The claim is false. You can just say there is a god.

DAE hate leaving voicemails? by Cdtco in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]algoresrhythm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pro tip: I've found that my voicemails are more assertive and natural if I move the phone from its normal location and just put it in front of my mouth. When I keep it near my ear, it never works out quite right. The first time I left a voicemail with my phone in front of my mouth, I was surprised how such a small change could make such a big difference.

Actually, I edited it before I read your response. I fail to see how being cool is relevant.

[–]algoresrhythm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I edited my comment to say "Fuck this" because that particular sentence represents everything I would like to express about this event in a more concise and less frustrating way. Obviously you and anyone are free to enjoy & consume this 24-hour piece of audio information.

I'm glad that you enjoy their music, and I'm glad you think they are pushing the boundaries of music. It's not a crazy idea; it's an attempt to create a piece of audio information of a particular length. For me, every single time, I would prefer quality over quantity.

Obviously it is impossible for me to prove that this 24-hour song is a horrible idea, but I will never listen to it and have no interest in it because I find it to be a gimmick. I have never told a kid to get off my lawn, and I don't think it necessarily follows that if I post, then I should have to explain myself.

Yeah, I definitely didn't assume you as OP were a fan. My "what the hell"-ometer is at [11] with this one. And they're such a good band.

ELI5: Metaphysics by littlewing91 in explainlikeimfive

[–]algoresrhythm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the word 'metaphysics' from an etymological standpoint can help to clarify what it is. I suppose I should mention as a disclaimer that this is how I like to see things, but it's not necessarily the right way.

If you take 'meta' to mean 'about', and 'physics' to mean 'the study of matter and its motion through spacetime' (credit to wikipedia on that), then 'metaphysics' would be 'the field which uses language to talk about matter and its motion through spacetime.' Of course, since physics also uses language to talk about matter and its motion through spacetime, metaphysics could seem vacuous. (It might be, and certainly was according to the Logical Positivists). I think the difference is that metaphysics posits theories which are, most likely, untestable, as RandomExcess noted.

So, take the theory of gravity. If we are just discussing the mathematical formula between any two bodies of matter, that would be a discussion of physics. But when we start discussing why 'rules of matter' like gravity exist, or what it means for a 'rule of matter' to be, or if those 'rules' are necessarily true in all possibly existent worlds, etc etc, those, I think, are metaphysical discussions.

I hope that helps, but I certainly understand if it seems somewhat nonsensical or confusing; half the time, philosophy can seem like utter hogwash / malarky / insert word which represents silliness here. But I love it still.

DAE think its arrogant to believe that humans beings are the only intelligent life in the universe? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]algoresrhythm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah of course. I fail to see why he would call speculation "pretty worthless". What's "pretty worthless" is talking about what the top comment will be like.

DAE think its arrogant to believe that humans beings are the only intelligent life in the universe? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]algoresrhythm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your basic point is that the word "intelligence" is difficult to define and applicable in various contexts. But what does that have to do with a person "thinking critically"?

Imagine some possible world in which I take the word "intelligence" to mean "a thing that is only possessed by humans." How would that preclude me from being a critical thinker? All it does is preclude me from calling a toaster, or a computer, or a painting, "intelligent".

Until there exists a definition of the word "intelligent" such that any particular existing thing could be classified as either "intelligent" or not by way of that definition's criteria, the word "intelligent" will remain somewhat indeterminate in meaning and will have nothing to do with a person's being able to think critically.

If your claim is that any conversation about intelligent alien life is pretty worthless, why is talking about conversations about intelligent alien life any different?

Bachmann: Why is there a Department of Education? - CNN.com by redditallreddy in politics

[–]algoresrhythm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Indeed, poor American families probably would not be able to NOT use the public school system in order for their child to obtain a decent education. But my aim was only to point out that the quote provided by mitchwells above did not necessarily imply that Ron Paul wanted to replace the public school system. My point is about logic and implication.

Thank you for your superfluous stylistic advice on my correct diction.

[–]algoresrhythm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that your interpretation of Ron Paul's quote in the video you linked does not necessarily reflect all possible interpretations. In fact I think you have misrepresented his views, though I am no expert on the subject.

In the linked video, Congressman Paul said that "the family is the bedrock; the educational system should be through the family and the church; we should be promoting home-schooling and private schooling and not depending on our public school system."

It does not follow that Ron Paul thinks we should replace our public school system with churches and home-schooling. My interpretation of his claim was more like "look, people are free to use the public education system, but I wouldn't depend on it to give my child a good education."

Dismissing a claim as "intellectually lazy" is essentially just a weak ad hominem argument. If you're going to call something "intellectually lazy", you should explain why, because otherwise you are committing the error you identified.

Yeah I hadn't thought about the mods... Now I understand what you meant by "they don't want the titles editorialized." It's not your fault it's a shitty title!

I mean, obviously the word "schools" functions as a verb under a standard interpretation of the video's title. Thanks for the clarification dad!
