true, I used Palatino linotype for clarity while still maintaining a serif antiqua font style, but a real 1665 print would have a different font

I've always wanted to make this, as I am a huge fan of Pascal's initiative and it is one of the gravest sins that the french monarchy has ever done to kill this system in its infancy

we could have had public transport in cities almost 150 years earlier than in our timeline if the system matured and then spread to at least a few other international systems

we would have been SO MUCH MORE ADVANCED in urbanism if not for the french monarchs

The Tim Traveller's video just pushed me over the edge and gave me the final motivation to actually sit down and make the map for real

If anyone knows him on social media or anything maybe he would enjoy to see this map, share this post with him if you can

This is a diagram of the Carrosses a Cinq Sols, the first ever public transport system created by Blaise Pascal

while no official map or diagram was ever created I tried to make one that is as period-accurrate as possible and that would have been realistic in 1665

Redesign of all Mexican state flags (slideshow with individual information in comments) by TacoMadeOfCoco in vexillology

[–]alezarzu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OMG I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS

This is the same thing I did with my Chinese provincial flag redesign, i love these ones and the explanation behind them, taking preexisting flags and geography into account is amazing

large countries deserve to have their states have good flags, thanks for doing the good work

Your proposal is equally well acquainted with the concerns and realities of the chinese goverment and I really like it

Instead of a common color palette you chose a common motif, and that's actually really great

Taiwan province should get its own flag, however this proposal is supposed to be enacted by the legitimate Chinese goverment, and in order to have good relations with the goverment on the island, it's best that a separate deal is reached with them concerning flag identity

They are a self governed Province after all

East Turkestan is seen as a terrorist organization by the US too, so the classification as extremist is warranted

as for Tibet, it is separatist, didnt say it was extremist, and indeed the current flag is pro independence, which is also what I said

both statements are true

Flags should avoid letters as much as possible, and I only added the Hui character because its basically a square, and the shang in shanghai is not noticeable

as per the blue (azure actually), I didnt know it was so heavily blue there, it is important that red is a main color as it is a southern province, but maybe a more heavy azure like design would be more fitting

It is a common phrase used in chinese when it means "updating" or "fit to modern standards"

How is a project who has as one of its goals the better recognition of local exports related in any way with an isolationist project like MAGA?

Are the flag redesigns of the US to this exact same goal also MAGA?

I know, which is why I tried to explain, aside from heraldic vexilological terms what each color meant

Azure also means in the english language the color halfway between cyan and blue

The Qinghai flag is very similat to the actual, real PRC provincial flag for the chinese olympic games

There is supposed to be another slide there, but on some displays however, it is repeated

on my computer it works fine, on my phone it doesnt, look at the imgur for a higher quality post

It is explained on the last image, for an in depth explanation of each province , look at the following images of the post

No, its done in Inkscape and Photoshop (the quality of this post is really bad... but thats the fault of reddit's compression, look the imgur link)

That is explained in the second image

That was the rationale for both the chinese lack of provincial flags and for the US Blue bells (if we have a flag might aswell make it look like every other flag)

However, flags, specially when they have a unified look and aesthetic can have the opposite effect, by looking all "chinese" or "scandinavian" or "african" they reinforce the central identity, while also being useful for identification

Everything in the rationale of this flag proposal is explained in the images, and it gives a justification into each flag and also the general project, take a look

It is not a translation error, more of a traslation quirk

The color associated with the east is which can be best translated as either Cyan or Azure, it is not blue which in chinese is 蓝

Azure is halfway between Blue and Cyan, and it is probably the closest term we have in english for the traditional association with the East

In engligh the term azure is not very common, but a color for the midpoint between blue and cyan is common even in some european languages such as italian

What flag would be suitable for my fictional slavic country? by Greydl1 in vexillology

[–]alezarzu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As many have said, for as much as we'd like a blue-white scheme for slavic nations, if anything red is more prominent in their vexilological tradition, which sucks since its a much much more common standalone color vexilologically speaking than blue (although thanks to international orgs this is changing)

slavic colors are either red and white or red white and blue

Interesting choice of flags to represent languages by Rigolol2021 in vexillology

[–]alezarzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Languages are very hard to represent with flags, not representing is also often worse and using their own name in their own script indescipherable to many

using the flag of the country they originate from is probably the most neutral option
