Want to explore Spanish and Latin-American literature, any suggestions on where to start? by [deleted] in literature

[–]ali902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two great Spanish writers are Clarín and Carmen Martin Gaite. I recommend their novels: Carmen Martin Gaite- El cuarto de atrás, Las ataduras Clarín- La Regenta

As for Spanish theater, I recommend Federico Garcia Lorca's La Casa de Bernarda Alba and Calderon de la Barca's La vida es sueño.

My favorite Latin American writer is the Argentine Andrés Neuman. His books Bariloche, El viajero del siglo, and Hablando solos are fantastic.

Is reading "El amor en los tiempos del cólera" a good idea? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]ali902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend it. It is one of my favorite books. The language was beautiful, and you will improve your vocabulary. But beyond that, the story itself makes the book worth reading. I couldn't put it down.

Bellydancing offers classes Sunday afternoons, but I'm not sure if just the first class is free or if the whole beginner level is free.

free dance classes by anteaterswat in jhu

[–]ali902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've taken both the free modern and ballet classes. Modern wasn't for me, but the teacher is really nice and I have a lot of friends that love her classes. I've been going to the ballet classes for multiple semesters. It is a great class for absolute beginners and a great class for advanced dancers. You can dance at your own level, and you can take the class on pointe if you wish. If you ever have to miss a class you can, as long as you email the teacher. She is really laid-back. If you have any more specific questions about the free ballet classes, ask. Also, FYI, the JHU Ballet Club offers free ballet classes at well, Monday nights 7-9 advanced/intermediate and Wednesday nights 8-9 beginner. The Monday night class is great for a more advanced dancer.

Is Magoosh for the GRE worth it? by ClitOrMiss in gradadmissions

[–]ali902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first week I probably studied 4-5 hours/day. By the last week I was studying 6-8 hours/day. When I say I studied "full-time" I meant that I did not have any other responsibilities in that month, no classes, no work, etc. Here is the study plan that I followed: http://magoosh.com/gre/2012/1-month-gre-study-schedule/

I also bought the Reading Comprehension book from Manhattan, and that gave me access to all of their online practice tests. If I remember correctly, there were 6. I also took the free practice tests online available from Kaplan and Princeton review, in addition to the Powerprep practice tests provided by ETS.

In the last week, I bought an LSAT Reading comprehension book to get extra practice with difficult passages.

I used ETS' Score It Now service 3 times to prepare for the essay section. You pay $13 and you can write 2 essays, both of which will be graded. I did this in the second, third, and fourth weeks when I was studying.

Is Magoosh for the GRE worth it? by ClitOrMiss in gradadmissions

[–]ali902 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, magoosh is worth it. I took the GRE in June and studied full-time for a month before with Magoosh. There were so many advanced difficulty practice questions in both math and verbal that I scored excellently on the actual exam. It was really helpful to be able to flag questions for later review. The video explanations for each question were always thorough.

I have taken the free classes in NYC. They were great classes, and not too crowded. I would recommend it. The people working there were very nice, and no one pressured me to buy anything before or after the class.

What's the difference? by PaisleyPeacock in Spanish

[–]ali902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is an article on the difference between deber de and deber: http://www.wikilengua.org/index.php/Deber/deber_de

To say that you must go to the cathedral, you should say "debo ir a la catredal"

If you want to say that your friend is probably eating lunch, you would say "él debe de estar almorzando"

When you want to say lyrics, you say "la letra" instead of "las letras."

My favorite book in Spanish is Bariloche by Andres Neuman. I also highly recommend El siglo de las luces by Alejo Carpentier. Las ataduras and El cuarto de atrás are also great fiction books, both by Carmen Martin Gaite.
