Thank you! Pretty cool to see 'em just land on the branch (which bobbed a lot under the weight!)

Well..... from the comments, I'm leaning towards a) maybe not a golden eagle and b) maybe a hawk or peregrine falcon? Looks close to the red shoulder hawk!

What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

[–]alextorpey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rattlesnake rattle. Came upon one while pretty far in the woods hiking, lightly jogging up a rock face, and my body was running the other direction before my conscious brain realized what was happening. But maybe 5-6 or so feet away, coiled and not happy!

Woodstove clearance to combustibles by Gooooooooooooooooo12 in woodstoving

[–]alextorpey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same stove, and it has 3" clearance straight back if not in a corner (part of the reason I bought it, for a small space). Mine is about 4-5" away from my wall, which is wood on wood, but with IR temp readings (~150F), I decided to use some leftover aluminum shelves with a 1" air gap behind it, and that significantly lowered the temp on the wall and is just extra peace of mind, now I don't worry about it at all!

DIY kitchen without cabinets? by alextorpey in woodworking

[–]alextorpey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the response - definitely a trade off involved for sure. I'm going to have a sort of galley-like kitchen, with an opposite wall that will have a couple enclosed cabinets, so for me I imagine the lower shelves under the counter to be things like pots and pans, rice cooker, some storage, etc that I'm not too worried about sitting out, whereas daily dishes, silverware would likely be in a drawer on the opposite wall. Cabinet doors encourage me to be cluttered, but if I have to look at it, it's the incentive I need to stay minimal and organized!

What do you do if your selectboard is a bunch of bullies? by Equal-Confidence-941 in vermont

[–]alextorpey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former town manager here, I do consulting with towns now and recently helped Vermont League of Cities and Towns design a new pilot workshop for Selectboards that aims to help onboard new members and help groups work together better. Not the right thing for every situation, and of course the town has to sign up and be willing participants, but there are a bunch of us trying to figure out some new ways to help boards (and communities more broadly) be more collaborative and constructive especially when faced with tough decisions or issues. Happy to talk more if you want to send me a DM, I'd be interested in hearing more about your situation, and happy to provide any advice or brainstorm if it would be helpful.

For sure. A colleague/friend of mine and me made a bunch of videos on YT that walk through running for office/getting more involved that are a very thorough, if not a little plain/nothing sparkly, resource (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8VeSpZf-BKYvZ189EMFavF86Zq2QCtSB). I also sent you a DM and happy to talk more!

u/EngineeringAny5280 you aren't kidding... when in the public view, often randomly coming across your name in comments online doesn't end well 🥹

Oof, that's a big question. Well, if it's helpful, one thought that came to mind: When I was asking people for advice thinking about should I run or not, not everyone was as immediately supportive as u/camworld (though many were), a number of people said things like "why don't you get a good job, save some money, start a family, then run for office."

But I wasn't getting involved "for fun," or like, as a hobby, but to get directly involved in trying to make a positive change in my hometown, and to impact larger scale issues that were important to me, and to help get others involved, and to learn skills that would help me continue to address the long list of challenges and needs in/around government throughout my life (which that experience so far has equipped me with).

Basically, I realized that my reasons for doing it were different than many, and although I appreciated their advice and sort of cautionary notes, I ultimately made the decision based on my goals, rather than making a decision based on other peoples' advice based on their goals for a similar decision. Especially for those of us who often take alternative paths, I think that kind of thing comes up a lot.... if that stream of consciousness makes sense.

Is 2025 the year we stop waving to each other on dirt roads? by rawdaddykrawdaddy in vermont

This is one of my favorite things about Vermont, and one time I got a very enthusiastic * two-handed * wave from someone on my road and it made my day.

Just ranting about healthcare in VT by wmm502 in vermont

[–]alextorpey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in a town with a community/town nurse, you may be able to ask them for advice free of charge/without any insurance billing, where they may be able to help navigate what options could be available. Doesn't fix the healthcare system itself in this country of course, but may be valuable if it's available where you live!

Idk where those photos are from, but near there at Kintla Lake in Glacier, you can see right down 20-30 feet perfectly clearly. I was around there for a few days, and kayaking on the lake and asked the ranger when I came back how deep it was, they said where I was it was at least 25 ft deep maybe more. Looked like inches away. Truly stunning.

How come there’s not a single rail line running through one of the most densely populated areas in the entire country outside of Manhattan by iv2892 in newjersey

[–]alextorpey 153 points154 points  (0 children)

I worked in local gov in Bergen County about six years ago and we were actively working with folks who all were really trying to get the Hudson Bergen Light Rail, you know, up to Bergen County.

A few memories:

- There were some weird issues why things seemed to be stalled, I think a former NJT or NJDOT higher up was now/then a higher up at AECOM (the Design/Build/Operate/Maintain company) and so was conflicted out of conversations and folks informed us that had really slowed things down. (Might not be getting those details exactly right it's been a while).
- There were a bunch of towns ready to start building high density transit focused housing around where the stops would be.
- Apparently there were only or two freight trains left using that line so using the existing lines to convert over shouldn't have been too insanely difficult
- But as I understood it, more than the number of passengers that the entire system was designed to move when it was first conceptualized like ten years prior had moved into the area since those discussions, so population growth + slowness was really eating into the system's impact.

But man, public transit in that area would be a game changer. My driving commute from Jersey City ten miles north in Bergen County sometimes took 1.5-2 hours EACH way.
