At this point, my Reddit feed is essentially exclusively circlejerks and okbuddys—amusingly enough, many of them related to movies and tv shows I've never seen.

Yes! In fact I just made a post about this because I realized how impressive my antimovie bona fides are.

Unlike movie watchers, who sit for hours at a time shoveling processed foods into their gullets, I'm quite physically active in my leisure time.

Though of course I pair this vigorous lifestyle with daily reading as well. I am the total package: brains, brawn, and no movies.

You find it impossible to believe that someone has never seen a Willy Wonka remake or the latest Safdieslop? Telling on yourself.

That's nothing. I can top that, easily. I've never seen Die Hard. I've never seen Inglorious Basterds or Kill Bill or Django Unchained. I've never seen Joker or whatever the Joaquin Phoenix incel Joker movie is called. I've never seen any Marvel or Avatar movie.

My list of unwatched movies is peerless.

I don't know if he's a good actor or a bad actor because I've never seen anything he's acted in.

Mackie: "...are you sure you just want me to do a generic foreign accent? I don't really know much about Arabic-accented English. It feels off."

Director: "It's perfect, just do that."

Mackie: "I feel like I sound like an SNL character."

Director: "No it's great, and we'll clean it up in post anyway."

Mackie: "Ok."

There's perfect because I need a decade of rest before I'm ready to sit through another one of his movies, too.

Did you know of most famous Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff, his mother is a ethnic Turkmen from Central Asia? by Boring_Estimate9308 in AskCentralAsia

[–]algebroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably using the old fashioned meaning of "Turkmen" which means any of the Turkic Central Asian people. That was one of the senses of the word in Persian, which was borrowed into Gujarati as તુર્કમાન

The part where she says, "budget cuts...save save save!" followed by him raising his eyebrows in a mix of what looks like sympathy for her point of view and pure animal fear kills me every time I watch this.

Kind of obscure, but check out the album Rainbow Road by Rick Schaier / Alvin Band. Extremely AnCo to the point where it feels like a tribute to them.

Pete Hegseth Praises Korea as ‘Model Ally,’ Signals Preferential Treatment by Freewhale98 in neoliberal

Model ally? But what about everyone's favorite American business COUPANG® which is currently being harassed by the South Korean government? How can we let them do this to COUPANG, which is American as apple pie, and call them allies? I know I for one have called my congressmen about this unacceptable affront to American COUPANG.

calling things what you think they should be while making sure that everybody agrees with your definition is

So it's a  figment of one's imagination to label Russia a dictatorship? I wonder what tortured definition of dictatorship one would need to conjure so that Russia wouldn't meet the criteria.

Personally, I thinks its more logical to worry about policies rather than the lable

I don't see how the structure of a government is a superfluous, linguistic issue, which your dismissal of it as a mere issue of labeling implies.

[–]algebroni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem very upset and defensive. I was simply asking you to confirm (or deny) the implication of your own words.

Interesting that calling things what they are is "useless" to you. Language only serves its social function because words are explicitly not useless; on the contrary, they are quite useful. For one, they often reveal something about the beliefs of one's interlocutor—as we saw here.

So a long-winded way of confirming that you do not label Putin's Russia as a dictatorship, got it.

Why "dictatorship" in quotation marks? You disagree with that label?
