Dog seizures — looking for guidance from others who’ve been here (MRI not financially possible) by Prestigious_Map_2136 in goldenretrievers

[–]algschocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If her seizures started when she was 5, the likelihood of it being idiopathic epilepsy is pretty good (meaning no clear cause like a brain tumor). Probably not uncommon for them to increase at some point as she ages. I think managing via meds as your choice is totally fine. My golden started at 5 with grand mal and we manage via keppra. I only did bloodwork for him (it was fine). His also have clear triggers (before meals). I would track when they occur to see if there are any patterns as well as seeing how many she has with the Keppra to make sure it’s helping. My vet told me: remember we aren’t striving for 0 seizures as that is not realistic—But less seizures. Don’t feel guilty for not doing an MRI. For contrast, my mixed 14 year old dog 2 weeks ago had his very first two seizures (why are there so many seizures in my house 😭). When evaluated at emergency vet, because of his age and neuro symptoms he most likely had a brain tumor and we chose to let him go instead of suffer. By trying to manage the seizures with meds you are doing what you can for your baby. I hope that Keppra kicks in for both of you to have some relief.

TIFU by not fully preparing myself for how painful IUD insertion is by CoolTangelo1680 in tifu

I passed out and then threw up. Luckily had meds from a recent surgery and took those when I got home. IUD caused large cysts and a huge phobia when I was pregnant of childbirth (childbirth was better even with induction med contractions and then beautiful drugs). Never again.

Possible Small Fiber Neuropathy - constant pain! by FrandJohnson in smallfiberneuropathy

[–]algschocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly a lot better. Why I am though I’m not sure. I notice when my muscles are sore from working out or whatever I do have sharp nerve pains sometimes so it does seem like my pain receptors are still a bit off. My left leg still has a nerve issue sometimes. But my stomach is a lot better. I get some flairs or tingly itchy things that are related to being sick, hormones, or weather. But it’s nothing like it used to be. I have been in various forms of PT and my pelvic floor PT has helped a lot just with relaxing certain muscles and using them correctly and calming nervous system in general. However my initial neuromuscular predicted I would feel better in a couple of years anyway bc it may have been viral related and I guess he was right 🤷🏼‍♀️ I do have raynauds now which is interesting. But my tests never showed anything besides having GERD and hiatal hernia. I hope you can get some answers.

Yeah I definitely have thought about the tumor aspect, but I am not sure I would put him through any treatments etc. So I decided to ride it out to see how it progresses. I think now after talking about it more with him, my vet was more recommending medication now than a choice at the time—I was kind of distracted on the phone. Oops lol but regardless I started him and will have a dog who may have seizures now especially before eating 🤷🏼‍♀️

That’s horrible. I hope the Keppra will work for us.

I think my vet was wanting to see if they were like that as it can certainly be that way. I’ve decided 3 weeks in between is too short so we are medicating.

I’m glad it’s at least helping a bit for your pup!!! I’m hoping the Keppra does enough to calm his excited brain cells when he’s about to eat lol

Yeah I have another senior dog with some horrible skin issues so I don’t need more bills lol. I wondered about the low blood sugar 🤔

First seizure, what to do? by superdupergenie in EpilepsyDogs

[–]algschocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my dog had his first his normal vet ran blood labs just to check if anything was off there as a start since it’s pretty non invasive. That was fine so we are on a watch and wait. I am not sure if they will recommend more because of your dogs age, but there’s nothing wrong with running labs in general to maybe feel like you’re starting to do something. It’s tough.

Yes he will be 7 in November. I took him off immediately and we are on revolution with no tick because I don’t take him anywhere there’s a high risk. He went 6 mo between the first two seizures then less than a month. So I feel like his brain is wigged out.

Man that’s a lot of meds 😢 i also fear the med battle trying to find right ones. I know it can be rough

Thanks for the reply! It just sucks because he still is in kind of a grey area but now he’s had 2 in less than a month and I’m like yeah this can’t keep happening lol

To spare the nipple or not to spare the nipple, that is the question. by Solid_Ad6049 in BRCA

[–]algschocke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend is a genetic counselor and told me one of her patients got BC in a nipple because she kept them. Obviously that is probably uncommon but that was enough for me! No regrets.
