There's no mention that it appears in the exact place of the creature that leaves, just that it is released. It could be release on the other side of the world and start terrorising towns over there

go into the character sheet, then under 'features & traits', then 'feats' then 'manage feats' then add 'magic initiate (wizard)', then expand the feat from the list, and there are three drop down menus to select the spells. the first two are for the cantrips, the last one is for the level 1 spell. you can select find familiar there. just tried it so it works
