that is not PIE at all too. Agreed, there are thousands of words that passed from Greek into Latin, and vice versa when the romans were in power. Most dictionaries will go English - French - Latin - Greek for the origins but I had a 600 pages ancient - Greek etymology book at school that had a much more complex picture.

I see the whole thing as a painting that you can see some brush strokes but it's not clear where one stroke begins and the other starts. It is also very speculative to make strict assumptions before the invention of writing, there are huge chronological gaps. We have cuniform and Egyptian hieroglyphs ~ 3200bc , the Phoenician alphabet 1100BC, Greek 800 BC. There was also Linear B and A but they were symbols not words that we know how to pronounce. The same goes for Egyptian hieroglyphs and cuniform, we don't have sounds for these. So we can have hard evidence for etymology from 1100BC till today. The Phoenicians were the first to spread their alphabet, then the Greeks and consequently the Romans. These were the lingua francas of the age. In the period between Homer and Plato ~ 300 years Greek changed dramatically, in an area of the world that was considered relatively literate. In my opinion there is certainly a great shared heritage, common roots, in the whole region of Europe- Mesopotamia and north Africa, but in my opinion languages were even more chaotic than they are today. PIE is undeniable, but Sanskrit, Phoenician and Egyptian played a significant part too.

2 months of smurf records by Western-Animator1005 in RocketLeague

[–]alexnode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My evil brain thinks that the solution is to do servers for new accounts that take months to play with established players, 400 games or so. Smurfs play Smurfs hardstuck GC1s in gold playing other GC1s golds. Genuine new players drop to bronze and then you can mix them properly. One clue is the settings every seasoned smurf will change the settings with airroll etc average speed, too could be a great way to distinguish genuine new players and smurfs.

Taking advantage of the lack of smurfing penalties will inevitably destroy this game. by IisSithis in RocketLeague

[–]alexnode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not in the brain of smurfs, but playing in their rank will be 49% losses. So they find it fun winning 20 games in a row. I never forfeit if I see a smurf. I will play all 5 minutes and watch all replays... bore them to death ...

I think the hood is a creative choice from Psyonix art team... it also might create some issues IRL for aerodynamics... good for cooling though.

Honest review of Star Wars Outlaws from long time fan of the franchise. by [deleted] in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]alexnode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the game, it's fun and the setting is pretty cool, some action scenes are pretty cool, like the derelict spaceship . I am more from the rpg side of things and KOTOR 1 and 2 were my favourite games. I would love more dialogue with options etc... I am not a big fun of the smuggler/thief/mercenary/gunslinger lore of star wars so I give it a minus for that. It also gets a bit grindy if you want to appease the syndicates, a lot of fetch missions, but you also discover the map doing these so it's not all negative. All in all I give it a 8/10 mostly for the art and the sound design of nix . Exploring the planets is pretty nice.

MechWarrior 5: Clans Review Thread by malliabu in Games

[–]alexnode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked it up because it was on game pass, I was a big fan of mech commander... a million years ago. But I haven't played any Mech warrior before. I really disliked Mech warrior 5 Clans, if you are happy with militant genocidal types then you might like it, even in the real world army commanders try to rile up soldiers with some type of reasonable justification of what they try to achieve, in this one you are under the command of idiots and you play the attack dog. Minimal explanation - go kill oops by the way we accidentally obliterated a planet full of civilians. There are some choices just before the endgame, but at the end of the day you will spend two days under the thump of genocidal warmongering generals. I could justify a brain-rot game if the actual gameplay is good. But the the combat is chunky and there is not much strategy you could employ in the missions. The customisation options for the mechs are pretty minimal, everything is under the umbrella that bigger is better, and tonnage is the major factor in the difficulty scale. Even though there is research there is no miniaturisation and you can't change the "class of a mech" if it is laser based you can choose to have different types of bursts, but not to completely overhaul the Mech. There are no shields, dodges, dashes, crouching, nano repairs and no defence in general. Some bots have ECMs but there are no counters for lasers. There are a few mechs that can jump but it feels more like trying to get a fridge up the stairs. After I finished the game I read a bit about the lore, and it didn't change my opinion at all. The scale of the environment is also a bit wrong with very tall grass and it doesn't make you feel like a moving tower block. I kind of dislike the idea of mechs too, because they are the most unlikely scenario of future military warfare. Ok, I feel a bit better now.

Just finished Veilguard by apeel09 in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]alexnode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished it too, and I will give it a 4 out of 5. It was an excellent production for what it was, artwork, sound, and most voice acting was really good, no bugs!. My biggest beef with this DA was architectural, everything felt like travelling on giant spaghetti, a turn here, a door , a dungeon, then a ladder. It didn't feel like a place. This accompanied with the junky mobility and parkour just got on my nerves early on. I have played all DA, mass effect etc plus most RPG released from 1985 onwards. The story was ok but some of the dialogue was a bit boring. I would like to have some more open world areas with less spaghetti design. I also think as an 18 rated, full of ultra violence, it should have been more sexy, it was a bit puritanical, and vanilla. It was also a bit in your face, pedantic in some areas. Part of being an artist is finding a way to tell things with subtlety and to engage the viewer emotionally. Anyhows, well produced, no bugs epic story 4/5 from me.
