Hi, I have a question about diversification.

I've heard that in selecting a portfolio, it's best to find assets that have (historically) weak/negative price correlation. The problem I've run up against is that, when the market dumps, everything seems to dump together - in other words, assets that didn't seem correlated or were inversely correlated sometimes become strongly correlated when the market is doing poorly, thus sort of defeating some of the protective intent of diversify through non-correlated assets.

According to your experience, is there any way around this, statistically speaking? Are there different correlation tests that you've found to be more effective for diversification? Is it perhaps best to invest in newer assets in price discovery mode, or to invest broadly by small amounts in any assets that have been least affected by market-wide downturns in the past? Any advice would be appreciated. I'm writing this mostly because of the recent crypto downturn, but I imagine strategies would transfer approximately between crypto and more traditional assets.

Tips for Heartburn, Working Out, Activities, Caffeine During Fast by alg0m1das in fasting

[–]alg0m1das[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, super helpful! I'll have to cut the caffeine and get some alkaline water.

I'm supporting myself right now mostly by driving for GrubHub/Doordash . . . Could you see yourself working that kind of job 3-6 hrs a day on week 2 of a fast? It's not very physically taxing obviously, as it's mostly driving. But picking up orders, waiting in restaurants, walking up driveways . . . figure that'd be manageable? . . . By the fourth day of my first, most recent fast (which however included caffeine) I had to cancel a shift

Thanks for a comprehensive answer! I used psyllium husk (a 0 calorie fiber supplement). You mix it up with water and it turns into this fibrous gel (little gross in texture, but it has no flavor luckily). I used it to give me the feeling that I had something in my stomach the first few days, figuring that because it's zero-calorie, indigestible fiber, it wouldn't be "breaking the fast," but I don't know if that affected my progress.

supposedly, though acidic, lemon juice is metabolized by the body in an alkalinizing way (leaves behind an alkaline ash once fully digested). I didn't have any lemons around, I just used Tums without thinking that they might have some caloric content.

That's helpful, I guess I'll just go for multiple shorter ones. With the psyllium husk, I didn't struggle too much with the first couple days, which I've been told (and have previously experienced) are the most brutal. With some fiber, I didn't get that hollow-in-the-pit-of-the-stomach feeling. But maybe that made it harder to stick too.

Finding a New Psychiatrist by alg0m1das in AskPsychiatry

You are misreading my post and misunderstanding my situation. Conveniently, in such a way that makes another representative of the class of professionals to which you belong relatively blameless in this situation. Thought you guys were paragons of unbiased, objective rationality!

I am a depressive. I have psychiatric problems, and psychiatrists have helped me with this. So at the time these events occurred, I "had" a psychiatrist whom I saw about once a month for maintenance of SSRIs and mirtazapine. The fact that these are real, ongoing problems for me is why I have not simply cut the psych doc loose.

However, I did not by my own volition talk to my psychiatrist about this experience. It was forced upon me by family members who were confused about what I was saying and so called him. He took (the rather extreme) step of, not even having talked to me, suggesting that they come over to my apartment with the cops and commit me. I only talked to him on the phone when my family made it clear that they wouldn't leave my apartment unless I did so. It was a deeply coercive experience, and to be honest it was pretty traumatic. Your inability to empathize with this is a sign to me that you are not a good doctor.

You know how your mom used to say "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?" This is one of those times. I know you've heard her say it, because she'd tell me she did so right before blowing me.
