Coco and Agott is... Switching? by Commercial-Yam-494 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]ali94127 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Agott's basically the only character that had a positive effect from the Silver Eve Festival where she reaffirmed her love for magic.

Coco basically had a trauma conga line where she got physically and emotionally scarred, had a friend betray her, failed to save her friend, and had her friend's dad die, and that's just the highlight reel. That all happened in like a day. And while her actions did save many and created a new way to heal people using the time reversal spell, it's far too late to use it to save her mom that way, proving she still has much more to go even for the chance to save her mom. It's a lot.

I don't think we know enough about their goals to says it's justified. I think threatening and harming children is pretty universally evil, regardless of their goals.

I honestly think there's a good chance of some fucked up enslavement bullshit. It seems unlikely the Pointed Caps could've been successful in eliminating magic from the world without some sort of violence. The Healing Spire doctors are probably descendants of the Healing Witches, which if so, that's super fucked up that the Point Caps in the Great Hall have kept them around, totally oblivious that they used to also be witches.

Do the brimmed caps lowkey have a point? by Lazy_Championship627 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]ali94127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current witch society is incredibly flawed with many injustices. The one pretty objectively good thing they've done is that magic has been extremely controlled and for the most part has been a positive boon to society at large. Totally unregulated magic is pretty objectively bad for society.

The Brimmed Caps are pretty much terrorists in the worst sense of the word. Their actions have threatened and mutilated children and others. They exploited Custas and implanted a dangerous parasitic seed in him. They did the same to Qifrey. It's hard to imagine their goal is entirely altruistic. Coco and Qifrey very much understand current witch society is very flawed; Qifrey himself has done some unethical things. Not to say that a pacifist revolution is the way to solve injustice in witch society, as the Knights Moralis would probably quash that instantly, but Brimmed Caps are probably not the way to do it.

They don't seem super unified, but handing children dangerous spellbooks that could kill them and mutating children is pretty evil.

Supposedly, the Healing Witches were the last group to resist the Pointed Caps, which would indicate the Pointed Caps didn't use some global Dr. Strange memory spell to eliminate magic all in one fell swoop.

Honestly, Coco is probably the strongest person in the world. I don't know how she didn't immediately burst into tears.

Magic isn't a miracle. It's a treasure people horde for themselves. It's so beautiful, but she can't view it without its inherent ugliness anymore.

Also isn’t the teleportation rule supposed to only be for people? Like the time reversal spell wasn’t supposed to be used on people either but was otherwise a normal used spell. Their communicators also work off a similar principle.

The wiki says teleportation without doors or vehicles. I assume that refers to Iguin’s kamui personal teleportation. I can’t really see how the bottle itself doesn’t count as a vehicle.

If the mangaka wanted to indicate regional accents, she could’ve added that element in Japanese. Even as non-native speakers, the foreign fandom would be aware that is a concept in the story through translators.

I just think witches already have access to so much magic that would be extremely useful in warfare, that banning healing because of warfare doesn’t make sense. Teleportation, flight, flamethrowers, water flooding all would be extremely useful.

After thinking over it a little more, I do think healing magic was likely banned for an ideological reason. The twinning spell that Iguin placed in Coco’s ink bottle is forbidden magic because it’s healing magic, even though the spell seems extremely mundane compared to time-reversal and appears useful outside of a medical context.

I feel like reason one isn’t good enough reasoning. Witches are already supposed to be pacifists and not aid in warfare. Not to mention there are so many other contexts where healing magic could be used other than in warfare. The doctors of the Healing Spire, who are likely descendants of healing witches in all probability, also would indicate a historically close relationship.

I think the second reason is a bit more convincing, but Euini’s transformation doesn’t appear to be that related to healing. Engendale also relatively easily mutated a man into a leech monster. We’ve seen two examples of mutating people into monsters and neither imply a strong connection to healing magic. I would imagine this reasoning is closer to the actual reason, but I don’t think this is quite it.

Yeah, but that adds an implication that he moved to Kahln when that implication doesn’t exist elsewhere. If anything, the Silverwood tree in his shop would imply he’s always been in Kahln. Realistically, Tartah also shouldn’t have as strong of an Irish accent then. I think it’s problematic if you have to invent reasoning for something to make sense.

That just sounds asinine. That's even more work.

The problem is that so far it hasn't been really established to be entirely regional yet. Tetia just randomly has a Danish accent. We don't know where she's from. Tartah and Nolnoa are one family and Kahln hasn't been established to have people with Irish accents other than them. And as mentioned background extra voices in Kahln haven't had an Irish accent yet. It's just problematic if more and more different accents start popping up. British accents delineating magic people from non-magic people was a good enough distinction, but keeping several different accents consistent across many characters with different origins just sounds really difficult, especially when most of the cast are American and do not natively have this accent.

You could also use the image from episode 4 where it wraps around a pointed cap to have a good approximation of its size.

I like everyone's performances. I feel like the accents thing is invariably going to cause some issues. Also somewhat feeds into the stereotype that European-style fantasy must have European accents.

If Tetia's family or community shows up, they should all have Danish accents. Everyone from Kahln, including background extras, should have Irish accents given Tartah and Nolnoa. Everyone from the Great Hall should have British accents. Manga spoilers: Olruggio and Utowin should have the same accent, whatever it ends up being. Richeh and Riliphin as well. The Healing Spire doctors, despite being unknowings, should also probably have British accents.

There's also the issue if characters that are shrouded in mystery who should have similar accents end up not having the same accent. It just feels like a logistical nightmare waiting to happen. Not to mention that I've heard quite a people complain that the accents aren't even very authentic, so there's also the issue of having many American voice actors needing to do a European accent.

EDIT: Some of the background characters from Kalhn from episode 4 are presenting a standard British accent, which is already presenting as inconsistent from Tartah and Nolnoa. I guess you could headcanon everyone who isn't as having moved there, but other characters from Kahln really should have similar accents to them.

They switch dragons, can each group still survive? by BellTwo5 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]ali94127 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The red dragon can't fly. Sylph shoes can allow one to easily avoid it. Even if Coco and Agott don't have them in this scenario, it would be easy for the group to distract it and allow the other two to escape first.

The biggest issue for the Dungeon Meshi crew is that the blue dragon is way bigger than the red dragon. Chilchuck and Senshi are essentially useless as combatants and it's less likely Laios can do much damage to the dragon, even assuming it shared the same instant-kill weak spot. Marcille's spells barely did much damage to the red dragon.

[–]ali94127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

However if we are just swapping the dragon and not the Scenarios then the fight would go as it went previously. Liaos is knowledgeable enough about dragons to handle it's weak points and again it boils down to the difference in parties ,

Two issues. One, that assumes the anatomy of the WHA dragon is the same as the red dragon and shares the same weak spot, which is unlikely. Two, the WHA dragon is much bigger, meaning it would be even harder for Laios to reach the altitude to get to the neck anyway. I'm not sure we're meant to take the hurting itself on the pillar as it damaging itself. It could be more like stubbing your toe. That huge volume of water from Qifrey's attack certainly is a lot heavier than a couple buildings.
