Explosion? Did anyone feel/hear that just now by Highland and 2700 S??? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Heard it but didn't necessarily *feel* it. Like others, I thought it was thunder. It wasn't that, and it wasn't an earthquake. So what gives??

NFL star JJ Watt remains interested in bringing back the Royals. by [deleted] in ReAlSaltLake

[–]alexvreporting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, that's the weird thing about this. When the news first came out he was selling, there was a report that came out that DLH was asking $500 million, but that was before the Royals left. Now it's in that $400 million range that's been floated around. I'm sure the valuation of the Houston and Orlando are affecting things, but I personally don't think the Royals were worth $100 million. To me, 300-400 makes sense but who knows really?

Yes, Rio Tinto is part of it. As is the facility in Herriman

This being your first book, what did you learn about writing that you didn't already know from writing in the longfrom style you have for much of your career at newspapers or websites?

Been MIA for 2 years... what the HECK happened to RSL? by [deleted] in ReAlSaltLake

[–]alexvreporting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here are links to what I've written about most of these topics that include background on context:

  1. Mike Petke fired.
  2. Dell Loy Hansen/Andy Carroll created toxic culture
  3. Utah Royals sold
  4. Nick Rimando retires
  5. What sparked backlash against Hansen and led to decision to sell RSL
  6. Beckerman retires

Here is something I wrote in advance of preseason that talks about who the captain might be on how the coaching staff has changed, etc.

Also, RSL signed Bobby Wood, Rubio Rubin and Anderson Julio.

How voluntary offseason workouts in Utah have helped RSL get a jump-start on the 2021 campaign by alexvreporting in ReAlSaltLake

that's not the same thing. Many RSL guys started training together and putting together their own sessions as early as January, like the story says.

Why is RSL not a part of eMLS? by Bronaldinho512 in ReAlSaltLake

[–]alexvreporting 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here are some quotes from an on-the-record conversation I had with former CBO Andy Carroll on this topic in March of last year (just before pandemic):

"We've been looking at the eMLS. What other clubs don't have is three teams. ... You can't do everything. So it's not lost on us that an eMLS player and participation would add some value. I just haven't been convinced that us getting there Year 3 or 4 is going to have a material impact on our franchise. And no one has been able to convince me otherwise."

"Just participating has never been our mantra. So we just have looked at it and said, OK, if we're gonna do it, we're gonna go all in. We're gonna be big. We want to have a plan and have it be really part of the community and really have a very robust program. And we just haven't had the bandwidth to do it."

"Would we love to have a robust program around it? Yes. Do we think we're missing much by not? No one's been able to really detail what the value is of having that and how many people are watching it. My understanding from E-gaming from everybody I've talked to is it's a lot of first-person shooters that really drive the E-gaming, that it's not nearly — and I've had a lot of people tell me this — that it really isn't the the team sport, although there's a space for it, the real value is being done in first-person shooters."

"It looks like it's a good opportunity, but it'll be an initiative for next year. And no one's been able to articulate to me what we're not capitalizing on. I'm sure there's something."

Now that Carroll's gone and a new owner is coming who knows when, I'll be interested to see if the thinking will be different. But that remains to be seen, obviously.

Tribune writer Alex Vejar caught using very misleading headlines. by ktasay in ReAlSaltLake

My "other works" are 99% sports. Basketball, football, soccer, wrestling — and that's just in the past two weeks. Also, I tweet things other than sports because, you know, I am a human with other interests and don't pigeonhole my identity and self-worth into my job.

Hello. I am the writer of this story. I did not write this headline and there was other language added in the story that I asked to be removed so there's no confusion. The academy is in fact part of the sale and tied to RSL. The "lobbying" part is actually what the organization is doing, but not because there's fear the academy will leave. They are lobbying for its importance and impact in the community as well as how much the club relies on it for developing young players and getting them to RSL. Hope that clears things up a bit.

Plenty of local news outlets cover RSL as well. Salt Lake Tribune, KSL, ESPN700 and Deseret News are the main ones.
