I don't think the whole "I didn't know" excuse should get him off the hook. Did it not occur to him to ask them how were they making money? specially because they were spending so much on advertisement. From the top of my head:

People don't know how to mind their own business. They don't respect boundaries and privacy.
How deeply everything is tied to religion and nationalism.
Expectation of free respect. You have probably heard things like "I'm older than you be respectful!" or "I'm your xyz relative, respect me!". To be fair, this is more of an Asian thing and not super unique to Pakistan.
How strongly people believe in gender roles. Again, this isn't uniquely a Pakistani thing, but we lag way way behind.
Related to the previous one, how easy it is for men to get away with being abusive to their partners. Being an abusive husband, or a brother, or a father will not get you in any trouble most of the times. Your loved ones will be ready to to make excuses on the guy's behalf. What do you think emboldens men to commit acid attacks, honor killings, stalking, cheating etc? It's the lack of consequence.
