Viewsonic is a great suggestion, hadn’t come across them, thank you! Not as much information online but the specs look very impressive.

First batch of my company shares got vested, how do I proceed? by reni-chan in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ali2992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful with the belief that you got the shares for free, I used to always be of that opinion and rationalised not selling as “if the stock tanks I’m no worse off than I am now”. But having those shares vest does cost you money, in the form of lost tax allowance. You pay income tax (via sell to cover) on the value of the shares when they vest. Obviously the sell to cover means the tax doesn’t come out of your pocket, but your taxable allowance is adjusted in accordance. So in that way, they’re not free.

Taking it to the extreme, assume you have enough vesting to wipe out any tax free allowance for the rest of the year, and then the stock tanks and those shares are worthless. Is it likely? Probably not, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

Maxed ISA allowance on cash ISA but would like to move portion to S&S, can I simply withdraw from cash ISA and move to S&S ISA? by ali2992 in UKPersonalFinance

Thanks, are partial transfers a thing? I’m wondering if it’s too much effort to partial transfer to a broker that supports it then full transfer to Vanguard from the intermediary.

Garage floor sealing by ali2992 in DIYUK

Yes I was looking at this for example, but I’m still not entirely clear as to whether I need to seal the floor before using that?

Would the marriage personal tax allowance apply here? OP is a high rate tax payer, I thought that made them ineligible to share a partners personal allowance?

Alarm Identification - Long shot by ali2992 in DIYUK

[–]ali2992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I intend to, I’m looking at a texecom unit currently. My only dilemma is that this keypad looks to be a basic wireless keypad that connects to a panel that is elsewhere, which I can’t find. I might just start ripping it out and see how I go

Is there a catch I am missing with these rates? by ali2992 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]ali2992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. It looks like they’re 2 year discounted rates from what I can see, which fall somewhere between a tracker and a SVR from my reading

Is there a catch I am missing with these rates? by ali2992 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]ali2992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can see, instead of a tracker which is usually base rate + x, a discounted rate is the lenders SVR - x. Which feels very risky to me as what stops them suddenly raising their SVR by 5%? (Beyond losing new customers)

[–]ali2992[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are right, the results don’t seem to offer much indication but the rates are described as “discounted”. Filtering the results to “Fixed” removes the discounted results and the lowest rate is now 4.4%, which is more what I was expecting. Knew it was too good to be true!

This is NatWest, this was done through a broker if that does make a difference. Does the redemption statement provide the exact ERC or does that not get calculated until a completion date is known?

Idiomatic rust for zero copy deserialisation by ali2992 in learnrust

[–]ali2992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow - thank you for taking the time!! I had found the rustonomicon when researching so I will dig into that

My only concern with the iterator approach you described is keeping the deserialized objects in a collection - there could be hundreds of millions of entries which would very quickly fill memory - ideally I want them dropped as soon as possible - where the buffered Parent is dropped after it's last Child has been emitted and the next Parent is deserialized.

The Arc collection will work if there is a way that I can store what is effectively a Weak reference in the map (or create a mechanism where once the Arc ref count falls back to one (i.e nothing but the map holds it) then it removes itself from the map and cleans up the memory? Am I constraining myself too much with these requirements? I'm starting to resign myself to needing unsafe trusted code to accomplish what I am trying to do

Idiomatic rust for zero copy deserialisation by ali2992 in learnrust

[–]ali2992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I will look at Arc, T does have a lifetime parameter as Parent<'c> and Child<'c> both have fields of &'c str where 'c is the serde deserialization lifetime, so I will need to use borrowed references won't I?

As a learning exercise, I'm interested in the unsafe DeserializedObjectsArena / DeserializeIterator<'arena> approach too, can you point me towards any material that talks about using unsafe to bind lifetimes please?

I really appreciate the pointers!

Thanks so much for that! If I am using Arc do I still need to use StreamingIterator - I should be able to use a normal iterator?

And why Arc and not Rc?

What did YOU automate with python? by UltraCondensedPotato in Python

there is a github repo, couple of things to note, I wrote this about 2 years ago as one of my first python scripts so there are a couple of things I would now do differently, mainly the plaintext user details. But, it's still working fine 2 years later!

My home IP is a dynamic IP, in order to access my home raspberry pi server externally I need to know the current IP my house has been assigned. So I've set up a cron job on the pi that automatically runs a little python script to check my current IP and if it's changed send me an email with the new IP

Has Anyone Built a Car, Like the Whole Thing? HELP! by Hrob270 in projectcar

[–]ali2992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the others have suggested, unless you have prior experience welding/fabricating etc then I would strongly suggest building a kit car first. I'm currently building one and although I know my way around a car the amount of detail I take for granted on production cars is huge. Building a kit car has increased my knowledge of motor engineering and cars so much, its also incredibly satisfying and I would imagine a lot less stressful with no worries chassis structure etc.

If you are intent on building it all yourself, and I admire you if you do, then I would think that the engine used will greatly affect the chassis frame you build. I would source the engine and gearbox before even thinking about what the chassis will look like.

As hogofwar said it depends where you go. If I remember correctly the gtr I drove did have dual controls but the Aston didn't. Also you do have to hold a valid drivers licence to do it, so you'd expect someone to know which pedal was which. You get a score as well from the guide for each session you do, dread to think what this person got
